improvements, and uses rainwater to reduce
water scarcity in affected areas and save water
resources.4
• VW's car manufacturing cut water use by
17.4% per vehicle in 2010-2022 with
recycling and low-water methods.5
Green Steel and Waste
• Mercedes-Benz is cooperating with a Swedish
green steel startup to strive for CO₂ neutrality,
as steel is responsible for 30% of CO₂ emissions
during production.1
• BMW is also working on CO₂-free steel
production and currently uses recycling and
steel trading to reduce steel waste.2

• ZF has committed to increasing its annual
purchase of electricity from renewable energy

Organizations must take a transformative and far-sighted
approach to climate change, looking beyond emissions
reduction to identify opportunities for decarbonization
and value creation. This requires a systems perspective
that considers the net-zero industrial revolution and its
implications for business. To be successful, organizations
must identify where to play and how to win in the low-
carbon future. This means mitigating climate-induced
losses and capturing value from the transition to a low-
carbon economy.

** Power usage effectiveness is a relevant indicator of a data center’s efficiency, comparing the
energy used by the entire facility and the energy used by IT equipment. The closer to 1, the
greater the efficiency.

Comparing on-premise DPCs* with the DPCs of the main cloud providers shows
a ~30% reduction in PUE**1
Cloud migration is projected to prevent the release of 1,014 million tonnes of CO2 in
2021-2024 - the equivalent of taking over 220 million vehicles off the road for a year. 2
Did you know that consuming 10 GB of data is equivalent to driving 1km in a gasoline car?
Digital pollution is expected to match that of gasoline cars by 2025.
Select cooler locations like Iceland, Norway and Sweden to reduce the need for

Implement liquid cooling with treated water or seawater instead of ventilation
systems to reduce energy needs.
Shut down “zombie servers”. IBM estimates that these account for as much as 30%
of all virtual servers and 25% of physical servers (as of end of 2021).
Compute efficiency and AI support improvements in data processing. By analyzing
workflows, AI can reduce the power consumption of unused infrastructure.

Create sustainability knowledge and competence
Technology initiatives towards a sustainable IT organization require specialized knowledge. While
sustainability can be a qualitative factor in decision-making processes for IT sourcing, a holistic
sustainability mindset should be created via knowledge and competencies. Knowledge databases
with market insights should be established and training on sustainable service delivery made
available.
Build a sustainability-oriented culture
Anchoring the idea of sustainability in the IT strategy is one step. Tactical and operational actions,
however, must be embedded at all levels and geographies of the organization by creating an
active sustainability-minded tech culture via policies and initiatives for energy-efficient IT usage.
Make sustainability goal achievements visible internally and externally
Actively report about the achievements regarding reduction of energy and waste consumption of
IT. Recognize the contribution of employees in the transformation process.
Facilitate and promote workforce contribution
Enable the introduction of innovative ideas by employees via mechanisms such as roundtables,
innovation hubs and coffee talks. Encourage participation by making it clear that funding is
available for sustainability-led initiatives from employees.
