1. BODY TISSUES
Epithelial tissue
Epithelial tissue covers the whole surface of the body. It is made up of cells closely packed and ranged in
one or more layers, with almost no intercellular spaces. This tissue is specialised to form the covering or
lining of all internal and external body surfaces.
Types of Epithelial Tissue
Epithelial tissue which is only one cell thick is known as simple epithelium.
If it is two or more cells thick such as the skin, it is known as stratified epithelium.
Simple epithelium
can be subdivided as:
Squamous epithelium
Cubic Epithelium
Prismatic epithelium
Transitional Epithelium
Glandular epithelium
Conjunctive tissue
characterized by filling in the intracellular spaces of the body and the important interface between the
other tissues, giving them support and assembly.
Morphologically, shows great amount of extracellular material (matrix) consisting of nonstructural an
aside, called structural amorphous substance.
can be subdivided as:
2. Loose Tissue
Dense Tissue
Blood Tissue
Adipose Tissue
Cartilaginous Tissue
Bone Tissue
Muscle tissue
Constitutes the muscles and is related to the mechanism of locomotion and the process of moving
substances inside the body.
- Smooth Muscle : necessarily with involuntary contraction, independent of the will of the individual.
- Skeletal muscle voluntary contraction, at the discretion of the individual.
- Muscle striated cardiac involuntary contraction.
Nervous Tissue
It is sensitive to various stimuli originating from outside or inside the body. When stimulated, the tissue
becomes capable of conducting nerve impulses quickly and sometimes for relatively long distances.
