Organizations must take a transformative approach to climate change by identifying opportunities for decarbonization and value creation beyond emissions reduction alone. This requires considering implications for business from the net-zero industrial revolution using a systems perspective. Sustainable decision making at the portfolio level and key enablers for sustainable IT operations are areas that can help organizations mitigate climate losses and capture value during the transition to a low-carbon economy.

Organizations must take a transformative and far-sighted
approach to climate change, looking beyond emissions
reduction to identify opportunities for decarbonization
and value creation. This requires a systems perspective
that considers the net-zero industrial revolution and its
implications for business. To be successful, organizations
must identify where to play and how to win in the low-
carbon future. This means mitigating climate-induced
losses and capturing value from the transition to a low-
carbon economy.
Organizations need a transformative and systems-based approach in order to mitigate climate-induced losses and capture
value when transitioning to a low-carbon economy, identifying opportunities for decarbonization and value creation
beyond emissions reduction.

Sustainable Decision Making at Portfolio Level
How to Address Sustainability in Portfolio Management
Why is Portfolio Management Relevant to Sustainability?
Sustainability considered in
decision making
Sustainability rating based
on business case input
Simplification through pre-
defined categories
Incorporation of sustainability in
business case
Enabling factors to add sustainability aspects to a project.
Some examples might include:
Research suggests that the next step in taking a holistic, sustainable approach to project
planning requires addressing sustainability in portfolio management decision making.
• Traditional project portfolio management (PPM) has a focus on the project life cycle
• Modern PPM techniques like lean portfolio management (LPM) enable extended incorporation of
non-IT stakeholders
• It is argued that project management plays a crucial role in realizing sustainability in organizations
and in society, and that project and program managers are significantly placed to make
contributions. Sustainability is the next step in taking a wholistic, environmental view that considers
the societal impact as well as the pre- and post project impact in PPM
• Metrics are required to enable a sustainable choice in making portfolio decisions

Digital pollution is expected to match that of gasoline cars by 2025.

Implement liquid cooling with treated water or seawater instead of ventilation

Create sustainability knowledge and competence
Technology initiatives towards a sustainable IT organization require specialized knowledge. While
sustainability can be a qualitative factor in decision-making processes for IT sourcing, a holistic
sustainability mindset should be created via knowledge and competencies. Knowledge databases
with market insights should be established and training on sustainable service delivery made
available.
Build a sustainability-oriented culture
Anchoring the idea of sustainability in the IT strategy is one step. Tactical and operational actions,
however, must be embedded at all levels and geographies of the organization by creating an
active sustainability-minded tech culture via policies and initiatives for energy-efficient IT usage.
Make sustainability goal achievements visible internally and externally
Actively report about the achievements regarding reduction of energy and waste consumption of
IT. Recognize the contribution of employees in the transformation process.
Facilitate and promote workforce contribution
Enable the introduction of innovative ideas by employees via mechanisms such as roundtables,
innovation hubs and coffee talks. Encourage participation by making it clear that funding is
available for sustainability-led initiatives from employees.

2023 Deloitte 11
Considering the previously shown CIO focus topics and leveraging our extensive automotive experience, we can
synthesize the key takeaways of enhancing sustainability in IT with automotive specifics.
Key Takeaways
Our Findings Our Solutions
While using energy-efficient technologies and consolidating tools can generate
quick wins, cloud transformation ambitions lead to a more promising reduction
of IT energy consumption
Data centers are central to maintaining efficient IT, but
are also core drivers of energy consumption
Infrastructure
Sustainability has an impact on IT, the CIO and the
corresponding IT strategy
CIOs respond differently to sustainability depending on the role of IT in their
organization: driving change, enhancing efficiency or co-creating with business
Strategy
Sustainability is the next step in taking a holistic,
environmental approach to portfolio management
Portfolio decision making requires clear and transparent metrics on the
sustainability impact as part of a project or product business case
Portfolio
Multiple levers to increase sustainability can be utilized
in the operational IT domain
Momentum for change can be gained by implementing quick wins that have a
short-term impact on energy consumption and CO2 output
Operations
The transformation towards a sustainability-oriented organization requires the
engagement of key stakeholders and creation of a sustainability-aware culture
Sustainability transformations do not reach their
expected benefits if change management, workforce,
and culture are not taken into consideration
