2. Extreme close up
Extreme close up is used to empathise a shot, it is used to focus on the character for
that moment in that particular scene. It adds effect as you feel like you are very close to
the character and it is as if you can feel the same tension and emotions with the
character therefore builds tension and possibly suspense. As you can see in the
screenshot, the extreme close up shows the characters emotions and we can tell just
from looking that she is distressed as she has tears and is screw facing.
3. Close up
A close up is used to show where the subject fills the frame, and it also shows the
emotion very clearly. For example, as you are very close to the character face you will
be able to tell what emotions they are having just from the clear facial expression and
it will be realistic. As we can see in the screenshot, the character is thinking about
something very deeply and whatever it is is making her feel very nervous.
4. Medium shot
A medium shot is used when the subject is cut off at the waist, you can still see their
costumes and surroundings and you will still be able to see their emotions. This is so
you can see exactly everything that is going on around them and so you can
understand their facial expression. We can see in this screenshot that there is some
conflict as one character is dressed formally and is looking smug whereas the other
character looks rather shocked and looks like they have been interrupted in something.
5. Pan
Pan is used to give audience a clear view of the location/setting, the speed of this pan is
slow, this is to create tension and suspension. In a horror genre, the scene will a dark
appearance. From this we can see where the next scene is going to be based as it is
taken slowly and is being zoomed into.
6. High Angle
High angle shot enhances the emotions on the characters faces. We can see from this
shot that the girl is very worried about something.This shot makes her look very
vulnerable.
7. Tilt
The shot tilt is used as a way of tracking the characters. It shows the mise en scene and
shows the costume and location and give the audience a brief idea of what period it is
set in, this will also be a dark setting. In the shot we can the characters going
somewhere as the woman is holding the young girl’s hand and the young girl has a
suitcase.
8. Diegetic
A diegetic sound is the sound that is being played/recorded at the time of the filming
of the scene. This is when the characters are supposed to the sound. I this scene the
character is drilling something and him and another character can hear this noise.
9. Non diegetic
Non diegetic sound is when is the opposite of diegetic sound and is when the
characters can not hear any sound. In this scene, there is suspense music playing as the
character gets more and more frightened however the character cannot hear this
sound.
