Building a Sustainable Transportation Infrastructure
A sustainable, accessible, and more affordable transportation system is key to improving quality of life. While the challenge of
creating such a mobility ecosystem in the United States is daunting, some current trends are paving the way to green mobility.
The 2021 Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act focuses significantly on transportation infrastructure investments and
recognizes that efficient and reliable mass transit is critical to addressing congestion, pollution, and carbon emissions1.
Innovative new business models and technological advances are emerging to enable more affordable and sustainable rail
transportation. Manufacturers such as Hitachi have developed more efficient components and systems for electric vehicles
(EVs) and are working to expand and modernize the grid that will power these vehicles.
Finally, investment in the transportation sector means investment in American jobs. Hitachi Rail is building a state-of-the-
art factory that will sustain a total of 1,300 jobs - direct, indirect and induced that will bring significant economic benefits2.

Maximizing Decarbonization Through Rail
Rail transit offers many advantages over on-
road transport, including lower fuel
consumption and emissions, reduced road
congestion, fewer fatalities and lower
public infrastructure costs.
As rail ridership in the U.S. has increased
52% over the past 20 years, the U.S.
government is poised to invest in rail
infrastructure modernization to improve
efficiency, provide a better passenger
experience, and increase sustainability in
the transportation sector3.

Hitachi’s Innovative Technology for Sustainable Rail
Hitachi Rail projects in various regions across the United
States are delivering new train control systems, providing
state-of-the-art rail cars and deploying a driverless rail
metro system.
In one high-profile project, Hitachi is deploying digital train
control technology that will increase capacity by more than
40%, directly contributing to more accessible, affordable
transportation for residents4.
Hitachi is working with operators, cities and governments in
the U.S. and around the world to improve rail infrastructure
and further increase efficiency through battery-powered
trains, digital controls and smart sensors.

Paving the Path to Green Mobility with EVs
Electric vehicles are an essential part of the transition
to a sustainable transportation ecosystem. Hitachi has
been deeply involved in the development of direct EV
technologies, working across the entire chain of
materials, manufacturing and maintenance.
As a climate change innovator, Hitachi is addressing
challenges related to energy supply and emissions to
& from EVs, and developing circular economy
solutions related to battery materials, procurement,
reuse and disposal to support carbon neutrality.
Hitachi is also developing scalable, digitized charging
architectures to increase the efficiency of commercial
fleets.
