1. What do we celebrate
on April 1st
?
What is this day called?
Why is it called like that?
What do people usually
do this day?
2. APRIL FOOL’S DAY
April fool’s day is celebrated on April 1st
every year. On this day people play jokes on
each other and a ‘victim’ of these jokes is
called April Fool. The day is marked by
pranks, hoaxes, and other practical jokes on
friends, enemies, neighbours, colleagues,
classmates, and family.
The aim is to embarrass the gullible -- by
sending them on fools' errands or by
playing mischief, or causing embarrassment
to them. This is done in the spirit of fun, and
nobody minds as long as it is April 1st
.
3. Think about…
Who began this tradition?
Who were the first people to celebrate
this day?
Where did it start?
Now, read the text and find the answer to
these questions.
4. ORIGIN
It is thought that this custom have started
in 16th
century in France. There are various
theories about it’s origin. The one
commonly accepted says that April Fool’s
Day is connected with changes in the
calendar. In 1582 King Charles IX adopted
the Gregorian calendar and from that
moment the beginning of the new year have
been celebrated on January 1st
not from
March 25th
to April 1st
as it was before.
Those who forgot about the new date or did
not accept it received invitations to
nonexistent parties or foolish jokes.
The reason for April Fool’s Day was that in
the medieval times the kings and queens
had jesters to make them laugh. On April 1st
jesters had a day off and the noble men had
to take their place.

5. Who were the jesters?
A Jester is a professional clown
employed to entertain a king or
nobleman in the Middle Ages. Also
referred to as a fool, buffoon or clown.
The Medieval jesters of the Middle
Ages can be compared to the circus
clowns of today.
6. JOKES
April Fool's practical jokes should not harm anyone, they are
just a good fun. The best jokes are the clever ones where
everyone laughs, especially the person who had the joke played on them.
Some examples:
* put food colouring in milk
* go with a couple of friends, stand near some busy street corner – stare and
point up at the sky. Watch the reactions of people around you!
* Draw funny eyebrows and moustache on someone's face while she/he is
asleep.
* Tape a little walky-talky on your pet or hide it somewhere near where it is laying. Walk
off to a safe distance where you can keep yourself hidden from others with the other
piece. As soon as another family member tries to pick up or pat on the back of your pet,
say in a gruff voice, "I hate you doing this to me." See them jump with fright and shock.
7. Let’s tell some jokes
Have a look at this cartoon. Do you
find it funny? If so, why?
Now think of a joke to share
with your classmates!
8. Pranks
Have a look at these pictures. What kind of pranks do they show?
Now think of the best prank you’ve ever pulled and tell the class.
10. Let’s write
First step, brainstorming.
-Think of possible origins for this tradition
-Maybe a child played a joke on someone?
-Some school kids trying to get revenge on a teacher?
-perhaps a jester wanted to make his king laugh?
-Think of reasons why this celebration takes place in April as
opposed to other months
-It is likely that people were sad after the cold winter
YOUR IDEAS????
11. 2ND
step
Let’s think of the setting. WHERE DOES YOUR LEGEND TAKE
PLACE?
-In the Middle Ages?
-In Prehistoric times?
-During the Discovery of America?
-Ice Age?
The setting will be important to narrate events &
describe characters.
