1. Middle Class Family
In our short film we will need
to portray a middle-upper
class family in order to allow
us to challenge middle class
ideologies and beliefs as the
middle class are represented
throughout media texts as
dominant and secure who
are protected by their middle
class surroundings.
2. This means that when sourcing costumes for
our actors and actresses we will need to
purchase/hire clothing which the middle class
are likely to wear. The middle class are
stereotyped as smart and all maintain a
glamorous appearance – elegance is also
associated with our middle class family. This
means that our male ‘father’ character will
need to wear formal, business attire in order to
conform to the stereotype. Our female mother
will also need to wear formal attire like a fancy
frock and heels in order to convey the
dominance and respect within society.
Black patent heels are a fashion accessory
that middle class females would wear as
they are elegant and a signifier of wealth.
Our female mother would wear shoes like
these as they reinforce their wealth and
eye for attention which creates even more
shock when their true identities are revealed.
We will need to
purchase profession
attire for our mother as
formal, simplistic
clothing is associated
with class and wealth
which are traits that our
middle class family have
inherited. This means
that we will be able to
portray a realistic middle
class family who are
educated and
sophisticated.
3. Our father character will also need to
wear clothing which is associated with
the middle class in order to create a
realistic representation. We will dress our
fatherly character in business, smart
attire in order to portray his
professionalism and his middle class
traits. The middle class are stereotyped to
take pride in their appearance which
means that our characters will not be
scruffy instead they will be clean, and
well groomed to ensure that we are able
to convey the middle class through the
family within our film.
By dressing our actors and actresses in
specific clothing items allows us to create
strong representations of the characters
and the lifestyles they are living. This
further emphasises the juxtaposition at
the end of the film where the middle class
true intentions are revealed leading to
fatal consequences.
4. Our main protagonist within the film is an undercover
police constable who is investigating into a family
suspected to be serial killers however, DCI Jones’s
identity must remain a mystery. We have decided to
chosen formal business attire for our character as
although his identity must remain a secret his character
would generally wear formal clothing as he is a member
of the middle-upper class. This means that within our
film we would be able to challenge the middle class
ideologies and go against hegemony in order to create
the juxtaposition at the end of the film.
Costume, hair and make-up is important
within our film as it allows us to portray
the characters lifestyle through their
clothing as it is stereotypical of the middle-
upper classes.
