Phillip has had a fluctuating work life since graduating high school. He attended college for a year to study game development but had to quit due to loans. He then held a series of jobs he disliked, including telemarketer and various retail positions, to save money. The pay at these jobs was low, usually starting at $10 per hour with small raises. During his last job at Amazon, he learned about coding bootcamps but could not afford their high costs. He then discovered IC Stars at a job fair and decided to enroll in their program.
2. Intro
Ever since I graduated from highschool my work life has been in a constant flux.
My first goal was to attend college for game development at I.a.d.t which I did for
a year before school loans prevented me from going further. Shortly after I
decided I would learn game development on my own and find a job to hold me off
until my mission was complete. Little did I know, one job would spiral into a list of
many, with the two things in common. I hated working there, and they weren’t
helping me change my life for the better. So after I broke my car and had to quit
my last job a couple of months ago, I decided it was time for a change.
3. The first job I ever had.
The first job I ever had was a telemarketer. I only
stayed there for two weeks! The funny part
about it is I was actually pretty good at it. I was
getting about 2 sales a day which was awesome
for my first week. The pay was $10 a hr 8hrs a
day. You had to speak to a continuous stream
of people with with the maximum of a 1 min
pause in between. That one minute was a
blessing when it came around. The reason I
ultimately quit was because of my morality. I felt
like I was making people’s lives worse by trying
to persuade them to buy something they didn’t
need. That’s not who I am, so I quit.
4. The average pay of my past jobs
The average pay of my last jobs
have been anything but impressive.
They usually started at $10 an hr
with a expected raise every six
months of about 50 cents. This
was a major frustration for me
because often times just because a
job pays low it works you as if the
opposite is true.
5. List of jobs I’ve worked at.
● Orc Protel
● Sears
● Walmart
● St sabina
● Toys R US
● Sherwin Williams
● Scr Medical Transportation
● Amazon
6. My low wage experience
My low wage experience has been a story. While not all bad I would sum up the
experience as undesirable. Being at a minimum wage job to me was similar to
riding a carousel of mediocrity. It feels as if you’re trapped in a hall of mirrors
forced to review the result of your unwise decisions. Though I will say I’ve
learned many things from minimum wage jobs also. My people skills increased
exponentially and I gained wisdom on how the real world work. Most importantly it
taught me to never give up even though the position you’re in is unfavorable.
Because as long as you keep moving forward, you can change the position you’re
in.
7. Why I chose i.c stars
During my last job at amazon I learned about i.t bootcamps. They would pop up all
over the internet. Pushing how amazing the pay was for a web dev in every ad.
This got me curious. I started researching these bootcamps and they sounded
really interesting. The only problem with these programs was the price. Most were
anywhere between 10-20k and needless to say, I don’t have that kind of money. So
i began taking courses online to learn i.t on my own. However self learning can be
a very slow process and it was taking me a while to get where i wanted to be. One
day i attended a job fair and I saw the i.c stars booth. I started my talk with Jerry
and the rest is history.
