Two sources of radio waves (call them 1 and 2) are separated by a distance d along the a-axis in the plane, and emit sinusoidal waves of the same wavelength A and frequency f in the N (+y), S (-y), E (+x), and W (-x) directions. Suppose that we want to arrange the sources to broadcast a signal in the E direction, but not the W. Can this be accomplished? If so, how? In not, why? Solution both the sources are identicle and emit in all direction N,S,E,W. by introducing a path difference equal to half wave length the waves will have distructive interference and signal is destroyed but this happens in both the direction E nd W equally. Hence it is not possible to arrnge the sources such that we have signal only in E nd not in W, the only way to achieve this is to shield the source in W direction or put reflectors in W direction so that all W signal is reflected back to E.
