penguin island?
penguin Island ferries are using cargo nets instead of life-rings to
haul in distressed children and adults.
Some have even drowned making the crossing.
Hordes of people make the 800m waist-deep sandbar walk to the
popular eco-tourism island in the morning calm. But problems arise
when they try late-afternoon
returns, as incoming tides and strong sea breezes make conditions
treacherous.
Island manager, the Department of Environment and Conservation,
and tour operator Rockingham Wild Adventures, estimate about 20
rescues so far this season.
But they acknowledge a bigger number of waders would have been
saved by private boats after the last ferry at 4pm had departed for
the coast in Rockingham.
