A LAN connects computer devices within the same building through network cards installed in each device. Switches are used to connect the network cards and route data, operating at a higher speed than hubs and knowing which devices are linked to each port. Routers join multiple LANs together, connecting two or more networks and operating at the network layer. The TCP/IP protocol allows different operating systems and networks to communicate through the reliable TCP layer and IP address system which identifies each connected computer.
