retention.

tapered crown form—full coverage

roots with parallel sides and
developmental grooves provide better
stability.

Crown-root ratio
higher the ratio—decreased stability.
1:1.5 considered satisfactory.

teeth should equal or exceed that of the
tooth or teeth being replaced.
Periodontal health
periodontal disease if present should
be treated before,definitive treatment is
begun.

Mobility
its magnitude and cause must be
evaluated.

Span length
distance between abutment teeth
affect feasibility of placing a FPD.
replacement of one to two teeth is
easily accomplished.
replacement of three teeth require
careful evaluation.

Axial alignment
the crowns of proposed abutment
must be sufficiently well aligned.
malalignment may require
orthodontic correction / devitalisation.

Arch form

Pulpal health
abutment teeth with poor pulpal
health should receive endodontic
treatment prior to tooth preparation.
Long-term abutment prognosis
removable prosthesis may be
advantageous,when,the ability of the
remaining supporting structures to
accept excessive occlusal forces is
questionable.

Alveolar ridge form
considerable loss of alveolar bone
may not allow the use of pontics of
normal size or their placement to best
support the lips and cheeks to restore
normal facial form.
Age of the patient
in mouth of adolescents fixed
prosthesis is usually contraindicated
due to incomplete eruption of the teeth
and large pulp chambers.

Phonetics
existence of large alveolar bone
defect may not allow pontics to help the
patient produce normal phonetics.
Psychological factors
most patient accept fixed partial
dentures more normally than
removable partial dentures.
Operators skill

conclusion
 It must be realized that all these complex
factors cannot be readily defined or
positioned in order of significance.
 Relative importance changes with individual
mouth,each new patient presents new
problems and new difficulties to the novice.
 Operator should develop and possess the
skill to design a prosthesis depending upon
its classification and configuration.
