AT&T and Sinclair Community College Announce
Miami Valley Teen Hackathon
Programming competition aims to provide 21st
century skills via computer science,
robotics, and unmanned aerial systems education
DAYTON, Ohio, Sept. 29, 2017 — AT&T* and Sinclair Community College will kick-off the
2017-2018 Miami Valley Teen Hackathon on Tuesday, Oct. 3. Students from high schools and
organizations throughout the Miami Valley can participate in this programming contest. The
theme for the Hackathon is, “Creating a Safe and Secure Home.”
Media interested in covering the Hackathon should report to the Smith Auditorium in
Building 12 on the Sinclair Community College Dayton Campus by 9 a.m. on Oct. 3.
“I thank AT&T and Sinclair Community College for bringing this innovative challenge to high
school students in our region,” said State Representative Niraj Antani. “This contest will
provide real-world programming skills, and create new technology-based solutions that will
help prepare them for a technology-driven workforce.”
The Hackathon will equip Miami Valley students with 21st century skills via computer science
and technology education, provide college and career readiness, solve real-world problems
and open the doors of opportunity and creativity. Students will be challenged to develop
home automation solutions through applications, virtual reality or robotics to make today’s
homes smarter and more secure.
Students will meet on Oct. 3 at the Sinclair Community College Dayton Campus. They will
brainstorm project ideas and hear from community leaders including Arijit Sengupta,
Associate Dean of Undergraduate Programs at Wright State University. Sengupta will
address application development.
Through a four-month period, students will focus on developing home solutions in one of
the following categories: Apps and Coding, Robotics, Unmanned Aerial Systems or
Cybersecurity. Team projects will be judged on quality, execution, creativity and the
potential impact on the Miami Valley region. A panel of local IT professionals will judge the
students’ work. Winners will be announced at a finale event on Jan. 31.

companies must partner to introduce non-traditional methods to stimulate interest and
talent in tech fields. This Hackathon is one way that AT&T and Sinclair Community College
are working together to promote computer science and tech education, prepare high school
students for college and careers, and enable them to express their creativity."
