The song is about growing older but still enjoying techno music and parties. It describes attending a costume party where the singer initially feels out of place in his suit amidst more casual costumes. However, as the party goes on and lasers and lights fill his mind, he realizes he has become a techno fan after all and doesn't want the party to end. The music video shows the band playing live at a costume party, with the singer appearing awkward at first but coming to enjoy himself as the song's chorus kicks in.

Techno fan
1. "Techno Fan"
East London's not a bomb site
It is a treasure chest
We use our penguin costumes
More than our evening dress
She said I should come over
Though the music's not my type
Don't you know I'd chop a limb off
Just to have a good time
Shut up and move with me, move with me, or, or get out of my face
I didn't queue for an hour to leave straight away
Shut up and stay with me, stay with me, or, or let go of my hand
The lasers fill our minds with empty plans
I never knew I was a techno fan
This is not a weird weekend
It's an angry wormhole
I'm talking like a city boy
And drinking with a northern soul
She said I should come over
Though it's carnage at times
It still seems I'd chop a limb off
Before I put up a fight
Shut up and move with me, move with me, or, or get out of my face
I didn't queue for an hour to leave straight away
Shut up and stay with me, stay with me, or, or let go of my hand
The lasers fill our minds with empty plans
I never knew I was a techno
We are the 1980s
We are the Detroit lights
And I never wanna, I never wanna see this stop
I'm in debt to you
But don't feed me plant food
Shut up and move with me, move with me, or, or get out of my face
I didn't spend 20 sheets and not cut a shape
Shut up and stay with me, stay with me, or, or let go of my hand
The lasers fill our minds with empty plans
I never knew I was a techno fan
I never knew I was a techno fan
I never knew I was a techno fan
Analysis
The music video starts with an extreme close up of Murph playing the keyboard
this is synchronous to the sound, this shot is relevant because it shows us
someone is playing the keyboard. The next shot is a long shot this is the first time
we see the full band in this music video. When the vocals start the camera cuts
and we see the lead singer to what it looks like to be a costume party this links to
the lyrics “She said I should come over though the music's not my
2. type” I think this relates to a teen party which he is not really fond
of because of the type of music that particular group listens to but
he goes to it anyway because he likes the girl that has invited him
and he just enjoys having a good time and partying “I‟d chop a limb
off just to have a good time”
The narrative of this music video is about growing older and still like
partying and having a good time this is conveyed through lyrics “we
use our penguin costumes more than our evening dress” the
„penguin costume‟ being a metaphor for casual wear. “The lasers fill
out minds with empty plans” this could insinuate that the lasers
(which you would associate with techno musicparties) make his
mind blank stopping him from having any other plans, other than
the party. Clearly Murph doesn‟t want to leave the party and is
having such a good time, we know this by the way he sings “I never
wanna see this stop” and “I‟m in debt to you” meaning that he is
having such a good time, that he owes the personal responsible for
it. The line after which reads “But don‟t feed me plant food” could
represent drugs in the song, which obviously, he doesn‟t want to
try. The final lines of the song sing “I never knew I was a techno
fan”, this could mean that he didn‟t really see himself as a techno
fan, but after the party, he has had a change of heart towards the
bouncy music.
When the song starts, Murph seems to be all sophisticated with his
suit, and when the camera cuts to the party, he seems to be the
odd one out and not enjoying himself. But as soon as it comes to
the chorus, lights flicker and he appears to have funky glasses on
which could portray that he is starting to enjoy the music/party.
The band plays live in the video, which is expected of the indie pop
genre. The typical instruments like drums, guitar, base and
keyboard are all included in the song.
The mise en scene is represented through out the music video, the
lighting in mainly low key to highlight the drollness of growing up
and losing the inner child within you, this is contrasted by the bright
spotlights and lasers which represent the fun teen that he thinks is
within himself. The video is set at a party it seems to be a fancy
dress party because all of the teenagers are dressed in provocative
costumes or they are hardly wearing anything at all. In contrast to
this Murph is wearing his suit he looks out of place and really
awkward it‟s as almost as like he is not meant to be there or as if
he doesn‟t fit in with the rest of the party goers. This links to the
narrative of the music video as he sings, “we use our penguin
costumes more than our evening dress” the penguin costume being
his fancy dress outfit and the suit being his evening wear.
3. Audience
The audience for the song “Techno Fan” by The Wombats is aimed
towards a particular set of people. This being teenagers from the
age of 15 to 19. The Wombats aren‟t really a popular band. I
wouldn‟t say that the band is steered towards a particular gender; I
think that their music is aimed towards both male and females. I
definitely feel that their music is primarily targeting teenagers due
to the topics of most of their songs (love) – although this is rather
stereotypical – teenagers and love songs. Seen as though the music
is upbeat, I couldn‟t see anyone of the older generation listening to
The Wombats music. In my opinion, I feel that this is a negotiated
reading because the producers have an intended meaning behind
the text and media, but some parts of the song could be
represented differently to other people.
