Unit 11 Task 3
Analysis of Sports Performance
P5 Criteria Only
Unit 11 - Task 3 - P5
Explain the purpose and resources
required for analysing different levels
of sporting performance.
Pages 22-26 of the Electronic Text
Book will be very useful.
Task Context
• You are creating a resource for future coaches based
on your experiences in Unit 11 tasks 1 and 2.
• You need to choose two of the performer levels below
for you whole task to be based on.
– Foundation
– Participation
– Performance
– Elite
• You do not need to complete a comparison just explain
in detail each of the following factors.
• This resource should be able to support future coaches
start the work you have completed so far.
Talent ID
Level of Sports Performance Detailed explanation of purpose (‘why’ and ‘how’)
Elite This is something a lot of top level clubs in all sports
will do, and take a lot of time and care doing. They do it
by going out to smaller teams looking to potential new/
young talent that they would want to have in their club.
This is something international coaches do as well, go
to league matches to watch their players to see who is
playing in good form and who should play for them in
the next international match.
Participation Due to the level of which they play, there wont be as
much testing, they might get them to attend a few
training sessions or play a game, to see how they feel
about it, and see if they will fit in with the team
without causing too many issues, disrupting the team
cohesion as being a smaller club they cannot afford to
have people falling/ dropping out. A coach or chairman
would watch a potential player play, and persuade
them to join their club any way possible.
Monitoring current fitness levels
Level of Sports Performance Detailed explanation of purpose (‘why’ and ‘how’)
Elite Top flight teams, and international team will have GPS
tracker on the back of their shirts, whilst they are playing to
measure things from distance covered, to the average speed
in which a player is running, this can be used to see when a
player has fatigued, as their speed would have dropped, as
there is normative data which has been previously been
collected for them to compare it too. During training they
would also have a heart rate monitor taped to their chest to
record that. This technology during training and games then
helps the coaches make tactical decisions.
Participation At this level they would not have the resources to do much
in the way of monitoring fitness levels, the most they would
be able to do, would be to do a number of different tests
then to repeat them very 4 weeks. However being at
participation level means that there are other priorities in
life, such as work and family which means that you might
not be able to attend many training sessions.
Identifying strengths/areas for
improvement
Level of Sports Performance Detailed explanation of purpose (‘why’ and ‘how’)
Elite They will have various coaches, who would all be responsible
for a certain area, e.g. skills coach. Their job will be to meet
regularly with the other coaches to discuss player’s
performances to identify if there are any players who need to
improve in a certain area, e.g. a prop needing to improve
their cardiovascular fitness. If this was the case they would
work with that coach to improve on factor until they reached
the required level.
Participation In smaller clubs, the areas for improvement would be much
bigger than though of an elite performer, such as improving
their ability to catch a high ball under pressure, testing this
will simply be to kick a ball, and get them to catch it when
unopposed. Do this till they are comfortable, then add a
defender who will be coming towards then, but not flat out,
again do it for a number of times, then finally when they are
improving add a second defender in, or get the defender to
speed up the kick chase, given the receiver less time.
Performance assessment
Level of Sports Performance Detailed explanation of purpose (‘why’ and ‘how’)
Elite Assessing performance is straight forward and simple
to do, which can be done as often as you like, a person
playing of an elite level should be doing this after every
match, even if they were on for 5 minutes. They should
first watch the game as a whole, then they should
watch it again, breaking it down, and making notes as
they go along. Once they’ve done this they should keep
hold of the notes they made and keep them in a file.
Participation at this level it is difficult as you may not have the
resources available to video games and then watch
them afterwards. So the only way they could assess
their performance would be by getting feedback of
other people who were watching or playing. If they’re
lucky, have someone to video it.
Recovery after injury
Level of Sports Performance Detailed explanation of purpose (‘why’ and ‘how’)
Elite It is important to monitor players who are injured
throughout their recovery from injury, they would have
people to monitor, test and treat them regularly to get
them back to full fitness as quickly as possible.
Participation The only why they could get the right level of
treatment would be to do it outside of the club, NHS,
and to spend their own money, and then slowly
increase the amount of training they do, doing it until it
feels uncomfortable.
Assessment of health status
Level of Sports Performance Detailed explanation of purpose (‘why’ and ‘how’)
Elite monitoring and testing them, doing a mixture of field
and lab based tests, such as using the facilities of the
Institute of Sport, Exercise and Health, and they will use
a lot of technology again as well, just like they do when
monitoring fitness levels. Because of what you would
be testing, and the conditions and facilities you have to
do it in.
Participation Definition of health is ‘being free of injury, illness or
disease’. So people of a participation level may not do
much in the way of assessing their health, and may just
go off that definition. You may do some simple tests,
such as measuring heart rate and blood pressure and
BMI.
Squad selection
Level of Sports Performance Detailed explanation of purpose (‘why’ and ‘how’)
Elite The selection would be based on those who have been
training hard on the field, putting the effort in the gym
and who have been playing well consistently. The
selection will be made by the coaches, and they will
pick the squad they feel will have the best chance of
winning the game.
Participation There might not be a lot of depth in numbers in the
squad so the squad selection will just be based on
those who are available, not just those who have been
at training that week.
Goal setting
Level of Sports Performance Detailed explanation of purpose (‘why’ and ‘how’)
Elite Linked in with the areas for improvement, which would
already be identified. When thinking about goal setting
you have to make sure that: it is Specific to the sport
and position; that it is Measurable, measuring the
weights in Kg; make sure it’s Achievable/Agreed upon;
Relevant training; and then think about a Time period
which would be suitable. These are known as SMART
targets.
Participation As they have no data to go by them the goals will be set
by themselves and they would be whatever they feel
they need to improve on, e.g. cardiovascular fitness.
However being only participation level, sport is a
hobby so lowered on their list of priorities, as work and
family life can sometimes have to take priority as that’s
where they are getting their income from.
Human
Level of Sports Performance Detailed explanation of resources (‘why’ and ‘what’)
Elite Human resources are every important to elite clubs as
they need people to manage the team, organize the
team, look after them, and generally be there in case
something needs doing, such as managing a players
injury recovery, helping them recover as quick as
possible.
Participation Participation clubs will have very little in the way of
human resources, and those they do have would be
getting little money for helping out, such as cooking
players meals, or even doing coaching in the age groups
as a lot of them would only be doing it as they have a
child playing in that team.
Facilities
Level of Sports Performance Detailed explanation of resources (‘why’ and ‘what’)
Elite They would have top of the range facilities, an example
would be the new Manchester City FC £200million
training complex expanding over 80 acres. 16 pitches,
7,000 capacity arena for youth teams. With good
facilities it will then mean getting in good equipment.
Participation Most clubs will have 2 or 3 pitches, which are
sometimes even accessible to the public making them
liable to being littered, causing health and safety risks
to the players. In poor weather conditions the pitches
can become badly damaged forcing the team to cancel
games.
Time
Level of Sports Performance Detailed explanation of resources (‘why’ and ‘what’)
Elite Time for a elite athlete in a elite club wont be short, as
the athlete wouldn’t have as many other factors to
worry about, such as work, as a lot of them would be
employed to play sport. Time for recovery from unjury
wouldn’t be as long as it would be for a participation
athlete as they would have professional medical staff
on hand with state of the art equipment.
Participation Time for a participation athlete as to be balance out
with other factors such as with family and work. Time
will be needed for a number of different purposes,
such as: recovery from injury; monitoring fitnesses
levels and the rest of the purposes.
Equipment
Level of Sports Performance Detailed explanation of resources (‘why’ and ‘what’)
Elite When a team new facilities, an example would be the
new Manchester City FC £200million training complex
they would make sure they have brand new top of the
range equipment for both the athletes and the
coaching and medical staff, to give the team the best
chance of success, as money is no object for them.
Participation This not having a lot of facilities they will not have the
room for a lot of equipment, then there is the question
of having the funds for them. Then you would have to
think about training people to use it equipment safely.
Financial
Level of Sports Performance Detailed explanation of resources (‘why’ and ‘what’)
Elite Finance is not a issue for them as they get income
through sponsorship, ticket sales and then competition
prize money, which means they can spend mass
amounts in any way they feel its fit.
Participation May receive some money from sponsorship, but the
money may not even be enough to cover simple
expense's such as coach hire or cost of providing
players meals. However they would also get income
through players subs money.
Scientific support and equipment
Level of Sports Performance Detailed explanation of resources (‘why’ and ‘what’)
Elite They will have the equipment and help available to
them for whenever they need it, in their facilities.
Participation At this level participation athletes and clubs wouldn’t
have the access to use this sort of equipment and get
that kind of help. Unless they go out of their way to
find the equipment and finance it themselves.
Safety
Level of Sports Performance Detailed explanation of resources (‘why’ and ‘what’)
Elite They will be trained to use the equipment safely and
will have trainers will them when using it to aid and
support them whilst using the equipment.
Participation They will not have the equipment available to them for
whenever they want. So they will have to go
somewhere else to be trained to use the equipment
safely and will have trainers will them when using it to
aid and support them whilst using the equipment.
