2. Just when we think we have seen
it all, yet another celebrity will
make a ridiculous comment, or
strike an offensive pose, or do
some crazy antic...which is
exactly why people gobble all
those celebrity magazines like
they are nourishment for their
soul.
3. Sceptics will scoff and
say people are wasting
their time and killing
their brain cells by
reading such trash.
Well, what if all those
gossip readers were
benefiting from reading
these magazines?
Let us show you
how...
4. Untimely Death
Kurt Gobain:
A talented yet troubled grunge performer, Kurt
Cobain became a rock legend in the 1990s with his
band, Nirvana. Kurt's life was riddled with chronic
drug use and overdose.
5. *Grunge: a type of rock music and a fashion for
untidy clothes, popular in the early 1990s.
*Riddled: full of something unwanted.
Several attempts at rehabilitation and counselling
proved useless. He committed suicide at his Seattle
home in 1994. He was just 27 years old.
6. Infidelity
Demi Moore And Ashton Kutcher:
Ashton Kutcher and Demi Moore called it quits in
2013, after an infidelity accusation which neither
addressed directly.
7. After six years of marriage, Demi finally kicked
him to the curb when she found out he had had a
tryst with another woman.
8. Many people still believe this was a rumour, and
though their age difference was what caused the
split. Demi was 41 and Ashton was 25 when they
met!
9. *Call it quits: to stop doing something.
*Kick (someone) to the curb: (informal) reject or
cast aside.
*Curb: (used in the U.S in this context) a raised
edge along the side of a street, often forming part
of a path for people to walk on.
10. *Tryst: a meeting between two people who are
having a romantic relationship, especially a secret
one.
*Split: (in this context) to end a relationship.
11. Meltdowns
Britney Spears:
Once upon a time she was the best-selling teenage
artist. She was called the ‘Princess of Pop’.
Countless personal issues (her favourite aunt dying,
a very un-amicable divorce and a nasty custody
battle) saw her in rehab time and time again.
12. Needless to say, she lost custody of her children
(2007).
An interview conducted
by OK magazine, just
weeks before Britney
lost custody.
Her son Sean was 2-
years-old and Jayden
was 1.
13. That seemed to be the straw that broke the
camel’s back, as she soon shaved her head in full
view of the paparazzi.
14. However, she released an album while her
struggles were ongoing) which was critically
acclaimed.
She seems to be in a good place now, though.
15. She has custody of her sons again.
She has also just released her 20th fragrance under
the brand Elizabeth Arden, making it a total of 24
fragrances released until January 2018.
16. *Amicable: relating to an agreement or decision
that is achieved without people arguing or being
unpleasant.
*Custody: the legal right or duty to care for
someone or something, especially a child after its
parents have separated or died.
17. *The straw that broke the camel’s back:
(idiom) a series of irritating occurrences that
eventually lead to one final thing that causes a
person to lose their patience or to react in a strong
way.
*Paparazzi: the photographers who follow famous
people everywhere they go in order to take
photographs of them for newspapers and
magazines.
18. *Critical acclaim: to be looked upon very
favourably by the critics of any given industry.
- Here’s a small exercise for you.
Pick up a magazine (or any reading material) and
find words/phrases you don’t know. Look up the
meanings and try to make sentences using them.
