Serve one‟s country with total loyalty
Many times, our life sticks around the crossroad, something which leads us in such a situation,
where one has to leave one important element and choose the other. It is such a stage of
skepticism which decides our entire future. Yuefei was left in a similar situation. On one hand, it
was his mother, Charlotte and his entire family and on the other hand, it was his motherland,
which was seeking his requirement. He mulled over the two deciphering situations, but could not
come to a conclusion (Juel, 1988). He told about his vision and confusion to me. He told that he
wanted to join the army but can‟t leave his mother and family.
Kennard, knew that she can only provide a solution to his problem by explaining him the
importance of family. She used a simple statement, “Family happens if and only if the nation is
there.” She asked him to join the army. She explained him that you aren‟t made to be a
businessman or lecturer. You are my son, the son of a lady who has always faced a number of
problems in life and fought wars with the society to live her life. Now, it is the time for Achilles
to serve the nation.
Achilles was convinced by his mother‟s idea and started preparing for leaving from the home. He
had to leave along with his friend Charlotte. The family was in an emotional upbringing.
Kennard couldn‟t sleep that night. Though she made Achilles feel that she is happy if he goes for
war, but she was a mother. She kept preparing for his son‟s departure with a continuous outflow
of tears. The child whom she had reaped from the very first day of his birth, was now going

away from her. She kept on meandering around, preparing one or the other item which may help
Achilles in the journey.
By the time she packed his belongings and prepared the food it was morning. She waked him up
and asked to get ready. The tears were in intensification, the heart was striven and the soul was
stricken.
By now, Charlotte was now at the door. He was all set, a child who was completely independent.
His parents died years before in the floods and he was left. He was grown by his uncle. But, now,
he was living all alone for over a year along with army people in their camp. He was happy and
cheerful.
Achilles, on the other hand was feeling weight in his heart. He looked at his mother who was
trying to hide her tears.
It was the time to bid a final goodbye. Achilles was leaving, moving out of the home. All of a
sudden, Kennard came running to him and hugged him. This time, he could not control her
emotions and burst into tears. The collocation of emotions was flagged up. Somehow, Kennard,
held control and engraved on Achilles back with a knife, “„serve one's country with total
loyalty”. Achilles withered in pain. But after this, Achilles left from his home.
The sight of the house kept on becoming more and more shrink and ultimately swept of. On
reaching the army camp after 2 days, Achilles was introduced to the Army chief by Charlotte
who had joined army a year back (Jones, 1991).
“The war is in its full swing. You may have to face the gun anytime. You never know when you
are dead. You do not know that you will be able to eat the next day meals or not. You do not

have any idea if you will ever go back home and meet your family. Do you still want to join the
army?”
“Sir, I am here to live my life for my motherland, to protect her, to die for her and to be with her.
I would be equally comfortable to sleep in the lap and to die under her feet. I am here to give
myself.”: Achilles replied in full swing.
“Every person feels the same initially. But, when one has to face the problems, most of them run
away. Today, you are saying big things, but, I am sure that in a week you will escape and would
never return back.”
Achilles was now withered with confidence. He turned and took out his shirt. His back was
wounded, The wounds were still fresh and blood was still coming out from some portions. When
the army chief looked over his back, he found a pattern. He went close and looked again and
found
“Serve one's country with total loyalty”
Engraved on his back.
He was muted, amused, bewildered. He apologized Achilles for questioning his dedication and
gave him the army suit. The dress, which was a pride for any person, the dress which let him
leave his home to serve his motherland, something which made his mother feel proud.”
Achilles, faced the war bravely and killed over 40 enemy soldiers. He was even offered bribe to
let the enemies invade the area but he had just one thing with him “Serve one's country with total
loyalty”. He died on facing a sudden attack by the enemy soldiers.

but these were accompanied by pride.
