2. • The Captain and the soldiers are discussing cutting down the rations, Mercedes walks in and the camera pans up to her. While the Captain is
discussing, the camera is on Mercedes as a medium close up and it shows Mercedes looking down at the table, like she is looking at the
map.
• Next shot shows an extreme close up of the Captains hand and touching small markers, this shows how obsessive he is and how he
constantly wants things to be perfect. The fact he is always ways gloves shows that he isn’t as in touch as everyone else, and that he isn’t as
close as other people.
• Mercedes is still looking down, her face curious and shows her intent look as she watches. The Captains hand hits her shoulder and she
jumps, as he says “Mercedes,” she acts almost as if she's caught doing something she shouldn’t be. But the Captain doesn’t suspect
anything, she is just sent to fetch the Doctor. This is ironic as the Doctor is also helping the rebels with Mercedes.
• Room with Carmen, Ofelia and the Doctor is lit similarly to the shot inside the mothers womb. The colours have a uterine warmth to them
and they seem comforting.
3. • Ofelia picks up the bottle of medicine for her mother, this is foreshadowing the future of how she will drug
the Captain with it later. The colours are still uterine and comforting. Ofelia then takes her hand out the
frame but the medicine is still in the shot.
• Then a close up of the parcel being passed between the Doctor and Carmen, and them speaking in a hushed
tone. She then turns to watch the Doctor leave, both of them being portrayed in warm colours.
• Medium shot of Mercedes holding the medicine parcel, the music gets lower and the camera cuts to see
Ofelia.
4. • Ofelia is seen wide eyed and open mouthed, as if she is shocked by what she is seeing. The camera then cuts to Mercedes, the music
holding the same note, both Mercedes and Ofelia having similar reactions.
• Ofelia then enters her mothers room, the room is blue and dark, almost as if the cold real world is intruding on Ophelia's fairy tale happy
world. She then gets in bed with her mother.
5. • On the headboard behind them, there is a Fawns head carved into it. As if the fawn is watching over them. The room is dark and cold, only
warmth coming from the fire.
• Surround sound of the creaking house etc which makes the audience feel as though they are really in the movie, to give the house some
life. “houses are old her, they creak, as if they were speaking.” Creates that potentiality of fantasy.
• Camera tracks into to Carmen and Ofelia, Carmen talks about a surprise for Ofelia, “a book?” Ofelia asks, “no, better,” this shows how
Carmen puts down Ofelias love for books and just doesn’t understand it.
• Ofelia looks into the opposite direction of her mother, and asks “why did you have to get married?” in which her mother gives her truthful
answer, that she was alone. This is when Ofelia turns to he mother and tells her that she isn’t alone. “When you’re older you’ll understand,”
is what her mother says, this is ironic as she won’t get old as she dies.
6. • The colours of this shot, are warm and uterine, with the
sound of the baby's heart beat as well as Ofelia telling the
story. The round womb reflects flexibility, unlike the real
world.
• Ofelia tells her brother a fairy tale story, which is ironic as
her mother tells her to stop reading fairy tales but
requests for her to tell her brother one. A horizontal wipe
into a womb shot.
7. • Cut to blue rose, covered in thorns.
Then a low shot which shows how
powerful the rose is. “But no one dared
go near it,” shows how people are
obedient, like the fascists, but Ofelia
isn’t obedient like that.
• The rose is seen as threatening but also
powerful. But then you see the insect
within the thorns, which shows how it is
similar to Ofelia and doesn’t listen to the
rules.
• The insect then flies away from the fantasy world
and straight into the real world, which shows how
they are closer than you think and goes straight to
Ofelias room.
8. • Dissolve into Vidal sat at his desk, the room is now
dark and cold. In the background you can see lots
of straight lines and machinery at the back, which
is ironic because he is now also trying to fix his
watch. This represents how Vidal is mechanical,
the watch represents Vidal's Father and shows
how he is always surrounded by his father and
machinery, he lacks humanity. Despite the fact
Ofelia is describing the rose, it also links to Vidal.
• Low shot which shows how he is powerful and
higher than other people.
• The cogs also represent the medieval torture
devices, which links to how Vidal tortures people
too.
• Close up of Vidal fiddling with his watch, with his
gloves on again, even though the watch
represents his father he still wont take his gloves
off and get close and personal with it.
• The mise-en-scene is dark and cold, which is
similar to Vidal.
9. • This close up also shows how meticulous
and obsessive Vidal is, how he is a
sociopath focused on only the small details
of his life – e.g the watch.
• Vidal does not look up from his watch even
when the doctor enters, speaking about
Carmen, but he is still interested in his
watch despite talking about Carmen and
her illness.
• Vidals p.o.v of the watch face closing shut, the
crack on the face constantly reminds him of his
father and his death, this also foreshadows his
own broken face later.
10. • Vidal only looks up from his watch to ask about his
son, rather than his wife.
• The doctor talks about how Carmen should not
have travelled, Vidal is surrounded by the cogs
again as he looks up, looking like a threat, Vidal
acts arrogantly as he blows the cigarette some.
• Over the shoulder shot of the doctor, looking
down on him which shows how vulnerable he
is. He is trapped between Vidal and a different
soldier.
Scene where Vidal hates the young man, the sound used makes the violence seem worse. Before he hits him, there is no non-diegetic music up until the
first hit, which makes it seem as more of a shock when the sound kicks in. Sound is used to give even more impact, a series of small crescendos which
increase the brutality. Crescendo is also used to build up to the shooting. Mid shot of two soldiers looking at each other once Vidal has walked off, this
suggests they think he went too far this time.
