Museum - Pens to Parchment - Louisiana Purchase Bicentennial
This is the story of how with the stroke of a pen, a fledgling America doubled its size and became a world power almost overnight. Our story recounts how this, more than any single event, would forever alter the course of our nation’s history. It was a time of global conflict. The Americans had just won independence from England. France was recovering from its own revolution. The powers in Europe were facing war on the continent while seeking to expand their empires beyond the boundaries of their own shores. Spain, England, and France had laid claim to territory in this so called “new world” across the sea. The American colonists, newly independent, were trying to make their own way. Thomas Jefferson knew that in order to our westward expansion and to secure the lifeline of trade we had to control the Mississippi River, and that meant the port of New Orleans. Then, as if to fulfill what some would call our manifest destiny, a sequence of events coincided to present us an opportunity of a lifetime. In a bold move out country entered into what’s been called the greatest real estate transaction of all time, known simply as the Louisiana Purchase. We acquired more than 800,000 square miles for $15 million dollars. That’s about 4 cents an acre for a territory that who’s natural resources held riches beyond anyone’s ability to calculate. As General Horatio Gates said to President Jefferson July 18th, 1803, “Let the land rejoice, for you have bought Louisiana for a song.” When we think of Louisiana as we know it today, it’s hard to imagine that it was once a vast territory stretching west across the plains to the Rocky Mountains, and north from the Gulf of Mexico all the way to the Canadian border. With the addition of an area greater than all of Western Europe, the United States suddenly became one of the largest nations in the world. Ultimately all or part of 15 states would be carved out of the lands of the Louisiana Territory; Louisiana, April 30th, 1812; Missouri, August 10th, 1821; Arkansas, June 15th, 1836; Texas, December 29th, 1845; Iowa, December 28th, 1846; Minnesota, May 11th, 1858; Kansas, January 29th, 1861; Nebraska March 1st, 1867; Colorado, August 1st, 1876; North Dakota, November 2nd, 1889; South Dakota, November 2nd, 1889; Montana, November 8th, 1889; Wyoming, July 10th, 1890; Oklahoma, November 16th, 1907; New Mexi.

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

Operation “Blue Star” is the only event in the history of Independent India where the state went into war with its own people. Even after about 40 years it is not clear if it was culmination of states anger over people of the region, a political game of power or start of dictatorial chapter in the democratic setup.
The people of Punjab felt alienated from main stream due to denial of their just demands during a long democratic struggle since independence. As it happen all over the word, it led to militant struggle with great loss of lives of military, police and civilian personnel. Killing of Indira Gandhi and massacre of innocent Sikhs in Delhi and other India cities was also associated with this movement.

The French Revolution, which began in 1789, was a period of radical social and political upheaval in France. It marked the decline of absolute monarchies, the rise of secular and democratic republics, and the eventual rise of Napoleon Bonaparte. This revolutionary period is crucial in understanding the transition from feudalism to modernity in Europe.

1. Louisiana Purchase Essay
Louisiana Purchase
I believe that the Louisiana Purchase was one of the greatest impacts on
American society because of the large amount of land and how it helped our economy. In this report
you will see how lucky that the United States is to have obtained this large piece of land from France.
Their are many reasons why Napoleon had to sell this large piece of land.
Napoleon thought that this land could be a great asset to the French if they knew what to do with it.
He didn't want to sell the Louisiana territory because he still had dreams of having a French empire
in America. At this point in time...show more content...
With New Orleans and Florida included in the Louisiana Purchase gave the Americans many
different ports for trading. This also helped the United States Navy, with all these new ports the
Americans could strengthen their defense and improve the navy. At this time the French were
very poor and needed the money so Jefferson knew he would get this piece of land for a very
cheap price. For fifteen million dollars the United States acquired Florida, the Mississippi river,
New Orleans, Rocky Mountains, sea ports , and the miles and miles of rich farmland all came with
the Louisiana Purchase. All in all everything went smoothly, but there was one minor problem with
this treaty. The problem was that Jefferson still did not how much land that he actually purchased.
He knew it was a lot but, did not know the exact specifications or were it started and ended.
Spain and the United States disputed over what land each one of them would get. The main issue in
this dispute was, who would get Florida and who would get Texas.
Eventually United States gave up claims to Texas so Spain could claim Texas. After
Spain gained Texas they gave up claims to Florida. The United States, right away claimed Florida.
All this was called the Adams Onis Treaty of 1819.This had a great a great impact on the American
society.
The Louisiana territory was purchased by Thomas Jefferson from

A recent purchase I made was for our 10 year–old son's Christmas gift. I chose to purchase an
all–terrain vehicle, also known as an ATV. There were several influences that made me decide to
make the purchase. Referring to the chart of items listed in Exhibit 5–2, physical and spatial
influences were present, social and interpersonal influences were present, and lastly purchase take
was present (Ferrell & Hartline, 2014). The physical and spatial influences were numerous. As soon
as I walked into the store, I knew I needed to make a purchase. The products are fun and safe and I
enjoyed the demonstrations. The store layout was set up just right. The introduction to off–road
vehicles was immediate upon entry. The social and interpersonal

3. Essay about Renting Versus Buying
Buying a home can be an exciting experience for anyone. However, in some cases you just might
be better off continuing to rent your home. There are many advantages to buying a home. However,
it is not for everyone and buying varies from individual to individual. Currently more people are
leaning towards renting but this could change in the near future.
When someone makes the decision to buy or rent a home they must consider the advantages and
disadvantages of each. In buying a home the primary advantage is that you actually own it. You
can do whatever you want with it. Also, you are building equity as the years go by. "People today
have problems saving for their future" (CNN Money, 2014). However, when they buy a home, the

You might be better off paying a reasonable amount for rent and saving your money when buying
seems more logical. Also, it depends on lifestyle preferences. Some people may not want to do all
the work that comes along with owning a home. As of right now many people are leaning towards
renting. This is because the market is going down. Some don't want to commit to a mortgage if
when they go to sell they can't find any buyers.
It is likely that the renting trend will decline and buying will increase in the future but it is hard to
say when. However, "if rent keeps rising and prices keep falling, fearful buyers could slowly
become bargain hunters." (Business Week, 2014). I feel that people will eventually get tired of
spending there money on rent and will want to invest more in there future. I don't think that the real
estate market will ever be a boom again. I believe that people have learned that just because
interest rates are low doesn't mean they can financially take on a mortgage. Overall, buying a
house is a big decision and should be looked at carefully. You should look at the advantages and
disadvantages of each and decide what is best for you in your life. There is no way to pin point if
buying or renting is best for anyone. Currently many prefer to rent their homes. However, as rent
rise, a majority may soon change their minds.

Module 3 – The Formative Years of the New Nation, 1820–1860
The Louisiana Purchase
The Louisiana Purchase was the largest land transaction for the United States, and the most
important event of President Jefferson's presidency. Jefferson arranged to purchase the land for
$11,250,000 from Napoleon in 1803. This land area lay between the Mississippi River and the
Rocky Mountains, stretching from the Gulf of Mexico to the Canadian border. The purchase of this
land greatly increased the economic resources of the United States, and proved Jefferson had
expansionist dreams by doubling the size of the United States. Jefferson believed that the republic
must be controlled by ambitious, independent, property–holding farmers, who would form...show

In view of the threatening crisis, President Jefferson immediately sent Mr. Monroe as envoy
extraordinary to the French court, with instructions to negotiate the purchase of Louisiana from
France.
In April 1803, the negotiation was concluded and the entire region of Louisiana was ceded to the
United States for the sum of $11,250,000 dollars (LeFeber 182). The American negotiators seized the
favorable circumstances to urge the claims of American merchants on the French government for
$3,750,00. This important acquisition more than doubled the territory of the United States. The great
majority of the nation received the treaty with jubilation, but there were some particularly in the
eastern States that disclaimed strenuously against it. They saw in the great enlargement of our
territory and was nogthing more thatn a great waste, a wilderness unpeopled with any beings
except wolves and wandering Indians. We are to give money of which we have too little for land of
which we already have too much (LeFeber 183).
When the treaty arrived from France; the Jefferson requested that Congress convene at the earliest
day practicable for its ratification and execution. The Federalists in both houses declaimed and
voted against it, but they were now so reduced in numbers as to be incapable of serious opposition.
The question on its ratification in the Senate was decided by twenty–four to
