Three Ohio Colleges to Host 2018 TECHCORPShack Sponsored by AT&T
TECH CORPS, AT&T and Ohio colleges team up to educate high school students about coding
and computer science
COLUMBUS, OHIO, November 15, 2018 – Capital University, Sinclair Community College
and Zane State College will host the 2018 TECHCORPShack on Friday, November 16, 6pm-
9pm and Saturday, November 17, 9am-4pm for high school students in grades 9 through 12. This
event, sponsored by AT&T, will give high school students in the Columbus, Dayton, and
Zanesville regions the opportunity to learn about computer science in a fun, engaging and
inclusive environment.
During the event, students will learn how to utilize MIT App Inventor to explore the world of
mobile app development to create an app that can help with the opioid epidemic, a real-world
problem. Students will also have the opportunity to meet and work with peers, technology
professionals and advocates from their community.
“This is an extraordinary chance for our students to get hands-on experience that can boost their
interest in technology careers,” said City of Bexley Mayor Ben Kessler, who will speak to
participants in the Columbus regional hackathon this weekend. “Even better – their work on
mobile apps will be dedicated to addressing problems that affect all of us.”
“It’s great to see AT&T and TECH CORPS working together to further our students’ technology
expertise,” said City of Dayton Mayor Nan Whaley, who will talk with students during the
hackathon in the Dayton region. “Efforts like this can only mean good things for our business
community and workforce.”
Cash prizes will be awarded to winning teams in each region. Regional winners will go on to
compete in the final competition on Saturday, December 8 in Columbus, Ohio. Each member of
the team that wins the finale will receive $500.
“I’m excited to learn what kinds of solutions our students develop,” said State Rep. Brian Hill,
who represents a portion of Zanesville. “Using technology to tackle real-world problems in
Ohio, such as the opioid crisis, is simply smart. Thanks to both AT&T and TECH CORPS for
making these hackathons possible.”
