Facebook is a social media website that is quickly becoming one of the most powerful marketing tools on Earth. It is a tool for viewing, collaborating, and interacting with hundreds of millions of people on every continent on Earth. Yes, even antarctica.
Such a small package has so much potential, so many tools bundled together make it a one stop shop that any savvy user can utilize to work towards any number of goals.
Facebook allows us to post information that can be accessed on two tiers, one tier allows any one to see what we put out there, for example interviewers could see one set of information while our supervisors could see another. This lets us more closely control a message. We can also use the website to post information about staffing needs and changes, this coupled with our two tiers system lets current employees see what projects need additional staffing. For long term goals or ongoing community oriented activities such as fundraisers, FB allows us to post updates on how much money we have raised, who has raised the most etc, providing a competitive aspect and improving our sense of team. And finally, while certainly not the primary method of communication, FB coupled with text messaging and phone calls can help us reach more of our employees in a more timely manner when we have important time sensitive information. Facebook updates are sent as SMS messages meaning any employee with a smart phone can receive information we send them instantly. No more “hoping” our interviewers check their voicemails before they come in to work.
Facebook can help us foster a sense of community by providing a location that is consistantly “present” in their lives. This could be especially useful for our virtual callers in that it can give them a place to talk to and interact with other employees in a positive atmosphere. It can help our employees keep in touch with one another. The “NEWS” page allows interviewers to view and share funny or interesting anecdotes in a way that we can view, edit, and authorize.
Web presence is an increasingly important concept. How much “presence” does our center have in our community. Right now the answer is ZERO, and just as employers are increasingly using social media to vet prospective employees, future employees are using social media to check out their prospective employers. A smart, interesting, and friendly facebook page will help us promote ourselves as an excellent place to work.
Nearly half of all Americans have a facebook page. Facebook has nearly 1billion users. In a recent poll of college students asking “what is your favorite thing/activity.” Facebook was tied for second place with beer. Facebook shows incredible growth increasing its user base by nearly 900%. This means that we are likely to find any current or prospective employee on facebook, and they are likely to find us. In terms of it’s attactiveness, It’s massive reach is only matched by it’s cost, which is zero. Nothing. Facebook is free both for us, and for our employees. No liscensing or account fees. No contracts.
So, what do we have to do to get one? Pay a programmer or web developer thousands of dollars to build one? No. Because of it’s easy to use interface and the fact that the site allows HTML editing, any one with even a minimal amount of familiarity with HTML can create a custom designed facebook page. So far it supports the following features but there’s room to add virtually any feature or interface we want, for no additional cost.
Our landing page is the first thing someone sees when they search for us on facebook. It contains updates, notes, communications, polls, pictures, and whatever else we want them to see. It is the main hub that connects the rest of the site together.
Our landing page has contact information, employment information, our location including a map. This page also has a copy of our application for employment which can be printed out and brought in, or emailed directly to our HR Rep.
The Calendar provides information on upcoming events, it can show all the neat things our fun committee has planned as well as scheduled center closings, lists for the carry-ins we host. Or any other additional information we want.
The drop box is a way for employees to give send us information that we request. For example if we want ideas or opinions, we can put out a note asking for them, and our employees can respond in a way that allows us and only us to see.
The skills page gives us the opportunity to post training videos, or information to allow our employees access to skill improving information whenever they want. If they want to view pat responses, they can at any time.
This function allows us to take a vote on various questions. For example during our last visit from Dan Gass, we earned a very large amount of money through our commitment to productivity and quality. This would allow us a quicker way to gather information on how we could have spent that money.
Facebook is free, it’s easy to use, and it’s already being used by hundreds of millions of people around the country. Facebook is rich with applications that could allow us to improve and advertise our image, promote our center as a place to work, interact with and foster a sense of community, and motivate and hopefully help retain our current employees.
