About the presenter: Teresa Tiano is the Chair and Co-Founder of My Gut Feeling - Stomach Cancer Foundation of Canada, which is the volunteer-led, non-profit organization, founded in 2016, that is dedicated to the support of stomach cancer patients, survivors and caregivers through education, awareness and advocacy. Teresa has over 30 years of experience in the non-profit sector and has been advocating for patients since 1991 when her father was diagnosed with colon cancer. Teresa is also a 10/12 year stomach cancer survivor, 5-time cancer survivor and a Lynch Sydrome Survivor. Her advocacy work for patients includes being part of research teams, speaking engagements to raise awareness about stomach cancer, the world's 6th most common cancer and the world's 4th leading cause of cancer deaths. She currently sits on the the Patient Advocacy Committee of the Canadian Gastric Cancer Association (CGCA), is a Patient Advocate on the Ontario Hereditary Cancer Research Network, on the Patient Advocacy Team for STORMing Cancer, and a Patient Partner on the Indirect Impacts of Hereditary Cancer Syndrome Study. Don Husereau will provide an overview of current processes in Canada, and highlight their perceived (and real) shortcomings and what can be done to overcome these. He will highlight that some perceived weaknesses (such as review times) are not as bad as they appear while perceived strengths (such as stakeholder involvement) need considerable improvement. This is double the average time reported in comparable Organisation for Economic Development (OECD) countries. This webinar will highlight variations in drug listing time for new drugs across time, provinces, and type of drugs (oncology vs. non-oncology). It will also present the specific phases involved in moving a drug from approval stage to listing, and the time spent in each. This Conference Board of Canada analysis uses IQVIA’s Market Access Metrics Database (2012 to 2023), which tracks all new products and their indications through the Canadian access journey.

Colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in Canada, with approximately 24,100 Canadians diagnosed with the disease in 2023. The incidence of colorectal cancer has been declining in Canadians over 50 years of age, largely due to population-based screening programs. Recent evidence has shown, however, that rates have been increasing in adults younger than 50 years. Given that younger adults are typically classified as at low risk for colorectal cancer, this epidemiologic shift is cause for concern.
Individuals under the age of 50 now represent a significant number of colorectal cancer cases. The disease is often being diagnosed at a later stage, and tumour characteristics tend to be more lethal. As for what is accounting for the increasing trend, ongoing research efforts focus on environmental toxicities, lifestyle patterns, and the gut microbiome.
In this webinar, we will present an overview of the current evidence surrounding the rising rates of colorectal cancer in young adults and discuss the unique needs of this patient population, through screening, diagnosis, treatment, and survivorship. A young colorectal cancer patient will share his lived experience in managing this disease and the impact that cancer has had on himself and his family.

About this Webinar: This session will provide participants with an overview of what is involved in getting a new cancer treatment reviewed and approved in Canada. The webinar will feature representatives from 3Sixty Public Affairs, who will detail the key steps required to provide patient access to a new treatment option. The journey begins with a Health Canada review of safety, efficacy and quality. That is followed by comparative cost and effectiveness evaluations and the establishmentof a place in therapy by health technology assessment (HTA) agencies. After the HTA recommendations are issued, then the national pricing negotiation process takes place, followed by reimbursement decision-making at the jurisdictional level. During all that, new products also must pass through a national price review. Patients and stakeholders have some opportunities to provide input at various points in the process. Dani is the Manager of Programs and Partnerships at Young Adult Cancer Canada. Dani is an oncology social worker and young adult, colorectal cancer survivor. She has completed her Masters in Social Work with the Factor-Inwentash Faculty of Social Work at University of Toronto, as well as her Bachelor of Social Work and BA in English Literature with York University. Her experiences with the health care system and support of Young Adult Cancer Canada (YACC) led her to explore a career in psychosocial oncology, finding particular interest in illness narratives and systemic violence. Participation in lung cancer screening is lower in populations with the highest burden of lung cancer risk (through the social patterning of smoking behavior) and lowest levels of healthcare utilization (through care which is structurally inaccessible). This leads to a widening of health inequities. In this webinar, participants will learn about inequities across the lung cancer care continuum. They will also learn to understand the need to take an equity-oriented approach to lung cancer screening, and consider future directions for improving access to lung cancer screening in all eligible population groups.

About this Webinar: This session will provide participants with an overview of what is involved in getting a new cancer treatment reviewed and approved in Canada. The webinar will feature representatives from 3Sixty Public Affairs, who will detail the key steps required to provide patient access to a new treatment option. The journey begins with a Health Canada review of safety, efficacy and quality. That is followed by comparative cost and effectiveness evaluations and the establishmentof a place in therapy by health technology assessment (HTA) agencies. After the HTA recommendations are issued, then the national pricing negotiation process takes place, followed by reimbursement decision-making at the jurisdictional level. During all that, new products also must pass through a national price review. Patients and stakeholders have some opportunities to provide input at various points in the process. All that and more will be covered during the presentation. Dani is the Manager of Programs and Partnerships at Young Adult Cancer Canada. Dani is an oncology social worker and young adult, colorectal cancer survivor. She has completed her Masters in Social Work with the Factor-Inwentash Faculty of Social Work at University of Toronto, as well as her Bachelor of Social Work and BA in English Literature with York University. Her experiences with the health care system and support of Young Adult Cancer Canada (YACC) led her to explore a career in psychosocial oncology, finding particular interest in illness narratives and systemic violence. Participation in lung cancer screening is lower in populations with the highest burden of lung cancer risk (through the social patterning of smoking behavior) and lowest levels of healthcare utilization (through care which is structurally inaccessible). This leads to a widening of health inequities. In this webinar, participants will learn about inequities across the lung cancer care continuum. They will also learn to understand the need to take an equity-oriented approach to lung cancer screening, and consider future directions for improving access to lung cancer screening in all eligible population groups.

Flu Vaccine Alert in Bangalore Karnataka
As flu season approaches, health officials in Bangalore, Karnataka, are urging residents to get their flu vaccinations. The seasonal flu, while common, can lead to severe health complications, particularly for vulnerable populations such as young children, the elderly, and those with underlying health conditions.
Dr. Vidisha Kumari, a leading epidemiologist in Bangalore, emphasizes the importance of getting vaccinated. "The flu vaccine is our best defense against the influenza virus. It not only protects individuals but also helps prevent the spread of the virus in our communities," he says.
This year, the flu season is expected to coincide with a potential increase in other respiratory illnesses. The Karnataka Health Department has launched an awareness campaign highlighting the significance of flu vaccinations. Ethanol (CH3CH2OH), or beverage alcohol, is a two-carbon alcohol
that is rapidly distributed in the body and brain. Ethanol alters many
neurochemical systems and has rewarding and addictive properties. It
is the oldest recreational drug and likely contributes to more morbidity,
mortality, and public health costs than all illicit drugs combined. The
5th edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders
(DSM-5) integrates alcohol abuse and alcohol dependence into a single
disorder called alcohol use disorder (AUD), with mild, moderate,
and severe subclassifications (American Psychiatric Association, 2013).
In the DSM-5, all types of substance abuse and dependence have been
combined into a single substance use disorder (SUD) on a continuum
from mild to severe. A diagnosis of AUD requires that at least two of
the 11 DSM-5 behaviors be present within a 12-month period (mild
AUD: 2–3 criteria; moderate AUD: 4–5 criteria; severe AUD: 6–11 criteria).
The four main behavioral effects of AUD are impaired control over
drinking, negative social consequences, risky use, and altered physiological
effects (tolerance, withdrawal). This chapter presents an overview
of the prevalence and harmful consequences of AUD in the U.S.,
the systemic nature of the disease, neurocircuitry and stages of AUD,
comorbidities, fetal alcohol spectrum disorders, genetic risk factors, and
pharmacotherapies for AUD.

RESULTS: Overall life span (LS) was 2252.1±1742.5 days and cumulative 5-year survival (5YS) reached 73.2%, 10 years – 64.8%, 20 years – 42.5%. 513 LCP lived more than 5 years (LS=3124.6±1525.6 days), 148 LCP – more than 10 years (LS=5054.4±1504.1 days).199 LCP died because of LC (LS=562.7±374.5 days). 5YS of LCP after bi/lobectomies was significantly superior in comparison with LCP after pneumonectomies (78.1% vs.63.7%, P=0.00001 by log-rank test). AT significantly improved 5YS (66.3% vs. 34.8%) (P=0.00000 by log-rank test) only for LCP with N1-2. Cox modeling displayed that 5YS of LCP significantly depended on: phase transition (PT) early-invasive LC in terms of synergetics, PT N0—N12, cell ratio factors (ratio between cancer cells- CC and blood cells subpopulations), G1-3, histology, glucose, AT, blood cell circuit, prothrombin index, heparin tolerance, recalcification time (P=0.000-0.038). Neural networks, genetic algorithm selection and bootstrap simulation revealed relationships between 5YS and PT early-invasive LC (rank=1), PT N0—N12 (rank=2), thrombocytes/CC (3), erythrocytes/CC (4), eosinophils/CC (5), healthy cells/CC (6), lymphocytes/CC (7), segmented neutrophils/CC (8), stick neutrophils/CC (9), monocytes/CC (10); leucocytes/CC (11). Correct prediction of 5YS was 100% by neural networks computing (area under ROC curve=1.0; error=0.0).
CONCLUSIONS: 5YS of LCP after radical procedures significantly depended on: 1) PT early-invasive cancer; 2) PT N0--N12; 3) cell ratio factors; 4) blood cell circuit; 5) biochemical factors; 6) hemostasis system; 7) AT; 8) LC characteristics; 9) LC cell dynamics; 10) surgery type: lobectomy/pneumonectomy; 11) anthropometric data. Optimal diagnosis and treatment strategies for LC are: 1) screening and early detection of LC; 2) availability of experienced thoracic surgeons because of complexity of radical procedures; 3) aggressive en block surgery and adequate lymph node dissection for completeness; 4) precise prediction; 5) adjuvant chemoimmunoradiotherapy for LCP with unfavorable prognosis.
