The documentary follows Guy Martin as he attempts to break the world land speed record for motorbikes. It uses a variety of footage, including interviews and observational filming, to document Martin's preparation and record attempt. While focusing on Martin's singular pursuit of the record, the documentary structure is non-linear, moving between past and present. It aims to build suspense around Martin's future record attempt through the use of techniques like high key lighting and ambient sound of the motorbike.
4. NARRATIVE STRUCTURE
• The narrative structure in this documentary is non linear because the
documentary goes back in time and back to present so it does not
show a progression of time in chronological order.
• It is a circular structure because it starts in the present and ends in
the present.
• It is a singular structure because it focuses only on guy martin trying
to beat the speed record.
• The documentary has an open structure because the record attempt
is to happen in the future.
5. CAMERAWORK
• Establishing shots are used to inform the audience of the location
they are in.
• A handheld camera is used in observational footage to create a
realistic look and it is easier.
• In the interviews mid and mid closeup shots are used to allow the
audience to see the interviewee. Also the camera is at eye level which
helps the audience see the interviewee. The rule of thirds is used so
that the interviewee is positioned to one side and is off axis which
makes them look into the other two thirds, this is called looking
space.
6. MISE EN SCENE
• Some interviews happen in the location of
the record attempt (the salt plains). This
is because it is relevant as the interviewee
talks about his views on the attempt while
he is stood where it will take place and
where they are practicing.
• The lighting is mostly high key to give a
positive feel about the record attempt
which creates hope for the audience. Also
it allows the audience to clearly see
what's happening.
7. SOUND
• The diegetic sound used is the interview sound as this allows
the audience to hear that persons views. Also the ambient
sound allows the audience to hear the vehicle moving so the
audience can hear how it performs.
• The non-diegetic sound is the added music which is used to
emphasize a situation or atmosphere and to create an
emotional reaction from the audience such as tension.
8. EDITING
• Sound bridging is used when the interviewees dialogue carries
on over to observational or archive footage.
• Cutaways are used in interviews where observational or archive
footage is shown in between clips and the interviewees voice
sometimes carries over.
9. ARCHIVE MATERIAL
• Photos are shown of the original record attempt and the vehicle
used. This gives history about the record Guy Martin is
attempting to break.
10. GRAPHICS
• The opening title informs the audience of the programme.
• The date in the documentary is shown.
• Quotes are shown as well.
