Crocheting and Knitting
Although weaving is what we traditionally think of as the basic technique in creating fabric,
knitting and crocheting are additional ways to create a piece of material. We will be looking at the
practice of “yarn-bombing” as a way of engaging the environment with knitted and/or crocheted
textiles. Go around the art school and choose an area you would like to “bomb” and draw some
sketches/jot down ideas of what you would like to do. Keep in mind: time allotted for the
project; will the crochet or knit piece blend in/contrast, emphasize a certain section/exaggerate an
area; think of materials. Color and Texture will be a major part of this assignment, so really
consider these when planning your assignment.
I am dividing you into three groups for this project. As a group, you will all be
responsible for the development and presentation of your idea, as well as the project
itself. For class on Monday, April 8th, your group will be asked to discuss the following:
1)Which techniques do you plan on using and why?
2) What form will the project take? How do you plan to adress color, pattern, and
scale?
3)What is the relationship of your piece to your chosen site? The work should not be
topical, but integrated in some way. How does the work respond to it's context?
4) Are there any legal issues involved? You will need to research the legality of your
yarn bombing in your chosen site.
You must be prepared to answer these questions both VISUALLY and VERBALLY
through sketches, samples, and source imagery on a large board. (Foamcore or
matboard)
