2. Why Sewers?
Visiting a sewage works may seem like an
odd thing to choose to do; but what
happens to our waste is more important
than you might think!
3. Background to the Billing
sewers…
In the late 1870’s the site was a sewage
disposal farm of approximately 500 acres
The site treats sewage for a population of
approximately 300,000
provides full treatment for flows up to
1,850 liters per second
treated waste is discharged to the River
Nene
4. Why Billing sewers?
There has been ongoing complaints
about the odour the treatment works
produce
“As the smell has been persistent for years
but has got worse since 2012” (Ecton
village residents)
5. Anglian Water…
“We would like to apologise for any
inconvenience which may have been
caused on the weekend of 11 & 12
October, when odours were reported in
Ecton village”
Contemporary , Ongoing row… exactly what we need!
6. How will these complaints
work for me?
Ongoing complaints from the residents will
give me a current story to tell that will still
have anger and frustration within them.
(This will make the documentary more
interesting)
7. Finding the balance…
Although it would be interesting to just
have interviews form the residents its
important to remember its still a news
piece and I need to find the balance in
the story
8. Who will I be interviewing?
The experts
- Clair Carter (site manager)
- Other staff working the site
The residents (that have been affected by
the odours, living at the Ecton Village)
9. Research questions
Why are odours more stronger in different
seasons than others?
What has been done to prevent these
odours?
Will the odours ever completely go?
How have the odours from the treatment
affected residents in their day to day life?
Week commencing 26th October 2014 showed that there is a high percentage of audience that watch documentaries,
BBC2 Take 5.2% of the viewing share, a channel I will be aiming to produce for. As my documentary will have similar conventions to the documentaries showcased on the channel.
National Treasures of wales, aims to investigate how the national trust looks after wales treasures. This compares to mine as I will also be taking an investigational approach that now only attracts local audience of Northampton but the national audience too.
