3. Inspection
The change in performance of a structure should be detected through inspection.
The inspection is classified as:
Initial inspection
Routine inspection
Regular inspection
Detailed inspection
Extraordinary inspection

4. Deterioration & Evaluation of
Performance of structure
 Deterioration of the structure should be determined on the basis of the
inspection results, design and construction records.
 Appropriate models are needed to be able to estimate the deterioration rate.
 The performance of the structure is then evaluated based on the estimated
level and rate of deterioration.

6. Overhead Water Tank in the State of
Uttar Pradesh
The state government of Uttar
Pradesh had launched the safe
drinking water project for rural
population living in remote areas.
The job of implementation of the
scheme was given to the
corporation “JAL NIGAM” which
deals with the public water
management in the state.
However the project was a failure.

7. Reasons for failure
• The failure of the water tanks can thus be attributed to poor quality of concrete in terms
of durability. The tanks surveyed for damage being in rural areas where it is difficult to
maintain the quality of concrete
• Lack of quality control has caused minor cracks in the water tanks, which lead to the
leakage and deterioration of concrete.
• The reasons of failure thus are due to the improper selection of material, mix, placement,
compaction, leaking formwork temperature control, curing leading to honeycombed and
porous concrete.

8. Nehru Memorial College of K.V.G.
Group of Institutions at Mangalore
o Nehru Memorial College of Sri Kurunji Venkatramana Gowda (KVG) Group of
Institutions is located at Sullia near Mangalore, a costal city in the State of
Karnataka.
o It was established in the year 1967. This 40 year old Institution consists of
framed structures of G+1 and G+2 storied of different blocks which
experienced severe water leakages and environmental distress leading to
cracking, spalling and deterioration of the structural members.

9. Distress Observed
Since the building was very old and
located in a marine climate, the water
leakages and reinforcement corrosion were
major issues. There were leakages in the roof
and water seepage through the external walls
There were some cracks in the masonry
walls. At those locations the plastering was
chipped of and cutting of V-grooves were
made along the length of the crack by
chiselling. A wire mesh was fixed along the
cracks after which the cracks were repaired
with medium structural grade repair mortar.

10. External Wall Plastering and
Protective Coating
All the external wall plaster
were loosened and debonded from
the masonry surface for which
plastering was chipped out and
replastering was done. It was
finished with cement mortar
admixed with polymer modified
mortar and finally protected with
an elastomeric acrylic coating.
