The Man Who Murdered Himself
At the 1994 annual awards dinner (0) .…….. by the American Association for Forensic
Science (AAFS), President Don Harper Mills astounded his audience in San Diego with the
legal complications of a bizarre death. Here is the story.
On 23 March 1994, the medical examiner (1) …..….. the body of Ronald Opus and concluded
that he had died from a gun wound to the head. The man had jumped off the top of a ten- (2)

As he fell past the ninth floor, his life was interrupted by a gun blast through a window, which
killed him instantly. (4) …..….. the person who fired the gun nor the dead man was (5)
…..….. that a safety net had been erected at the eight floor level to protect some window
cleaners and that Opus would not have been able to complete his suicide attempt anyway (6)

Normally, a person who sets out to commit suicide ultimately (7) …..….., even though the

The room on the ninth floor from where the shotgun blast emanated was occupied by an
elderly (11) …….….. They were arguing and he was threatening her with the gun. He was so
upset that, when he (12) …..….. the trigger, he completely (13) ….….. his wife and the
bullets went through the window striking Opus instead.
When a person (14) ….….. to kill subject A but kills subject B in the attempt, that person is
guilty of the murder of subject B. When confronted (15) …..….. this charge, the old man and
his wife were both adamant that neither of them knew that the gun was loaded.
The old man said that it was his long-standing habit to threaten his wife with the unloaded
gun. He had no (16) …..….. of murdering her – therefore, the killing of Opus appeared to be
an accident. That is, if the gun had been (17) …..….. loaded.
The continuing investigation, however, turned up a witness who saw the old couple’s son (18)
…..….. the gun approximately six weeks prior to the fatal incident. It transpired that the old
2. lady had (19) …..….. off her son’s financial support and the son, (20) …..….. the tendency of
his father to use the gun threateningly, loaded the gun with the expectation that his father (21)
…..….. shoot his mother.
Here was an exquisite twist. The son was none other that the dead man, Ronald Opus – the
suspected murderer and the victim were the one and the same!
Further investigation (22) …..….. that Ronald Opus had become increasingly despondent over
the failure of his attempt to engineer his mother’s murder. This led him to jump off the ten-
storey building on 23 March, (23) …..….. to be killed by his father’s gun blast through a ninth
storey window.
What would your (24) …..….. be – murder or suicide?
