Academic Council elections will take place on March 20th along with Student Union elections. The Academic Council assists with educational planning and protects academic standards. As a student representative, you would attend 6-7 monthly meetings to contribute opinions and represent students. To get involved, check the eligibility list, nominate yourself or a peer by March 12th, and vote on March 20th. This is a valuable opportunity to influence academics and standards at the institute.

1. Have your say on Academic Council - Nominate yourself for
election!
The following is being sent on behalf of the Director of Elections.
Elections for a male and female representative to sit on Academic council will take place on the same
day as the Students’ Union Elections on Wednesday 20th March 2013. Please see attached document
for details.
A. WHAT IS ACADEMIC COUNCIL?
All colleges have an Academic Council appointed by the Governing Body to:
a. assist in the planning, co-ordination, development and overseeing of the educational work of
the college;
b. and to protect, maintain and develop the academic standards of the courses and the activities
of the college.
The terms of reference for the Academic Council are extracted directly from the Regional Technical
Colleges Act (1992).
B. WHAT IS INVOLVED IN BEING A STUDENT REPRESENTATIVE ON ACADEMIC COUNCIL?
You will be expected to attend Academic Council meetings which take place at 1pm during term time
or give notice if you cannot attend. There are usually around 6 or 7 meetings each year. The
membership term runs from September 2013 to 30th June 2014. The Students’ Union President is
automatically a member of Academic Council and also attends. Meetings last usually between 1 to
2hrs. You can listen to discussions, raise items for consideration, contribute your opinion and
generally be a listening ear and a voice for the student body. One item recently approved by
Academic Council was an amendment to our Academic programme assessment policy and procedure
3AS06, allowing students to apply to retain their honours classification in certain specified

C. WHAT MUST YOU DO TO GET INVOLVED?
1. Check for your name on the list in C Block
Provisional lists of male and female students “eligible electors” are now displayed in the foyer of C
Block. Please consult the relevant list and confirm your name is on the list of eligible electors. If
your name is not there you will not be eligible to be a candidate for election or to nominate a
candidate for election. You have until Tuesday 5th March at noon to notify Margaret Davis in F Block if
your name is not listed. A final list of electors will then be posted on Wednesday 6th March.
2. Nominate yourself or a fellow student
Pick up a nomination form from Margaret Davis in F Block. Nomination forms must be returned to
Margaret Davis in F Block by the Tuesday 12th March at 12noon. You can nominate yourself or a
fellow student provided that the student you nominate indicates in writing that they agree to being
nominated. All nominations must be supported by another eligible elector who must sign the
nomination form.
3. Vote!
Voting will take place on the same day as the SU Elections, on Wednesday 20th March from 10am to
6pm in the Sports Hall in C Block. You will need to present your ITB student card in order to vote.
This is an invaluable opportunity to influence the academic standards of the courses and
the activities of ITB as well as a unique and important addition to your CV.
