Comfort devices are articles which
would add to the patient when
used, by relieving discomfort and
helping to maintain correct
posture.
 To provide maximum comfort and relaxati
on.
 To aid in normal body function.
 To prevent contractures and neuromuscular
deformities and complications.
 To conserve maximum possible energy by
preventing unnecessary strain.
 To relive pressure on parts of body.
 To prevent falls and accidents.
 To immobilize a body part.
USES
 Placed under head, back, between
knees or at the foot of the bed to
prevent foot drop and reduces strain on
muscles & joints.
 Are used to give comfort, support and
to position a patient properly.
 Relieves pain on abdominal muscles
and tendons the knees.
PURPOSES
To relieve dyspnoea
To promote drainage from abdominal
cavity
To provide a comfortable change of
position.
CLINICAL IMPLICATION:
It is used to splint incision area in
abdominal and thoracic surgeries, to reduce
postoperative pain during activity or
coughing and deep breathing.
Pillows placed directly under popliteal fossa
may obliterate blood supply in vessels
passing through this area.
The comfort, of the patient depends on the
skillful arrangement of pillows according to
the needs of the patient preventing strain
and fatigue.
A flat panel or board made of plastic or
wood and are L shaped, or we can used
hard pillows or sand bags which is
placed perpendicular to the mattress and
parallel to and touching the plantar
surfaces of the patient’s feet. Are rigid,
vertical structures.
 Help to maintain the ankles in their normal
functional position in order to prevent foot
drop and also prevent the patient from sliding
down.
 Should be padded for support.
 Should be adjusted to the client's height so that
the soles rest firmly against it and the ankles
are maintained at 90.
 It is placed at the foot of the bed.
The patient’s feet should prevent be
placed firmly against the board.
Can be made of thick cotton bath
blanket/sheet is folded lengthwise to
width extending from greater trochanter
of femur to lower border of popliteal
space.
USES
To prevent external rotation of legs when
the patient s in supine position.
CLINICAL IMPLICATION
Blanket is placed under the buttocks &
rolled away from the patient until thigh is
in neutral position or in inward rotation.
These are canvas, heavy, cylindrical or
rectangular sand-filled bags. Made with
cloth, rubber or plastic bags
filled with sand and are 1,5 and 10 lbs in
weight.
USES:
 Are used for supporting or immobilizing a limb.
 They should be covered with towel and placed one
on either side of a limb (or part to be
immobilized).
 Used for application of pressure in case of
bleeding.
CLINICAL IMPLICATION:
 Prevent foot drop and external rotation of thighs.
These are made of cloth that is rolled into
a cylinder about 45 inches long and 2-
3 inches in diameter and stuffed firmly.
USES
These are used to keep the fingers form being
held in a tight fist leading to flexion contract
ure in patients who are unable to move the han
ds due to paralysis, injury or disease.
Maintain fingers in slightly flexed position
CLINICAL IMPLICATION
Roll is placed against palmar surface of hand,
thumb and fingers in a functional position.
Individually molded for the patient to
maintain proper alignment of the thumb
in slight adduction & wrist in slight
dorsiflexion
USES
Use to maintain immobility of the fingers
and maintains function position.
CLINICAL IMPLICATION
The nurse should ensure that pressure of
the splints are not obliterating
circulation.

attached to over- bad frame.
USES:
Used enable patient to raise the trunk off the
bed
Used to enable patient to surface or to move up
in bed to wheel chair.
Used to help the patient in performing exercises
that strengthen upper arms.
CLINICAL IMPLICATION:
 Ideal for patient in traction and plaster cast for
assisting with changing position in bad and in
carrying out nursing procedures.
Plywood boards placed under the entire
mattress.
USES
Used for increasing back support and
vertebral alignment with a soft mattress.
Used in patients with spinal problems.
Used in giving CPR in the proper manner.
It placed under the mattress to provide
support.
These are mostly semicircular in shape,
made of wood or metal. Cradle is often a
semicircular frame of metal May be
made of wood or bamboo It may be
made into a rectangular shape. Also
called Anderson frame.
 These are used to prevent the weight of top bedclo
thes on patient’s feet and toes.
 Place it over the bottom bedclothes and the top be
dclothes are then brought over the cradle.
 These are used for patients affected by burns.
 Restraintsare devices used to prevent agitated pati
ents, persons who get out of bed at night in their sl
eep and small children, from falling out of bed
 Is a frame used to hold the bed linen from
touching the patient.
 Used to allow air to circulate around lower limbs.
Cradles with electric bulbs provide
desired warmth to burns patients.
Special types of mattress filled with
water or air which moves from one part
of the mattress to the other thus reducing
pressure to the same area.
USES
Used the prevent pressure ulcers in
patients at risk.
CLINICAL IMPLICATION
All nursing intervention should be
carried out to prevent pressure ulcer
development even if such mattresses are
used.
Made up of wood or metal, used to raise
the head or foot end of the bed.
USES
Usually for patients who are propped up in a sitting
position for change of position Bed table placed in
front with a pillow on it, patient can lean forward &
take rest
Table without pillow is used for writing & meals
Used for patient with cardiac conditions & asthma
Makes it possible to use accessory muscles of
respiration Position should be changed to relieve
fatigue & prevent embolism, shock arresting
hemorrhage and retaining fluids in retention enema.
CLINICAL IMPLICATION:
Do not raise foot in case of increased intracranial
pressure.
A mechanical device used as a suitable
support and rest for the back of the
patient in Fowler’s position.
USES
Used for elevating and supporting the
head and back of the patient.
Used to relieve dyspnea as in asthmatic
patient by providing Fowler’s position.
Used in positioning cardiac patient to
reduce workload on heart.
It is a small circles of cotton rolled with
gauze or bandage with hole in the
middle.
USES
Used to relieve pressure from small areas
such as the elbows and hells.

  • 2. Comfort devices are articles which would add to the patient when used, by relieving discomfort and helping to maintain correct posture.
  • 3.  To provide maximum comfort and relaxati on.  To aid in normal body function.  To prevent contractures and neuromuscular deformities and complications.  To conserve maximum possible energy by preventing unnecessary strain.  To relive pressure on parts of body.  To prevent falls and accidents.  To immobilize a body part.

  • 5. USES  Placed under head, back, between knees or at the foot of the bed to prevent foot drop and reduces strain on muscles & joints.  Are used to give comfort, support and to position a patient properly.  Relieves pain on abdominal muscles and tendons the knees.
  • 6. PURPOSES To relieve dyspnoea To promote drainage from abdominal cavity To provide a comfortable change of position.
  • 7. CLINICAL IMPLICATION: It is used to splint incision area in abdominal and thoracic surgeries, to reduce postoperative pain during activity or coughing and deep breathing. Pillows placed directly under popliteal fossa may obliterate blood supply in vessels passing through this area. The comfort, of the patient depends on the skillful arrangement of pillows according to the needs of the patient preventing strain and fatigue.
  • 8. A flat panel or board made of plastic or wood and are L shaped, or we can used hard pillows or sand bags which is placed perpendicular to the mattress and parallel to and touching the plantar surfaces of the patient’s feet. Are rigid, vertical structures.
  • 9.  Help to maintain the ankles in their normal functional position in order to prevent foot drop and also prevent the patient from sliding down.  Should be padded for support.  Should be adjusted to the client's height so that the soles rest firmly against it and the ankles are maintained at 90.  It is placed at the foot of the bed.

  • 11. Can be made of thick cotton bath blanket/sheet is folded lengthwise to width extending from greater trochanter of femur to lower border of popliteal space.
  • 12. USES To prevent external rotation of legs when the patient s in supine position. CLINICAL IMPLICATION Blanket is placed under the buttocks & rolled away from the patient until thigh is in neutral position or in inward rotation.
  • 13. These are canvas, heavy, cylindrical or rectangular sand-filled bags. Made with cloth, rubber or plastic bags filled with sand and are 1,5 and 10 lbs in weight.
  • 14. USES:  Are used for supporting or immobilizing a limb.  They should be covered with towel and placed one on either side of a limb (or part to be immobilized).  Used for application of pressure in case of bleeding. CLINICAL IMPLICATION:  Prevent foot drop and external rotation of thighs.
  • 15. These are made of cloth that is rolled into a cylinder about 45 inches long and 2- 3 inches in diameter and stuffed firmly.

USES These are used to keep the fingers form being held in a tight fist leading to flexion contract ure in patients who are unable to move the han ds due to paralysis, injury or disease. Maintain fingers in slightly flexed position CLINICAL IMPLICATION Roll is placed against palmar surface of hand, thumb and fingers in a functional position.

  • 18. USES Use to maintain immobility of the fingers and maintains function position. CLINICAL IMPLICATION The nurse should ensure that pressure of the splints are not obliterating circulation.

  • 20. USES: Used enable patient to raise the trunk off the bed Used to enable patient to surface or to move up in bed to wheel chair. Used to help the patient in performing exercises that strengthen upper arms. CLINICAL IMPLICATION:  Ideal for patient in traction and plaster cast for assisting with changing position in bad and in carrying out nursing procedures.

  • 26. Special types of mattress filled with water or air which moves from one part of the mattress to the other thus reducing pressure to the same area.
  • 27. USES Used the prevent pressure ulcers in patients at risk. CLINICAL IMPLICATION All nursing intervention should be carried out to prevent pressure ulcer development even if such mattresses are used.

USES Usually for patients who are propped up in a sitting position for change of position Bed table placed in front with a pillow on it, patient can lean forward & take rest Table without pillow is used for writing & meals Used for patient with cardiac conditions & asthma Makes it possible to use accessory muscles of respiration Position should be changed to relieve fatigue & prevent embolism, shock arresting hemorrhage and retaining fluids in retention enema. CLINICAL IMPLICATION: Do not raise foot in case of increased intracranial pressure.
  • 30. A mechanical device used as a suitable support and rest for the back of the patient in Fowler’s position.
  • 31. USES Used for elevating and supporting the head and back of the patient. Used to relieve dyspnea as in asthmatic patient by providing Fowler’s position. Used in positioning cardiac patient to reduce workload on heart.

  • 33. USES Used to relieve pressure from small areas such as the elbows and hells.
