How Do I Love Thee and A Dream
Since the beginning of language, poetry has a role in the recollection of memories, emotions, and creativity. From the oldest surviving poem: Tale of
the ship wrecked salor, by Hiratic, to todays poems; poetry has been a staple in the literary world. It is vital language because it is a literary vehicle that
takes us on a ride of emotions. Poetry according to William Wordsworth should be, "The spontaneous overflow of powerful feelings." Poems such as A
Dream, by Edgar Allan Poe, and How do I love thee, by Elizabeth Barrett Browning, are perfect examples of good poetry, they have very different
views of the same subject, which give a powerful effect on the reader. The poem, How do I love thee, by Elizabeth Barrett Browning, is about ... Show

Poe's intention was to show how a dream may be the only thing you have, but it is only a lie. Another example is "Ah! what is not a dream by
day,To him whose eyes are cast... Hath cheered me as a lovely beam". He is confused about having such a dream when his life is bad. He writes the
poem in his point of view, he does this through the use of the language. This poem talks about the motivation, anxiety, and hope you get when
dreaming, but wake up knowing it was never true. The three verses "That holy dream– that holy dream, While all the world were chiding, Hath cheered
me as a lovely beam" indirectly shows the importance of a dream in man, how it can give a person freedom from what he is suffering. On the other
hand, "What could there be more purely bright, In Truth's day–star?" also indicates that every man must be capable of facing the reality and keep on
going such as the dream is only a truth that will never be true. Never be crushed by your dreams is the main purpose of the poem. The title "A
Dream" can give a sarcastic tone indirectly showing the very little importance a dream is. But can give an opposite tone to the poem such as a
glimpse of hope. Depending on the reader, the poem can give diverse emotions. Edgar Allan Poe uses many literary devices in his poem "A Dream",
and uses them to increase the quality of his poem and make it be more lively. Poe applies the literary device of imagery by using the terms day and
night, since light and dark bring a

I Tend My Flowers For Thee Rhetorical Devices
Emily Dickinson's "I tend my flowers for thee–" (Fr 367) is traditionally read as an expression of longing and desire. Her use of vivid descriptions of
nature conjure images of soft petals juxtaposed against those thorny cacti and the notion of dreams interrupted by violent passion. However, a feminist
reading of the poem reveals that it is Emily Dickinson's critical commentary on the patriarchal ideology that a woman's sense of personal fulfillment is
contingent upon the presence of a romantic partner. The poem is iambic and each stanza follows the pattern: tetrameter/ dimeter/ trimester/ trimester.
Its rhyme scheme reads: AABB/ CCDE/ FGHIJJK/ LMNMM/ OOAOOPA. Dickinson wrote "I tend my flowers for thee– " in 1862. In her early thirties,

article "What Do Collections Tell Us?–Teaching Dickinson's Poems, the Herbarium, and Contemporary and Historical Material Practices", Zach
Marshall asserts that, in order to increase critical productivity, students should read Dickinson's poems in tandem with excerpts from Belknap Press's

and Dickinson's poems "within the often abstracted discipline of literary studies". This pedagogical technique "also offers critical benefits, such as
pushing students to think critically about the curatorial practices that influence the texts they work with, focusing attention on Dickinson's material
writing practices, providing a context for understanding more unusual poems, and even forging a way for students to see connections between poetic
practices and ecological practices" (Marshall 58–59). This method of analyzing Dickinson's poems in which she utilizes plant imagery can provide

How Do I Love Thee? Let me Count the Ways by Elizabeth...
A flame of passion is contained within the heart, yet is love contained in a mere flame of passion? This timeless saying embodies the ultimate
declaration of love written by Elizabeth Barrett Browning. "How Do I Love Thee? Let me Count the Ways" is a poem bathed in rhyme and inundated
in sentimental avowals. This sonnet shows the perpetual love that Browning shares with her husband and how that love can never be destroyed by any
power of human or spiritual nature (Elizabeth Barrett Browning's: Sonnet 45). Based on answering one, seemingly simple yet complex, question, "how
do I love thee?" (Browning Line 1) is what this poem is based on. Using literary tools and techniques, Browning unleashes the powerful emotions that

"I love thee to the level of everyday's/Most quite need, by sun and candlelight" (Browning Line 5–6) Browning continues using anaphora with the
continually repeated "thee" (Browning Line 5) and "the" (Browning Line 5). Explaining how her love is persistent throughout every second of the
day, even in the simplest of needs, synecdoche is used in "sun" (Browning Line 6) for day and "candle–light" (Browning Line 6) for night.
Browning likens her deep feelings to religious, spiritual, emotional and even political aspiration and goes on to employ repetition, the metaphor of
Christian religious faith and a musical metrical and rhyme scheme to develop and convey her ideas beautifully (Swanhorst). She addresses her
sweetheart with simplicity, charm and a refreshing innocence: "How do I love thee? Let me count the ways. /I love thee to the depth and breadth and
height/my soul can reach" (Browning Lines 1–3) is deceptively simple and will be repeated many times in different ways. In order to express her wild
and free feelings in a very restricted sonnet form, Browning uses repetition often to help her fit in with the stresses and unstresses of the sonnet pattern.
The iambic meter dictates strict adherence. Moving on, the word "freely" (Browning Line 7) not only evokes ideas of freedom in

All Thee Light We Cannot See: Character Analysis
Humans since the beginning of their existence on Earth have inherently been inclined to be good as opposed to being evil. This idea can be be
loosely argued as devastation by humans swept the land in the past events leading up to the present, but also vice versa there has been kindhearted
movements by civilizations of people that helped humanity. Created in the image and likeness of God, there has been some guiding lights and
principles that have led humanity to its current stage in time. Every person has the tools inside of them to choose, in a given scenario, what is the right
thing to do and what is not. Throughout this essay, the best and worst of human character will be discussed in the book All thee Light We Cannot See.
In order to provide a good contrast between the good and evil acts its is only fair to start with the acts that devastated the lives of millions. During the

Shall I Compare Thee To A Summer's Day By Anne Bradstreet...
Love is such a strong word that we sometimes use it to the best of our ability. While reading I was very intrigued by two poems that I feel was
wrote more so on the love side and trying to show or I would say express themselves through the poem. The poems Shall I compare thee to a summer's
day? by William Shakespeare and To My Dear and Loving Husband by Anne Bradstreet are two poems I feel is trying to expresslove, but in two totally
different ways. The poems are bringing meaning to the word love and showing that it doesn't have to be used only to show a connection between two
different people, but it can be used in other ways as well.
In the poem Shall I compare thee to a summer's day? By William Shakespeare, the author is showing his love through nature. He is actually
comparing every little thing he feels is right about his companion to something in nature. He says, " Thou art more lovely and more temperate."
From this the author is saying one's love is more lovable and is hotter than summer. He then goes on to say, "Rough winds do shake the darling buds
of May." He is saying that before summer comes its spring time and the windy weather is knocking all of the buds off the flowers and making them
new, so he is she is more better now that they have gone through a rough time before. After that he says, "And summer's lease hath all too short a date."
He means by this that the summer time goes by very fast, so they have to savor every moment together during this time while

Nixon was basically stating that he was a proven enemy of communists and that the democrats assisted them. Finally, Nixon supports Eisenhower by
showing that he is qualified to clean up corruption and deal with communists. If one looks closely at Nixon's speech it has a very easy, logical
pattern to follow, and allowed him to achieve every goal that he set for himself. One of his main intentions of his speech was to attack the democrats,
but at the same time make republicans, including himself, look good. After Nixon built up his own credibility, he began to bash the democrats. He
implied that Stevenson and Sparkman had something to hide, unless they do as "I" did and make their finances pubic. Nixon encourages his audience
to believe a lot of things that may or may not have been true. One, that he has done nothing morally wrong with using the $18,000 fund because he
made his finances public. Two, he is an honest man, and he deserves to be retained as Vice Presidential candidate. Three, rich men such as "Governor
Stevenson who inherited a fortune from his father" should not deserve to be president. But, a "modest man" such as himself or Eisenhower, a common
man that "God must have loved," should have that chance at office. In general Nixon said that Eisenhower and he, the republican candidates, are
qualified to lead the country and democrats are not. Therefore, he only left the American public with the option of electing the

Love in "To His Coy Mistress", "Shall I Compare Thee," "Let Me Not," and "The Flea"
The four poems I am going to be comparing are, "To His Coy Mistress,"
"Shall I Compare Thee," "Let Me Not," and "The Flea." All four of these poems are based on the subject matter of love. The four poems have a lot in
common but each poem touches a different aspect of love.
Two of the poems, "Shall I Compare Thee", and "Let Me Not", are sonnets and both were written by Shakespeare. "To His Coy Mistress" is written by
Andrew Marvell and "The Flea" was written by John Donne.
All four of the poems have three parts to them each posing a different argument. I will be analysing and comparing the four poems in the purpose of the

Shakespeare is praising his mistress when he says she is 'better than the best' because summer is the best time of the year and Shakespeare is
saying she is better than summer. "Thou art more lovely and more temperate" shows that he is saying she is perfect and constantly exquisite". The
word "darling" gives the poem an affectionate tone. Shakespeare is also writing to show off his writing skills, this is shown in the last line when
he says, "So long lives this and this gives live to thee", because he says his writing will live on forever. It is also written to give his loved one a
reminder of mortality. "Nor shall death brag" is the reminder of death and it is personified because it implies death can't take her.
The purposes of 'Let Me Not' were to flatter Shakespeare's loved one, remind his beloved of mortality, define love and to show how love is threatened
by other things. Romantic flattery is shown when
Shakespeare says, "rosie lips and cheeks", it is also describing his beloved. The reminder of death is shown when the poem says, "edge of doome"; this
is even more effective than just death because it is describing love until the end of the world. The "edge of doome" also defines love and pontificates
it to the end of time. 'Let Me Not' is an imperative because it is a strong

Comparative Analysis of Shall I compare thee to a...
Comparative Analysis of "Shall I compare thee to a summer's day?" by William Shakespeare and The Flea by John Donne
'Shall I compare thee' by Shakespeare focuses on romantic love, whereas Donne's poem, 'The Flea' is all about seduction and sexual love.
The situations in the two poems are very different. In 'Shall I compare thee', the poet is shown as a lover who is addressing his lady. His tone is
gentle and romantic. He starts with a rhetorical question to which he must answer and therefore he does not put demand upon the lady. The poem
gives the impression that it is set perhaps in his room, where he is composing his poem. One thing is for sure and that is that the woman he is
addressing is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Both poets use a three part argument although Shakespeare's is in the form of a sonnet whilst Donne's is a three stanza poem. Shakespeare's poem is a
sonnet and consists of three quatrains and a rhyming couplet. The first two quatrains start with the rhetorical question 'Shall I compare thee…'
and the rest of this section answers this question. However, this question has an obvious answer of 'no' because the next line says,
"Thou art more temperate and beautiful".
The poet thinks she is perfect, unlike a summer's day. He says that the summer's day is "sometime to hot" and has "rough windes", but she is "more
lovely". He uses personification in the line,
"And often is his gold complexion dim'd".
He uses this technique to show that the sun has a face, which glows, but not always and therefore shows that summer is not perfect, but she is. He
describes her as being "temperate" which means that she is moderate compared to the temperamental weather of an English summer. This is one of the
things he says to compliment her.
The third quatrane starts with the word "but", which signals a change to a different thought. In this quatrane, Shakespeare uses exaggerated claims to
show how perfect she is. He says,
"Thy eternal Sommer shall not fade, nor lose possession of that faire thou ow'st".
Here, he is explaining how much better than a summer's

Shall I compare thee to a summer’s day
Introduction The Sonnet 18 "Shall I compare thee to a summer's day " is around the most admired and prominent of the 154 poems of William
Shakespeare . Most researchers concur that the true recipient of the lyric, the mate of pleasant toward oneself, whom the artist is composing, is a man,
however the sonnet is generally used to portray a lady. In the piece, the pleasant toward oneself contrasts his adoration with a June through August, and
contends that his affection is superior to summer (Kennedy & Gioia). He additionally states that your beau will live everlastingly through the
expressions of the lyric. Researchers have discovered parallels between this poem and sonnets Tristia and Amores of Ovid . A few interpretations have

The Theme Of Love InShall I Compare Thee To A Summer's Day?
Uncontrollably, the mind is what intertwines with our relationships with a pulse of immediate reactions that are long lasting. There are feelings that
begin to build up when our mind is sparked like a light filled with sensation. Creating what may or may not be, the ambience that our mind is placed in
is indescribable with the grace of poetry. A young man is immortal until the world can no longer remember what has been written. The swift beauty of
a tragic event ending leads to the rise of power. What one's past could reflect into their future can turn out to be an escape for the troubling horrors that
no longer can be kept inside. William Shakespeare, Langston Hughes, and Robert Hayden poems captivated the mind with their share of relationships.
All three poems are created to captivate the mind and provoke the reader to fill the void of connections. The mood within "Shall I compare thee to a
summer's day?", "Suicide's Note", and "The Whipping" illustrates the author's purpose in contributing to interconnected relationships. Thus as mood is
created throughout a poem, interconnected relationships can be illustrated in "Shall I compare thee to a summer's day?" through the eyes of mankind.
The line two of "Shall I compare thee to a summer's day?" ties in the relationship between beauty and memory. "Thou art more lovely and more
temperate." The beauty of a human is incomparable to even a summer's day. It is seen that nature is true beauty, but particularly in this poem,

The interest that dealt with violence is portrayed through the novels Sanctuary and Requiem For A Nun. Both related by its violence, in Requiem For
A Nun a complete act of violence takes form other than in the Sanctuary it is meant for a provoking shocking response, both violence is stressed not
through sensation but because it has opposite modes of response. In both novels acts of murder is portrayed through events of adventure, crime and

The grim protagonist struggles to keep tradition in the change from the old to the new South. The dusty life of Emily's holds murder, odd acts, and

That principle is the southern social ethical tradition which Faulkner possesses effortlessly. Being a traditional man with modern south soaked in, it is

First Love is a poem written by John Clare, and straight away just by looking at the title we know what this poem is about. He uses very strong
and powerful language in the first verse of the Sonnet and he is talking about how in love he is. In the first line he says that I never was "struck",
almost as if he was hit by love, even though we know he doesn't mean the literal term of being hurt by this. He was struck by love at first sight
which struck suddenly and so "sweet". He is describing her beauty and saying that it is like a blooming flower which stole his heart almost as if his
heart could be taken away from his body and be a separate part of him.
He then goes on to say in lines five to nine to speak about the effect of her beauty on him. His face turned pale almost a "deadly pale" and his "legs
refused to walk away". He is transfixed with her and cannot move. His "life and all seemed to turn to clay." In the second verse he is saying that all
the blood is rushing to his face and took his sight away. He is blushing which takes away his sight. He is blinded by love. We know that he cannot see

Sonnet 43: How Do I Love Thee? "How Do I Love Thee?" is just one of the many love poems that Elizabeth Browning had written in her lifetime. It
expresses the unconditional love she has for her husband by listing the many ways she loves thee. Browning lists these ways by using a sonnet layout,
many metaphors, and daily situations. There are many different poetry forms, one being a sonnet. It originates from the Italian word 'sonetto', which
means "a little sound or song." (Poem.org) A sonnet is a short rhyming poem with fourteen lines, usually with ten syllables in each line. They are
strong examples of poetry with a strict form rather than a free verse. The first quatrain of the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It gives us a sense that this love is not just puppy love, but instead it is a strong neverending love. She also indicates that her love is not forced and it
is given freely. This specifies that she wants to love thee and does not have to be influenced. By saying she loves purely, she implies that any other
admiration will not be take into consideration. Browning considers this being pure, which is an attribute of loving. She then goes into the next
four line: "I love thee with the passion put to use In my old griefs, and with my childhood's faith. I love thee with a love I seemed to lose With my
lost saints.I love thee with the breath, Smiles, tears, of all my life;" (Poetry Foundation) Old griefs in this statement is talking about something bad
that's happened, where you're so angry and have so much of that feeling. Browning is using a metaphor to compare this feeling with love. By
converting all of this anger into love, it's like saying you're using all of your energy that you used being bitter in the past." She also involves her
childhood's faith. As a child we all had faith in a lot of things. By converting this faith into love, it makes this bond even more unbreakable. When she
speaks about the lost saint, this too it also about faith. It's meaning that you take all of the power from loving a hero and converting it to loving thee, it
too will build up just how much she loves thee.

Analysis Of Fortune Hath Taken Thee Away My Love
Fortune – fine or poor, remains a top priority in Sir Walter Raleigh's poem, "Fortune Hath Taken Thee Away, My love." Each stanza is drenched in
depressing diction; as a result, not much of the poem can be taken so literally. There are six quatrains in this poem: In the first quatrain, the author
introduces to the reader he has lost his love because fortune took it or her away; never in the poem does the author give a specific answer as to
who or what his love is. Although, in the third line, Raleigh does refer to his love as "princess," so we could assume the subject of this poem and
his love is female. Continuing on to the second quatrain, the man goes on to say fortune took away everything from him, just by taking his love
away. Because of this, the author now makes fortune, itself, a mortal enemy. Next, in the third quatrain, the author becomes angry, telling himself all
of the reactions to the loss are in vain. He curses his eyes for weeping, his sighs and his continued search for his love. Moving into the fourth
quatrain, the author accepts sorrow as his new princess, in place of the one he lost; he begins to accept his new loss. In comparison to the second
quatrain, in the fifth, the author is almost glad to be able to experience any kind of fortune, due to the fact even kings experience fortune. Finally, in
the sixth quatrain the author brings in the supernatural force of Cupid. He goes on to say if Cupid had used wisdom's eyes, the author would not be

The internet and the people on it can be very crucial. Social media allows people to express themselves in ways they feel can't in the actual world.
They express their feelings, their open to their own opinions, and so forth. However, the internet also consists of people who give unnecessary,
mean, and hateful opinions to other people for reasons that no one truly understands. The podcast "Act One. Ask Not For Whom The Bell Trolls; It
Trolls for Thee" by Lindsey West, is about a female who was constantly getting backlashed over the internet by whom she referred to as "trolls." The
internet is usually where people go to voice their opinions over what they feel is right or wrong; with Lindsey West, she had voiced her opinion and
what she felt was wrong about male comedians using the rape term too often and using carelessly. A result of West voicing her opinion

who she is, it made him rage because he felt threatened. After West and her troll spoke, he apologized and she forgave him, she gave him the benefit
of the doubt that he had changed for the better. She liked her troll regardless of what he did and how he made her felt. People on the internet make

Each video of the "Get thee to a nunnery" scene was interpreted in a different way. the videos took place in a different location, and the some of them
evoked different emotions. The Mel Gibson scene took place in an open area. When Hamlet found out that Ophelia father was listening he seemed
more hurt than angry. In the David Tennant the scene took place in an open room. In this scene hamlet found out someone was listening also. This time
he reacted angry and a little violent. Out of all five of the videos Tennant seemed to interpret the scene the best. The emotions created in the scene really

My mistress' eyes are nothing like the sun…
–––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––
1 My mistress' eyes are nothing like the sun,
Coral is far more red than her lips red:
If snow be white, why then her breasts are dun,
If hair be wires, black wires grow on her head.
5 I have seen roses damask'd, red and white,
But no such roses see I in her cheeks,
And in some perfumes is there more delight
Than in the breath that from my mistress reeks.
I love to hear her speak, – yet well I know
10 That music hath a far more pleasing sound,
I grant I never saw a goddess go, –
My mistress when she walks treads on the ground,
And yet by heaven, I think my love as rare
As any belied with false compare.
Through line one to twelve Shakespeare is describing his mistress by using descriptions that other poets would have used and saying that his mistress
has no such qualities.
He almost insults her through the sonnet with these negative comparisons. Even though line nine, "I love to hear her speak," sounds as though
Shakespeare is going to complement his, mistress, he changes the statement with the word "yet" and goes onto say that music "hath a far more pleasing
sound."

Analysis Of If I Forget Thee, Oh Earth
1. I was, initially, struck by the imagery in the author's writing. With the vivid descriptions and general lucidity coupled with the slow revelations
throughout the plot, the style of writing keeps you engaged. This impressed me most, as well as the clever usage of a biblical quote in the title to
allude towards the themes in the story.
2. The genre of "If I Forget Thee, Oh Earth" is science fiction.
3. We find the exposition in our introduction to Marvin, the young protagonist who seems to be living in some sort of lunar colony with the remains
of humanity, as his father leads him through "long, echoing corridors." The rising action occurs as Marvin is allowed Outside for the very first time, at
which point his father brings him to a vehicle and drives them away from their Colony. In the climax, Marvin sees Earth, or at least what remains of it.
His father explains to him how Earth was destroyed, that their Colony is all that is left. In the falling action, we see Marvin understanding "the purpose
of this pilgrimage." He knows he will not venture to Earth, but in the denouement, Marvin decides to pass this story– and a dream of returning to Earth
along with it– to his own son one day. Marvin and his father return to their colony.
4. Our protagonist is Marvin, the main character. There is no clear antagonist, except perhaps the past and future of humanity and the destruction said
humanity brought upon itself.
5. Marvin is extremely mature for his age, not to mention

Analysis Of Thee I Sing
Of Thee I Sing Analysis As actors, we are forced to absorb everything around us and express our views on the world. Of Thee I Sing succeeds as a
play that reflects the world around them while poking fun at it. The play itself was fun, colorful, and interesting. From its high energized actors to its
well choreographed dancing and singing. Of Thee I Sing is a musical that is full of terrific acting, dancing, staging, and stage directing. Anyone who
did not see this production made a mistake not to see it.
Of Thee I Sing is about John P. Wintergreen, who runs for President of the United States on the "
love" platform. When he falls in love with the sensible
Mary Turner instead of Diana Devereaux, the beautiful pageant winner selected for him, he gets into political hot water. The main characters ofthe play
are John P. Wintergreen ( Joseph Edward Herr) a presidential candidate who, is running his campaign on love. Mary Turner ( Jennifer Totcky)
Wintergreens love interest later wife. Diana Devereaux (Katie Whittermore) contest winner Wintergreens administration chose to be his wife before
he fell in love with Turner. The play ends with the servants wheeling a large bed into the room, where Mary sits with the babies. Wintergreen leads
everyone in proclaiming, "Of Thee I Sing." The acting in Of Thee I Sing was nothing but spectacular. The acting from all of the actors was
believable. The way how they projected their voices was well done and the how they delivered their lines was well executed. An actor who did these
and more was Kyle Laing and Lexi Nieto. Kyle practically stole every scene he was in. He fully embodied his character. From his fast dialogue to
his witty dialect. His pacing was great, he did not rush through his lines nor did he slow down. It was well paced. My favorite part of his
performance were his facial expressions, he was very charismatic with the time he had on stage to express himself. Lexi Nieto's performance was
nothing spectacular. Despite being a member of the ensemble, Nieto captivated my attention every time she was on stage. She made bold acting
choices through her hilarious facial expressions, but still managed to not distract from the story. There was clarity for all

home faster. She shouts out loud: ...Hie thee hither, That I may pour my spirits in thine ear And chastise with the valor of my tongue All the impedes
thee from the golden round (I.v.21–34)
"Hie thee hither" means Lady Macbeth wants her husband to come home faster, so she can talk to him and persuade him to "catch the nearest way",
which is murder Duncan. Meanwhile, there is a metaphor that compares the "pouring evil spirits" to the thoughts that Lady Macbeth will instil into
Macbeth's mind later. Lady Macbeth wants to use her ideal to influence and convince Macbeth to kill Duncan. Thus,

Comparing Shakespeare's 'Shall I Compare Thee to a...
Poetry Comparison There are certain themes and ideas which appear over and over again in literature, no matter what the genre or form. Poems
which were written centuries apart can echo similar ideas about life and humanity. Love is one such theme which presents itself repeatedly as
seen in the poetry of William Shakespeare and that of Robert Burns. Each poem, though written more than two hundred years apart, explains what
it feels like for the poet to feel love for the singular object of their affection. The poem "Shall I Compare Thee to a Summer's Day" by Shakespeare
and Burns' "A Red, Red Rose" share common images and themes with the intention of instilling in the reader the impression of their love and in
explaining the depth of their emotion for the beloved as well as the respective poets ideas about the very nature of love and how it can be both
passionately fulfilling and devastating. William Shakespeare's 18 Sonnet, more popularly known as the "Shall I Compare Thee" sonnet, is about a
lover who is speaking to his beloved. Most sonnets serve this same function; to profess love from the sonneteer to some individual whom he loves. In
these poems, the lover always uses the most amazing adjectives to describe the woman, or sometimes the man, that he loves. The poet describes every
component of his beloved, such as her hair and her lips and her eyes. Although not a sonnet, Robert Burns' poem has the same function; it is a love
poem from the unnamed narrator to the

Analysis Of How Do I Love Thee By Elizabeth Barrete
"How do I love thee?" is the question Elizabeth Barrett answers in the famous Sonnet 43 of Sonnets from the Portuguese. Elizabeth was a prominent
Victorian poet who wrote this sonnet and others before marrying her husband Robert Browning. Sonnet 43 is well known sonnet published in 1850. It
emphasizes a theme of the depth of love Elizabeth has for the man she adores. Elizabeth's everlasting love is well expressed through the use of
appropriate sound, figurative language, and literary elements. The use of sound helped to make the poem light, but also intense. Her use of sound
with certain words conveyed a more serious tone when expressing her depth of love but also added playfulness. In the opening of the sonnet she
asks a question, "How do I love thee? Let me count the ways." The question is simple but gets the readers attention and interest in how she will
answer. In line two she goes on to answer the question with, " I love thee to the depth and breadth and height." Her use of "thee" instead of "you"
shows more of a deeper bond then simply using modern language. It explains how she will demonstrate her love by listing examples she has for
him and how far her love stretches. Furthermore, she explains her concept of love, "My soul can reach when feeling out of sight For the ends of
Being and ideal Grace." To her, love for her significant other is stronger than faith. The way she wrote that line shows that her love can surpass all
odds and obstacles, even when her faith is low. The words "I love thee" is used over and over in the poem to stress the importance and constant love
that is there. The phrases that are used show how consistent her love is. The sound "th" that is used throughout the sonnet creates a breathiness, which
helps to lighten the tone. The different sound play in the sonnet create a fun, but also seriousness to how deep her love is. The chosen figurative
language created a connection to the depth of her love. Metaphors, hyperboles, and imagery were used to help the reader understand how deep her
love is. In the sonnet Elizabeth makes connections to faith and how love goes deeper. The symbolism that is shown is the stages in life. She makes
references to childhood, adult hood and death

Shall I Compare Thee To A Summer's Day Figurative Language
Throughout the four seasons people would mostly say that summer is there favorite season. Why do people tend to enjoy summer so much?
Could it be that during the summer the weather gets hot during the day and warm at night? Could it be that you can venture off to different places
like the beach with your family and friends or sticking your toes in the water or sand? Whatever the case may be the summer time seems to be the
season to have fun, laugh, and relax. In the Backpack Literature textbook on chapter 14, it focuses on figures of speech. Figures of speech is a big
part of literature that people need to learn. How is figures of speech very important to our everyday use? I feel like in literature it is important for
people to understand the meanings that the authors and also yourself are expressing in a story, poem, speech, and many more literary contexts.
Dealing with figurative language you are going to see examples like metaphors, similes, oxymoron's, personifications, and so much that refer in a
context. In this particular poem that I will be discussing about has metaphors and similes. The poem, Shall I Compare Thee to a Summer's Day by
Howard Moss. There is always other version on this poem by William Shakespeare that was a sonnet but I feel like Howard Moss wanted to put he
own spin–off of the Shakespeare's poem. In Howard Moss poem, Shall I Compare Thee to a Summer's Day, he express how much the person he

The poems second argument is marked with a discourse marker, in this case "But". The poems second argument is why the woman is better then
summer, Shakespeare says "Sommers lease hath all too short a date….but thy eternall sommer shall not fade" Shakespeare is saying that summer
ends and fades, but you never will. The last two lines of "Shall I Compare Thee", "So long as men can see, so long lives this, and this gives life to
thee." The first thing I noticed about the final couplet is that they are indented from the rest of the text; I believe this is to give this final couplet
the feel of a conclusion. These two lines mean that as long as people can read then this woman's beauty will live forever and that in the poem she
can never die. In "The Flea" the poems first argument is when Donne uses the flea to add impact and emphasise his point that her losing her
virginity is not a big deal. He says it has already sucked from him and from her and that in this flea their blood is mingled. Donne uses this type of
sexual innuendo a lot in this poem. After Donne says this the woman tries to kill the flea. When this happens Donne changes the direction he was
going with his argument and starts to say that this flea is a very big deal, that they have been married inside this flea and that if she kills it she will
commit not just one crime but in killing the flea she

Heritage Lecture Series: With This Ring I Thee Wed
May 5–Heritage Lecture Series: "With This Ring I Thee Wed"
This lecture is all about wedding fashions, accessories, customs, traditions and superstitions. Celtic Scottish wedding practices were part of ceremonies
for many hundreds of years and had roots in pagan rituals. Tying the knot originated from the bride and groom ripping their wedding plaids (clan
tartans) and tying the two strips together as a symbol of the unity of the two families. Centuries ago in Ireland the most popular day to be married was
a Sunday. In ancient times, the wedding kiss was considered legally binding and represented acceptance of the contract of marriage by the bride and
groom. Hand fasting is an ancient Celtic tradition that involved tying the hands of the betrothed together well in advance of their actual wedding day.
It is similar to an engagement, a time when both parties decide if they really wish to commit. Choosing the colour of your wedding dress was very
important. In the 16th and 17th centuries girls in their teens married in pale green, a sign of fertility. A mature girl in her twenties wore a brown dress,
and older women even wore black.
The trend of wearing an all white wedding dress began with royalty during the Victorian era. Did you know that rain on your wedding day is actually

Suddenly they have to live their life like they may be gone the next day and the day they are living in is their last day on this earth. There is a fire
sparked in their life and everything that they do suddenly matters to them. Even the little things they do for a daily routine, such as brushing their
hair in the morning or picking out an outfit the night before for the day to come. He could very well be trying to express this kind of love for her
by stating it in the poem. Maybe he already does that and he wants to share it with the world. Like the fact that every little thing that she does may
mean something to him and may put him in a state of awe. Or in the same sense he could be showing the world that he cares for her because he
finds the little things in life that could make her happy. Toward the end of the poem it also states that he loves this woman with his childhood's faith.
I think what he means is that he loves her like a child would. Looking back, as a child, nothing really mattered. Everyone that you knew shared what
they had with hardly any questions asked. Your parents were the coolest people you that you knew. You could roam free with mismatched clothes and

Shall Earth No More Inspire Thee By Jon Krakauer
Long ago, people depended on nature for shelter, food, and survival. However, as time goes on, new inventions develop, and society improved except
nature which humans still depend on for survival. Some people today think that nature is not important, or at least not as important as their phone or
computer. Humans understand that food comes from plants and animals and paper from trees, but they do not reflect on how much they take from nature
compared to the small actions they take to give back. Emily Bronte's "Shall Earth No More Inspire Thee", Jack London's "To Build a Fire" and Jon
Krakauer's Into The Wild all display the very weak relationship between man and nature because humans no longer feel dependent on nature.
Emily Bronte's "Shall Earth No More Inspire Thee" illustrates man's weak connection with nature when humans do not spend time to interact with
nature. The speaker of the poem is nature because he or she describes how it has powers of nature throughout the poem. When the speaker asks the
reader to "return and dwell with [him or her]" (Bronte l.28), it is nature asking humans to go and spend time with it. This can be because today
everyone depends on advanced technology such as computers, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Elizabeth Barrett Browning's "How Do I love thee?"
This poem by Elizabeth Barrett Browning is one of many she penned for her husband Robert Browning. Using the basic form of an Italian sonnet with
its fourteen lines and strict rhyme scheme – she manages to produce a surprisingly passionate poem.
The poet begins with the question, "How do I love thee?"–and it is this which sets the mood of the sonnet, as she tries to quantify, and articulate the
depth of her feelings towards her husband. She uses biblical references and religious similes throughout the verse, comparing and equating her love to
be as unconditional and pure –as like unto God's.
How do I love thee? Let me count the ways.

Although it appears that her love towards her husband eclipses everything else, Elizabeth ends this poem with the acknowledgement that it's God's will
if this perfect love continues after death. This recognition of God's supremacy, typifies the fervent, Christian beliefs which colored and shaped her
ideals of love.
This poem to me, symbolizes the purest form of love between husband and wife. Although you could argue that it is written from a selfish perspective,
in that she only speaks of her love, her feelings–you have to bear in mind that in Victorian society, women lived their lives solely through their
husbands. The middle–class ladies didn't work, and didn't have a life outside their homes. They dedicated all of their time, energies and passions into
keeping their men happy and contented; and in return, were loved, pampered and protected from the harsh realities of life. Even though this idea of
total subjection and passivity, wouldn't have a hope of success in today's society, the level of trust and commitment these two "Romantic Poets"
apparently share, could be the ideal that all couples should aspire to.
In sharp contrast to Browning idealistic and spiritual love poetry of the 1800s, Seamus Heaney's Twice Shy uses an altogether more contemporary and
realistic style of prose too describe love in the 20th century. Heaney

Research Essay: How Do I Love Thee
Elizabeth Barrett Browning asks, "How do I love thee? Let me count the ways." (439). There are innumerable ways you are able to love to another
individual. Each line of the poem answers her original question, and then goes on to prove (with evidence) that her love is indeed real. Browning
describes and expresses her distinct feelings very literally about the one she loves in this poem. She explains love by listing and describing many of
the ways that she knows how to love and compares it to circumstances which the readers can relate to. Browning uses love to show readers that there

with a love I seemed to lose with my lost saints," which shows her maturity and evolution into adulthood. No matter how old she gets, her love will
continue to grow with her and thrive dissimilar to young adults who lose faith as they get older. She desperately wants to stay with her man on Earth
and in Heaven, "–and, if God choose, I shall but love thee better after death." (Lines 12–14) shows that even in death she will have the ability to forever

The theme is that love is always present, regardless of if your living or in the after–life. This poem describes a love that is so passionate, true and pure
that she will go to any length to show and describe it. Browning expresses the speakers love by repeating it often and going into great deal

very important objects that help create and give detail in the poems. Each poem has is short but has so much meaning to the very few words it has.
The poem Discovery was written by Michael S, Harper. In this poem he discusses how he is laying down with the one he loves in a dark room, he
waits for her to fall asleep and then he does, he then awakes to her staring at him with the light by the bed on. This poem is very loving and caring
with the description it has.

How Do I Love Thee And A Dream

  • 1. How Do I Love Thee and A Dream Since the beginning of language, poetry has a role in the recollection of memories, emotions, and creativity. From the oldest surviving poem: Tale of the ship wrecked salor, by Hiratic, to todays poems; poetry has been a staple in the literary world. It is vital language because it is a literary vehicle that takes us on a ride of emotions. Poetry according to William Wordsworth should be, "The spontaneous overflow of powerful feelings." Poems such as A Dream, by Edgar Allan Poe, and How do I love thee, by Elizabeth Barrett Browning, are perfect examples of good poetry, they have very different views of the same subject, which give a powerful effect on the reader. The poem, How do I love thee, by Elizabeth Barrett Browning, is about ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Poe's intention was to show how a dream may be the only thing you have, but it is only a lie. Another example is "Ah! what is not a dream by day,To him whose eyes are cast... Hath cheered me as a lovely beam". He is confused about having such a dream when his life is bad. He writes the poem in his point of view, he does this through the use of the language. This poem talks about the motivation, anxiety, and hope you get when dreaming, but wake up knowing it was never true. The three verses "That holy dream– that holy dream, While all the world were chiding, Hath cheered me as a lovely beam" indirectly shows the importance of a dream in man, how it can give a person freedom from what he is suffering. On the other hand, "What could there be more purely bright, In Truth's day–star?" also indicates that every man must be capable of facing the reality and keep on going such as the dream is only a truth that will never be true. Never be crushed by your dreams is the main purpose of the poem. The title "A Dream" can give a sarcastic tone indirectly showing the very little importance a dream is. But can give an opposite tone to the poem such as a glimpse of hope. Depending on the reader, the poem can give diverse emotions. Edgar Allan Poe uses many literary devices in his poem "A Dream", and uses them to increase the quality of his poem and make it be more lively. Poe applies the literary device of imagery by using the terms day and night, since light and dark bring a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. I Tend My Flowers For Thee Rhetorical Devices Emily Dickinson's "I tend my flowers for thee–" (Fr 367) is traditionally read as an expression of longing and desire. Her use of vivid descriptions of nature conjure images of soft petals juxtaposed against those thorny cacti and the notion of dreams interrupted by violent passion. However, a feminist reading of the poem reveals that it is Emily Dickinson's critical commentary on the patriarchal ideology that a woman's sense of personal fulfillment is contingent upon the presence of a romantic partner. In her early thirties, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... "I tend my flowers for thee– " is wrought with vivid descriptions of not only plants and flowers, but also animal life, colors and sounds. In his 2015 article "What Do Collections Tell Us?–Teaching Dickinson's Poems, the Herbarium, and Contemporary and Historical Material Practices", Zach Marshall asserts that, in order to increase critical productivity, students should read Dickinson's poems in tandem with excerpts from Belknap Press's facsimile reproduction of Emily Dickinson's Herbarium. Marshall goes on to explain that this process will encourage interactivity between the students and Dickinson's poems "within the often abstracted discipline of literary studies". This pedagogical technique "also offers critical benefits, such as pushing students to think critically about the curatorial practices that influence the texts they work with, focusing attention on Dickinson's material writing practices, providing a context for understanding more unusual poems, and even forging a way for students to see connections between poetic practices and ecological practices" (Marshall 58–59). This method of analyzing Dickinson's poems in which she utilizes plant imagery can provide useful supplemental critical ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. How Do I Love Thee? Let me Count the Ways by Elizabeth... A flame of passion is contained within the heart, yet is love contained in a mere flame of passion? This timeless saying embodies the ultimate declaration of love written by Elizabeth Barrett Browning. "How Do I Love Thee? Let me Count the Ways" is a poem bathed in rhyme and inundated in sentimental avowals. This sonnet shows the perpetual love that Browning shares with her husband and how that love can never be destroyed by any power of human or spiritual nature (Elizabeth Barrett Browning's: Sonnet 45). Based on answering one, seemingly simple yet complex, question, "how do I love thee?" (Browning Line 1) is what this poem is based on. Using literary tools and techniques, Browning unleashes the powerful emotions that hide behind the ink ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... "I love thee to the level of everyday's/Most quite need, by sun and candlelight" (Browning Line 5–6) Browning continues using anaphora with the continually repeated "thee" (Browning Line 5) and "the" (Browning Line 5). Explaining how her love is persistent throughout every second of the day, even in the simplest of needs, synecdoche is used in "sun" (Browning Line 6) for day and "candle–light" (Browning Line 6) for night. Browning likens her deep feelings to religious, spiritual, emotional and even political aspiration and goes on to employ repetition, the metaphor of Christian religious faith and a musical metrical and rhyme scheme to develop and convey her ideas beautifully (Swanhorst). She addresses her sweetheart with simplicity, charm and a refreshing innocence: "How do I love thee? Let me count the ways. /I love thee to the depth and breadth and height/my soul can reach" (Browning Lines 1–3) is deceptively simple and will be repeated many times in different ways. In order to express her wild and free feelings in a very restricted sonnet form, Browning uses repetition often to help her fit in with the stresses and unstresses of the sonnet pattern. The iambic meter dictates strict adherence. Moving on, the word "freely" (Browning Line 7) not only evokes ideas of freedom in ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. All Thee Light We Cannot See: Character Analysis Humans since the beginning of their existence on Earth have inherently been inclined to be good as opposed to being evil. This idea can be be loosely argued as devastation by humans swept the land in the past events leading up to the present, but also vice versa there has been kindhearted movements by civilizations of people that helped humanity. Created in the image and likeness of God, there has been some guiding lights and principles that have led humanity to its current stage in time. Every person has the tools inside of them to choose, in a given scenario, what is the right thing to do and what is not. Throughout this essay, the best and worst of human character will be discussed in the book All thee Light We Cannot See. In order to provide a good contrast between the good and evil acts its is only fair to start with the acts that devastated the lives of millions. • 6. Shall I Compare Thee To A Summer's Day By Anne Bradstreet... Love is such a strong word that we sometimes use it to the best of our ability. While reading I was very intrigued by two poems that I feel was wrote more so on the love side and trying to show or I would say express themselves through the poem. The poems Shall I compare thee to a summer's day? by William Shakespeare and To My Dear and Loving Husband by Anne Bradstreet are two poems I feel is trying to expresslove, but in two totally different ways. The poems are bringing meaning to the word love and showing that it doesn't have to be used only to show a connection between two different people, but it can be used in other ways as well. In the poem Shall I compare thee to a summer's day? By William Shakespeare, the author is showing his love through nature. He is actually comparing every little thing he feels is right about his companion to something in nature. He says, " Thou art more lovely and more temperate." From this the author is saying one's love is more lovable and is hotter than summer. He then goes on to say, "Rough winds do shake the darling buds of May." He is saying that before summer comes its spring time and the windy weather is knocking all of the buds off the flowers and making them new, so he is she is more better now that they have gone through a rough time before. After that he says, "And summer's lease hath all too short a date." He means by this that the summer time goes by very fast, so they have to savor every moment together during this time while ... Thee Checkers Speech Rhetorical Analasis "Checkers," The American Dog in Disguise: A Rhetorical Analysis of Nixon's Address In "The Checkers Speech," Richard Nixon responds to criticism regarding an alleged "secret fund." At this time, 1952, Nixon was running for vice president with presidential candidate Dwight D. Eisenhower. Eisenhower was enjoying enormous popularity when the rumor surfaced one month before the election. Nixon was accused of accepting a supplemental salary of $18,000 dollars, contributed by a group of supporters back in his home state of California. There were also rumors that Eisenhower would drop Nixon from the ticket. So Nixon was forced to come up with a remedy for the untimely situation. Not only did he have to convince the American people he was... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Nixon was basically stating that he was a proven enemy of communists and that the democrats assisted them. Finally, Nixon supports Eisenhower by showing that he is qualified to clean up corruption and deal with communists. If one looks closely at Nixon's speech it has a very easy, logical pattern to follow, and allowed him to achieve every goal that he set for himself. One of his main intentions of his speech was to attack the democrats, but at the same time make republicans, including himself, look good. After Nixon built up his own credibility, he began to bash the democrats. He implied that Stevenson and Sparkman had something to hide, unless they do as "I" did and make their finances pubic. Nixon encourages his audience to believe a lot of things that may or may not have been true. One, that he has done nothing morally wrong with using the $18,000 fund because he made his finances public. Two, he is an honest man, and he deserves to be retained as Vice Presidential candidate. Three, rich men such as "Governor Stevenson who inherited a fortune from his father" should not deserve to be president. But, a "modest man" such as himself or Eisenhower, a common man that "God must have loved," should have that chance at office. In general Nixon said that Eisenhower and he, the republican candidates, are qualified to lead the country and democrats are not. Therefore, he only left the American public with the option of electing the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Love in "To His Coy Mistress", "Shall I Compare Thee," "Let Me Not," and "The Flea" The four poems I am going to be comparing are, "To His Coy Mistress," "Shall I Compare Thee," "Let Me Not," and "The Flea." All four of these poems are based on the subject matter of love. The four poems have a lot in common but each poem touches a different aspect of love. Two of the poems, "Shall I Compare Thee", and "Let Me Not", are sonnets and both were written by Shakespeare. "To His Coy Mistress" is written by Andrew Marvell and "The Flea" was written by John Donne. All four of the poems have three parts to them each posing a different argument. Shakespeare is praising his mistress when he says she is 'better than the best' because summer is the best time of the year and Shakespeare is saying she is better than summer. "Thou art more lovely and more temperate" shows that he is saying she is perfect and constantly exquisite". The word "darling" gives the poem an affectionate tone. Shakespeare is also writing to show off his writing skills, this is shown in the last line when he says, "So long lives this and this gives live to thee", because he says his writing will live on forever. It is also written to give his loved one a reminder of mortality. "Nor shall death brag" is the reminder of death and it is personified because it implies death can't take her. The purposes of 'Let Me Not' were to flatter Shakespeare's loved one, remind his beloved of mortality, define love and to show how love is threatened by other things. Romantic flattery is shown when Shakespeare says, "rosie lips and cheeks", it is also describing his beloved. The reminder of death is shown when the poem says, "edge of doome"; this is even more effective than just death because it is describing love until the end of the world. The "edge of doome" also defines love and pontificates it to the end of time. 'Let Me Not' is an imperative because it is a strong ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 10. Comparative Analysis of Shall I compare thee to a... Comparative Analysis of "Shall I compare thee to a summer's day?" by William Shakespeare and The Flea by John Donne 'Shall I compare thee' by Shakespeare focuses on romantic love, whereas Donne's poem, 'The Flea' is all about seduction and sexual love. The situations in the two poems are very different. In 'Shall I compare thee', the poet is shown as a lover who is addressing his lady. His tone is gentle and romantic. He starts with a rhetorical question to which he must answer and therefore he does not put demand upon the lady. The poem gives the impression that it is set perhaps in his room, where he is composing his poem. One thing is for sure and that is that the woman he is addressing is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Both poets use a three part argument although Shakespeare's is in the form of a sonnet whilst Donne's is a three stanza poem. Shakespeare's poem is a sonnet and consists of three quatrains and a rhyming couplet. The first two quatrains start with the rhetorical question 'Shall I compare thee…' and the rest of this section answers this question. However, this question has an obvious answer of 'no' because the next line says, "Thou art more temperate and beautiful". The poet thinks she is perfect, unlike a summer's day. He says that the summer's day is "sometime to hot" and has "rough windes", but she is "more lovely". He uses personification in the line, "And often is his gold complexion dim'd". He uses this technique to show that the sun has a face, which glows, but not always and therefore shows that summer is not perfect, but she is. He describes her as being "temperate" which means that she is moderate compared to the temperamental weather of an English summer. This is one of the things he says to compliment her. The third quatrane starts with the word "but", which signals a change to a different thought. In this quatrane, Shakespeare uses exaggerated claims to show how perfect she is. He says, "Thy eternal Sommer shall not fade, nor lose possession of that faire thou ow'st".

Most researchers concur that the true recipient of the lyric, the mate of pleasant toward oneself, whom the artist is composing, is a man, however the sonnet is generally used to portray a lady. • 13. The Theme Of Love InShall I Compare Thee To A Summer's Day? Uncontrollably, the mind is what intertwines with our relationships with a pulse of immediate reactions that are long lasting. There are feelings that begin to build up when our mind is sparked like a light filled with sensation. Creating what may or may not be, the ambience that our mind is placed in is indescribable with the grace of poetry. A young man is immortal until the world can no longer remember what has been written. The swift beauty of a tragic event ending leads to the rise of power. What one's past could reflect into their future can turn out to be an escape for the troubling horrors that no longer can be kept inside. William Shakespeare, Langston Hughes, and Robert Hayden poems captivated the mind with their share of relationships. All three poems are created to captivate the mind and provoke the reader to fill the void of connections. The mood within "Shall I compare thee to a summer's day?", "Suicide's Note", and "The Whipping" illustrates the author's purpose in contributing to interconnected relationships. Thus as mood is created throughout a poem, interconnected relationships can be illustrated in "Shall I compare thee to a summer's day?" through the eyes of mankind. The line two of "Shall I compare thee to a summer's day?" ties in the relationship between beauty and memory. "Thou art more lovely and more temperate." The beauty of a human is incomparable to even a summer's day. It is seen that nature is true beauty, but particularly in this poem, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Each stanza is drenched in depressing diction; as a result, not much of the poem can be taken so literally. There are six quatrains in this poem: In the first quatrain, the author introduces to the reader he has lost his love because fortune took it or her away; never in the poem does the author give a specific answer as to who or what his love is. Although, in the third line, Raleigh does refer to his love as "princess," so we could assume the subject of this poem and his love is female. Continuing on to the second quatrain, the man goes on to say fortune took away everything from him, just by taking his love away. Because of this, the author now makes fortune, itself, a mortal enemy. Next, in the third quatrain, the author becomes angry, telling himself all of the reactions to the loss are in vain. He curses his eyes for weeping, his sighs and his continued search for his love. Moving into the fourth quatrain, the author accepts sorrow as his new princess, in place of the one he lost; he begins to accept his new loss. In comparison to the second quatrain, in the fifth, the author is almost glad to be able to experience any kind of fortune, due to the fact even kings experience fortune. Finally, in the sixth quatrain the author brings in the supernatural force of Cupid. He goes on to say if Cupid had used wisdom's eyes, the author would not be suffering as ... Poems which were written centuries apart can echo similar ideas about life and humanity. Love is one such theme which presents itself repeatedly as seen in the poetry of William Shakespeare and that of Robert Burns. Each poem, though written more than two hundred years apart, explains what it feels like for the poet to feel love for the singular object of their affection. The poem "Shall I Compare Thee to a Summer's Day" by Shakespeare and Burns' "A Red, Red Rose" share common images and themes with the intention of instilling in the reader the impression of their love and in explaining the depth of their emotion for the beloved as well as the respective poets ideas about the very nature of love and how it can be both passionately fulfilling and devastating. William Shakespeare's 18 Sonnet, more popularly known as the "Shall I Compare Thee" sonnet, is about a lover who is speaking to his beloved. • 31. Analysis Of How Do I Love Thee By Elizabeth Barrete "How do I love thee?" is the question Elizabeth Barrett answers in the famous Sonnet 43 of Sonnets from the Portuguese. Elizabeth was a prominent Victorian poet who wrote this sonnet and others before marrying her husband Robert Browning. Sonnet 43 is well known sonnet published in 1850. It emphasizes a theme of the depth of love Elizabeth has for the man she adores. Elizabeth's everlasting love is well expressed through the use of appropriate sound, figurative language, and literary elements. The use of sound helped to make the poem light, but also intense. Her use of sound with certain words conveyed a more serious tone when expressing her depth of love but also added playfulness. In the opening of the sonnet she asks a question, "How do I love thee? Let me count the ways." The question is simple but gets the readers attention and interest in how she will answer. In line two she goes on to answer the question with, " I love thee to the depth and breadth and height." Her use of "thee" instead of "you" shows more of a deeper bond then simply using modern language. It explains how she will demonstrate her love by listing examples she has for him and how far her love stretches. Furthermore, she explains her concept of love, "My soul can reach when feeling out of sight For the ends of Being and ideal Grace." To her, love for her significant other is stronger than faith. The way she wrote that line shows that her love can surpass all odds and obstacles, even when her faith is low. The words "I love thee" is used over and over in the poem to stress the importance and constant love that is there. The phrases that are used show how consistent her love is. The sound "th" that is used throughout the sonnet creates a breathiness, which helps to lighten the tone. The different sound play in the sonnet create a fun, but also seriousness to how deep her love is. The chosen figurative language created a connection to the depth of her love. Metaphors, hyperboles, and imagery were used to help the reader understand how deep her love is. In the sonnet Elizabeth makes connections to faith and how love goes deeper. The poems second argument is why the woman is better then summer, Shakespeare says "Sommers lease hath all too short a date….but thy eternall sommer shall not fade" Shakespeare is saying that summer ends and fades, but you never will. The last two lines of "Shall I Compare Thee", "So long as men can see, so long lives this, and this gives life to thee." The first thing I noticed about the final couplet is that they are indented from the rest of the text; I believe this is to give this final couplet the feel of a conclusion. These two lines mean that as long as people can read then this woman's beauty will live forever and that in the poem she can never die. In "The Flea" the poems first argument is when Donne uses the flea to add impact and emphasise his point that her losing her virginity is not a big deal. He says it has already sucked from him and from her and that in this flea their blood is mingled. Donne uses this type of sexual innuendo a lot in this poem. After Donne says this the woman tries to kill the flea. When this happens Donne changes the direction he was going with his argument and starts to say that this flea is a very big deal, that they have been married inside this flea and that if she kills it she will commit not just one crime but in killing the flea she ... • 34. Heritage Lecture Series: With This Ring I Thee Wed May 5–Heritage Lecture Series: "With This Ring I Thee Wed" This lecture is all about wedding fashions, accessories, customs, traditions and superstitions. Celtic Scottish wedding practices were part of ceremonies for many hundreds of years and had roots in pagan rituals. Tying the knot originated from the bride and groom ripping their wedding plaids (clan tartans) and tying the two strips together as a symbol of the unity of the two families. Centuries ago in Ireland the most popular day to be married was a Sunday. In ancient times, the wedding kiss was considered legally binding and represented acceptance of the contract of marriage by the bride and groom. Hand fasting is an ancient Celtic tradition that involved tying the hands of the betrothed together well in advance of their actual wedding day. It is similar to an engagement, a time when both parties decide if they really wish to commit. Choosing the colour of your wedding dress was very important. In the 16th and 17th centuries girls in their teens married in pale green, a sign of fertility. A mature girl in her twenties wore a brown dress, and older women even wore black. The trend of wearing an all white wedding dress began with royalty during the Victorian era. • 35. How Do I Love Thee Poem Analysis Essay Macee Trecek Dr. Hebert English Comp. II 28 March 2011 Poem Analysis In How do I love thee by Elizabeth Barrett Browning. I believe that the person talking is professing about a kind of love that can stand the test of time. You know that kind of love. Every day and moment is cherished by both. Each person knows almost everything about each other and they have been together for what would seem like forever. It is very rare these days to see a younger generation finding that love. And in a way it is understandable with all the new technology that can help with relationships. Back then there was not a thing called therapy or a marriage counselor. The couple worked on their problems by communicating to one another and not having someone ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Suddenly they have to live their life like they may be gone the next day and the day they are living in is their last day on this earth. There is a fire sparked in their life and everything that they do suddenly matters to them. Even the little things they do for a daily routine, such as brushing their hair in the morning or picking out an outfit the night before for the day to come. He could very well be trying to express this kind of love for her by stating it in the poem. Maybe he already does that and he wants to share it with the world. Like the fact that every little thing that she does may mean something to him and may put him in a state of awe. Or in the same sense he could be showing the world that he cares for her because he finds the little things in life that could make her happy. Toward the end of the poem it also states that he loves this woman with his childhood's faith. I think what he means is that he loves her like a child would. Looking back, as a child, nothing really mattered. Everyone that you knew shared what they had with hardly any questions asked. Your parents were the coolest people you that you knew. You could roam free with mismatched clothes and shoes and no one would care and you could just play and everyone was nice to you no matter the color of your skin, how much money your parents made or where you were from. I believe that the author of this poem is trying to convey that the speaker has this kind of thinking ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 37. Shall Earth No More Inspire Thee By Jon Krakauer Long ago, people depended on nature for shelter, food, and survival. However, as time goes on, new inventions develop, and society improved except nature which humans still depend on for survival. Some people today think that nature is not important, or at least not as important as their phone or computer. Humans understand that food comes from plants and animals and paper from trees, but they do not reflect on how much they take from nature compared to the small actions they take to give back. Emily Bronte's "Shall Earth No More Inspire Thee", Jack London's "To Build a Fire" and Jon Krakauer's Into The Wild all display the very weak relationship between man and nature because humans no longer feel dependent on nature. Emily Bronte's "Shall Earth No More Inspire Thee" illustrates man's weak connection with nature when humans do not spend time to interact with nature. The speaker of the poem is nature because he or she describes how it has powers of nature throughout the poem. When the speaker asks the reader to "return and dwell with [him or her]" (Bronte l.28), it is nature asking humans to go and spend time with it. This can be because today everyone depends on advanced technology such as computers, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He was unable to reach his destination due to his lack of experience with nature and that he was lost when facing nature alone. • 38. Elizabeth Barrett Browning's How Do I love thee? Essay Elizabeth Barrett Browning's "How Do I love thee?" This poem by Elizabeth Barrett Browning is one of many she penned for her husband Robert Browning. Using the basic form of an Italian sonnet with its fourteen lines and strict rhyme scheme – she manages to produce a surprisingly passionate poem. The poet begins with the question, "How do I love thee?"–and it is this which sets the mood of the sonnet, as she tries to quantify, and articulate the depth of her feelings towards her husband. She uses biblical references and religious similes throughout the verse, comparing and equating her love to be as unconditional and pure –as like unto God's. How do I love thee? Let me count the ways. I love thee to the depth and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Although it appears that her love towards her husband eclipses everything else, Elizabeth ends this poem with the acknowledgement that it's God's will if this perfect love continues after death. This recognition of God's supremacy, typifies the fervent, Christian beliefs which colored and shaped her ideals of love. This poem to me, symbolizes the purest form of love between husband and wife. Although you could argue that it is written from a selfish perspective, in that she only speaks of her love, her feelings–you have to bear in mind that in Victorian society, women lived their lives solely through their husbands. The middle–class ladies didn't work, and didn't have a life outside their homes. They dedicated all of their time, energies and passions into keeping their men happy and contented; and in return, were loved, pampered and protected from the harsh realities of life. Even though this idea of total subjection and passivity, wouldn't have a hope of success in today's society, the level of trust and commitment these two "Romantic Poets" apparently share, could be the ideal that all couples should aspire to. In sharp contrast to Browning idealistic and spiritual love poetry of the 1800s, Seamus Heaney's Twice Shy uses an altogether more contemporary and realistic style of prose too describe love in the 20th century. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Does obsession classify as a theme of self– torture? Obsession can be classified as self–torture because when someone obsesses over something they get this anxious and they get pulled because they can control the feeling, the thing is they choose not to suppress it and it can become addicting like a drug. In a biography about Poe the following is stated, "Poe's distinctive themes included madness, untimely death, and obsession. Given his troubled life, many critics have interpreted his deranged narrators, including the speaker in "The Raven", as reflections of the authors own tortured state of mind." (Malle, 130) The following information supports the claim that Poe's experiences and the psychological state contributes to the plot and themes of these bizarre pieces of ... There are innumerable ways you are able to love to another individual. Each line of the poem answers her original question, and then goes on to prove (with evidence) that her love is indeed real. Browning describes and expresses her distinct feelings very literally about the one she loves in this poem. She explains love by listing and describing many of the ways that she knows how to love and compares it to circumstances which the readers can relate to.
