2. Laura Mulvey states that there are 2 roles of a
female character in a narrative:
1. As an erotic object for the characters within the
narrative to view
2. As an erotic object for the spectators to view
3. Voyeuristic looking involves a controlling gaze.
The camera movements and directories are
purposefully located towards a sexual attraction of
the artist in order to sexualise them in a way that is
appealing to the audience.
Fetishist looking involves the substitution of a
fetish object or turning the represented figure itself
into a fetish so that it becomes reassuring rather
than dangerous. This builds up the physical beauty
of the object, transforming it into something
satisfying in itself. The erotic instinct is focused on
the look alone.
4. This music video
by Miley Cyrus
purposefully
sexualises Miley
as she is shown
with no clothes,
riding on a
wrecking ball
(purposefully
phallic) and
licking a hammer.
She is shown as a
sexual object
rather than a
human being.
5. This music video by
Rihanna is similar to
Miley Cyrus’ video as
they are both
portraying females as
sexualised. This links
to Laura Mulvey’s
theory as this attracts
the audience which
catches their interests
in her music video.
