Background of bamboo in China
China is the Kingdom of Bamboo.
In China, bamboo forest area is
more than 6 million ha, 42% of the
entire world, with more than 500
bamboo species.
7.75 million people work for
bamboo forestry sector, shared
more than 50% of global market.
More than 2000 bamboo products
developed in China, such as
handicrafts, music instruments ,
mat, furniture, bamboo charcoal,
pulp and paper, bamboo fiber,
clothes and etc..

Methodology for CCER bamboo afforestation
carbon projects
• Application conditions :
– 1.The proposed project land does not fall into
wetland category.
– 2.Soil disturbance contribution of the afforestation
project activities does not exceed more than 10% of
area of proposed eligible project land.
– 3.The proposed project land is suitable for bamboo
planting. The height of bamboo species shall reach
above 2 meter, the diameter of breast height (DBH)
shall reach above 2 cm, land area shall be at least
0.067ha, and the canopy density shall reach 20%.
16. 16
Methodology for CCER bamboo afforestation
carbon projects
• Application conditions :
– 4.Burn-off method (controlled burning ) cannot use in
the forest site clearances . And in order to conserve
the water, soil and biodiversity, overall site
preparation cannot be applied.
– 5.Original scattered trees in the project sites cannot
be cut during the project activities.
18. 18
Methodology for CCER bamboo forest
management carbon projects
• Application conditions :
– The proposed project land shall be covered by bamboo forest.
The canopy cover of the forest shall be higher than 20 %;
continuous distribution area ≥ 0.067 ha.; mature height of
bamboo shall exceed 2 m; and DBH of a mature bamboo shall
more than 2 cm.
– This methodology is not applicable to mixture forest of
bamboo and tree species. The canopy cover of tree species in
the forest shall be less than 20 %.
– The proposed project land should not be wetland and should
not contain organic soils.
– The proposed project activities will not violate relevant laws,
regulations and applicable technical standards of forest
management of the state and local governments.
19. 19
Methodology for CCER bamboo forest
management carbon projects
• Application conditions :
– Only Harvest bamboo stems and branches during management
activities. Litter collection is not allowed on project sites.
– Loosing soil and weeds control shall follow the contour direction,
and no deep tillage used in the soil management of project
forests.
– Fertilization shall be in line or in spot and soil shall be tightly
covered after fertilizing.
– One or more of scientific management technical measures of
bamboo forest management listed in Appendix 1 shall be applied.
– The project should not start before January 1, 2013.
20. 20
Methodology for CCER bamboo forest
management carbon projects
• Forest management activities :
– Promote bamboo shoots generate
– Improve bamboo forest structure
– Maintain bamboo forest health
– Renew bamboo species and variety
– Stabilize soil carbon pool

3.Prospect on bamboo forest carbon
There are multi-benefits from bamboo carbon projects , such
as enhancement income for local farmers & improvement of
capacity building, community engagement, biodiversity
conservation, environment improvement, climate change
awareness arising, promoting social harmony
The prospect on bamboo forest carbon is very bright
There are potential to develop bamboo carbon projects in
China, Southeast Asia, South Asia, Africa and South America.
There are potential to develop bamboo forest management
carbon projects in China
There are more potential to develop bamboo afforestation
carbon projects in Africa. More land resources, low labor cost,
and multi-benefits.
(1)The land for implementing the project should be covered by bamboo forests. The canopy cover of the forest should be higher than 20 %, continuous distribution area ≥ 0.0667 ha, The mature height of bamboo’s should exceed 2 m, and the diameter of breast height (DBH) of a mature bamboo should be larger than 2 cm. The methodology is not applicable to mixtures of bamboo and trees. The canopy coverage of trees in the forest should be less than 20 %.
(2)Project area does not contain wetlands or organic soils.
(3)Project activities will not violate forest management laws, regulations and applicable mandatory technical standards of the state and local governments.
(4)Harvesting activities in the project are restricted to the removal of bamboo stems and shoots. Litter raking is not allowed on project sites.
(5) Soil banded hoeing and weeding must occur in the contour direction, and no deep tillage used in the soil management of project forests.
(6) Fertilization is using banded furrow and spot fertilization and tightly covering with soil after fertilizing.
(6)The project should adopt one or more of scientific management technical measures of bamboo forests listed in Appendix 1.
(7)The project should not start before January 1, 2013.
