Engineering Ethics & Social
Responsibility
Role of Engineers in HSE Sustainable Development
WPC Expert Workshop | 29 & 30, April, 2019
2. 2
Agenda
• What is Ethics?
• Ethics and Sustainability
• Stakeholder View VS. Shareholder View
• Stakeholder View in Real Context
• Stakeholder View and Sustainability
3. 3
What is Ethics?
Moral principles that govern a person's
behavior or the conducting of an activity.
What you
decide to do
What you are
able to do
What you
imagine to do
4. 4
Ethics and Sustainability
As engineers have impact
• on human lives
• on society
• on well being of there beings
What you
decide to do
From the perspective of ethics,
sustainable development is more
of a moral choice for an engineer
6. 6
Concept of Sustainability
Sustainable development :
• meeting human development goals while at the same time
sustaining the ability of natural systems to provide the natural
resources and ecosystem services upon which the economy and
society depend.
7. 7
Ethics and Social Responsibility
o Oil and Gas engineers play a role in sustainable
development through:
o Better designs for the new assets to reduce energy and feed consumption
and pollution.
o Improving existing assets by applying new technologies and modifying the
current facilities to have higher outputs with less inputs, safer operation
and less environmental impacts.
o Resolving operational issues and bottlenecks to increase the profitability,
environmental friendliness and improves social well being.
9. 9
Shareholder VS. Stakeholder View
• Shareholder is the one who has direct profit in the
project
• Stakeholder is who impacts/is impacted to/by project
• The strength of stakeholders has made a paradigm shift
towards paying attention to stakeholders
12. 12
Society as a Key Stakeholder
• Society is the main key
stakeholder to any project
• From stakeholder view
perspective, sustainable
development is a response to
the need of one the most
critical stakeholders of the
project
13. 13
Conclusion
• Engineers play a vital role in
sustainable development.
• From Stakeholder perspective
if the society is powerful and
alert, then sustainability is
what an engineer should take
into account.
14. 14
Conclusion
• Engineers play a vital role in
sustainable development.
• Even if the society is not
powerful and alert, then
engineering ethics and
business morality dictates the
engineers to consider
sustainability principles.
15. 15
And Remember…
• We, as human beings have been destructive to this planet, its
species, and also other human beings.
• Sustainability is not about being natural and human
• Sustainability is about being better than human beings
