1. Advanced Weaving – ARST 3710
Design and Weave a Collection of Fabric + Yardage
Part 1:
For this assignment, you are to design and weave a collection of 5-10 textiles that refer to or are inspired by your
favorite place. For example, your favorite place could be a room in a house, the beach, a forest, a library, your
grandmother’s house, etc. The more specific you can be with your favorite place, the more information and ideas
you will be able to draw from it. It is imperative that you investigate this place through photos, drawings,
paintings, material studies, and images. Try to get at what it is that makes this place so special to you, and
prepare a visual presentation on boards with supporting images and materials. What are the colors of the room or
textures in the room that make it so special? What memory or memories do you associate with this space? Is
there a particular aroma you sense? Is there an emotion attached to it? Write 5-10 words that describe this place
and present everything to class on Thursday, 3/22. We will talk about your warp, weft and structures based on
your ideas during your presentation.
Part 2:
After weaving samples for your collection, choose one sample and weave yardage of that sample. This piece will
have a new warp and measure at least 3 yards long and 27” wide. The structure, composition and design will be
up to you so sample wisely and be inventive.
For your final critique, you’ll show your 5-10 samples + yardage.
