Just a few days ago, November 9th 2016 to be exact, Donald Trump beat Hillary Clinton. Many
people wonder "How?", I'm going to break it down with facts.
Hillary Clinton had a larger popular vote lead than Al Gore when he ran against former United
States president George Bush, but the Electoral College picks presidents. As voting continued to be
counted, Hillary Clinton had also surpassed Al Gore's popular vote margin. Hillary Clinton's

What would you think if your president was elected by popular vote but he or she only represented a
special interest group such as pro–choice or pro–life? This could easily happen under a popular vote
with many candidates where a candidate would win with a plurality of votes. Our founding fathers
created a system to prevent this from happening and represent the interest of all people. The
electoral college was established by Article II of the US Constitution as the voting method to select
the President and Vice President of the United States. The electoral college is a voting system in
which residents of a state vote for a representative to vote for the president. "The Founding Fathers
created the Electoral College as a compromise between electing the president via a vote in Congress

The electoral college is determined by adding the number of senators, which is always two, plus the
number of representatives, which are apportioned based on each state's population compared to the
entire US population with each state having at least one representative. The total number of
representatives is 437 which was established by law in 1911. The number of electoral votes ranges
from 3 for seven small states and Washington, DC to 54 electoral votes for California which is the

2013). The ideas suggested varied and ranged from selection by members of congress chosen by

Reforming the United States Presidential Electoral Process The framers of the constitution designed
the United States electoral process to give a voice to the voiceless. They sought to ensure that the
American people would play a direct role in the selection of their leaders rather than being forced to
endure the policies of a 'tyrannical' government that neglects the rights of its citizens, such as the
English monarchy prior to the revolution. However, this system has degraded over the years as
presidential candidates' focus has been pulled away from the interests and issues of constituent
voters in favor of exorbitant fundraising and catering to swing states in order to gain political

responsibilities of eligible Unite States citizens. Every eligible citizen has the right to vote but to

votes. When the votes are counted on January 6th, the Presidential candidate that gets more than

A major issue is that the distribution of electoral votes is not equal per state. Small states are given at
least 3 electoral votes to make sure they are counted in the election. However, this means that in
bigger states, each individual vote counts less overall than smaller states. For example each vote in
Wyoming counts close to four times as much as each individual vote in Texas (Lewis). Also, using
