North America is made up of countries. One of these is the United States. Above the United
States is a country called Canada. Below the United States is a country called Mexico.
To the right on this map (east) of the United States is a body of water called the Atlantic
Ocean and to the left (west) is another body of water called the Pacific Ocean.

The United States is made up of 50 states. Most of the states border each other. There are
two states that do not touch the rest of the states. These are Alaska and Hawaii.

11. Our Capital: Washington, D.C.
Every country has a capital. This is where the government makes important decisions, such as laws. It is also where
the President lives and Congress meet. The Supreme Court judges work here too.
The capital of the United States is Washington, D.C. It is named after George Washington, who was the first President
of the United States. It is located on the east coast and is surrounded by the states of Maryland and Virginia on the
Potomac River. It is America's first planned city and was designed by Pierre L'Enfant.
Washington D.C. was not always the capital of the United States. Both New York City and Philadelphia were once the
capital, but in the year 1800, Washington, D.C., became the official capital.

The Post Office / The Mail Carrier
Letter carriers deliver the mail. When you have mail to send, the letter carrier will pick it up and send it. Even when
the weather is bad, the letter carrier still brings your mail. Do you know your address?

Fire fighters put out fires. They also respond to other emergencies, such as accidents. Do you know what to do if there is a fire in

Police officers help keep you and your neighborhood safe. They make sure people follow rules. They also direct traffic
and solve crimes.

The Doctor
When you are sick or hurt, the doctor is there to help. Doctors examine you to find out what is wrong and make you
feel better. You don't just go to the doctor when you're sick. You can also go for check-ups so that you don't get sick. If
you get sick or hurt at school, you can see your school nurse.

Teachers help you learn about many subjects. What is your favorite subject in school? There are other people in your school who
can help you. Some examples are your principal, guidance counselor, teacher's aid, nurse, and librarian.

The librarian
Libraries are full of information. Some of the information is in books and magazines, and some of the information is
on computers. If you have a question, a librarian can help you find the answer. Librarians can be found in schools and
at your local library.
