AT&T AND TRI-C ANNOUNCE THE CLETeenHack
CODING FOR COMMUNITY: CIVIC ENGAGEMENT
Nine-week programming contest led by We Can Code IT for Northeast Ohio high
school students focuses on civic engagement as Cleveland prepares to host the RNC
in July
CLEVELAND (Mar. 14, 2016) — AT&T* and Cuyahoga Community College (Tri-C) today
announced the CLETeenHack Coding for Community: Civic Engagement, a 9-week
programming contest for Northeast Ohio area high school students. Cleveland-based We
Can Code IT will lead the training for students while Junior Achievement Cleveland will work
with all of the partners to engage the students with career readiness skills.
CLETeenHack seeks to provide Cleveland-area high school students 21st century skills via
computer science education; prepare the students for college and career readiness; solve
real world problems; and open the doors of opportunity and creativity. The theme of
CLETeenHack is civic engagement as Greater Cleveland prepares to host the 2016
Republican National Convention (RNC) in July.
Students will work over the next nine weeks to design an app on civic engagement in
anticipation of the RNC and the general election in November. Teams of students will design
and code different portions of the app while working with mentors, instructors and other
assistants. The students will use HTML, CSS and JavaScript to create the final application,
which will be usable on computers, phones and tablets.

The following high schools will participate in CLETeenHack: Beaumont, John Marshall, Jane
Adams, Shaw and West Shore Career-Technical District (Lakewood).
Students will meet at Tri-C on Wednesday, March 16, to kick-off CLETeenHack and
brainstorm project ideas. They will hear from We Can Code IT and other organizing
partners, including Junior Achievement and Destination Cleveland.

and manage the CLETeenHack,” said Mel McGee, CEO, We Can Code IT. “Students
throughout Greater Cleveland must gain access to 21st century tech skills more than ever
before, and our proven model engages people from all walks of life to make coding
approachable and fun. Furthermore, coding can and should be integrated with any subject
and through this special event teens are not only learning how to code, but also about
politics and their community.”
Judges will review projects submitted for the app on the software quality, execution,
creativity and the potential impact on Greater Cleveland. A team of Northeast Ohio area
leaders will judge the students’ work, and the completed app will be unveiled at the finale
event May 6.

Executive Director, Tri-C Information Technology Center of Excellence. “The partnership
that created this program fits into the College’s mission to stimulate interest in IT careers
and create a highly skilled workforce to lead Northeast Ohio into the future.”
