Ndw celebration day_ppt_2010_2011

Editor's Notes

  1. Welcome/Opener (9:00-9:15) Becky Welcome to our second annual NDW celebration day! You should have found name tags on your table.  If not, please grab one and include both your first name and your school district.  Restrooms Granola Bars
  2. Here’s a quick look at today’s agenda. (Go through agenda) Thanks to those of you who volunteered to answer some interview questions about your NDW experience. Teacher interviews will be taking place as students are working together this morning! The majority of student interviews will occur either during break time or lunch. We really appreciate your willingness to do this!
  3. 9:00-9:15 (15 minutes) Becky You should all have markers and a piece of chart paper on your table. Please spend the next 10 minutes working together to decorate the chart paper in a way that reflects your team and your wiki. (For ideas, think about your wiki’s topic and arguments, what your team did really well, etc.)    Also. your team will need to come up with a new name for your group's wiki.  We are going to rename the wikis so that they are not Team #1, Team #2, etc. The title on your home page might be perfect.     Include your team number and your topic somewhere on the paper. (While teams are working on this, get them set up w/ computers as needed!!)
  4. (9:15-10:15) Team Project Focus Kay Chances are, you’ve been so caught up in getting your own project completed that you haven’t really had a chance to spend much time looking at your teammates’ projects or reflecting on your own project’s strengths. This morning we’d like your group to spend some time in this area. You all have so much to be proud of! Now’s the time to show it off!
  5. 9:15-10:15 (Team Project Focus--Project Self Reflection, Share with Teammates, Positive Pats on the Back) Kay (5 minutes) On your table you should find a ‘Positive Pats on the Back’ handout for each of you. Please fill in your website title, group number, and your name. Now we’d like for you to spend a moment looking at and/or thinking about your writing project from Phase III. For example, you may have done a poetry project – or created an e-book. Think about the project you chose. You have about 5 minutes to think about what went well in regard to your project. What are you most proud of? Once you’ve generated some ideas, please write down your comments in the box titled, “What went well in regard to my project?”
  6. (9:15-10:15) Kay Now we’d like for you to spend about 5 minutes each telling your teammates about your project.    During this sharing time, you will be in one of two roles.  A presenter or a teammate.   As a Presenter... you have 3-4 minutes to talk about the following items.. Talk about what we see on the wiki, but also about all of the work behind the scenes.  What are you most proud of? What road blocks did you encounter?  What did you learn from doing this project? Pull your project up on the computer and show your group your project as you explain it!     After your presentation to the group, pause and give your teammates 1-2 minutes to write what they like about your project or your work.  Collect "your" sticky notes and place them on your "positive pats" worksheet.   As a Teammate: Your job is to be a good listener.  As you listen, think about the strong points of each teammate’s project. After each presentation, write down on the sticky note what you especially like about your teammate’s project. Sign your sticky note and give to your teammate to ‘stick on’ their handout.
  7. 10:15-10:25 (Break) Put yellow and blue stickies on tables now   Have Scavenger Hunt papers ready to go...or we can put them in the middle of the tables upside down. I would ask those who are teams to be interviewed during this time.  Maybe Belmond or Iowa Falls?
  8. 10:25-10:40 Scavenger Hunt: (Heather) In order for you to get a quick glimpse at the other teams' wikis, we're going to do a scavenger hunt.   For this activity, you'll need a partner from your team.  If you have an uneven number, a group of three is fine.  One computer per group!!  If you have more than one, please put the other off to the side for this activity. Kay is bringing around the scavenger hunt.  Please do not look at it--keep it face down.   When I say 'begin' you'll have 5 minutes to go to each of the wikis and find the answer to the question.  Please understand if it says "team 1's wiki", that means the answer is on 'team 1's wiki, and so on.   At the end of 5 minutes we will ask you to stop and count up the number of answers you've found.  The group(s) with the most correct answers will get a prize. Any questions?  You may begin!
  9. 10:40-11:10 (Review of others’ wikis): (Heather) Now we're going to give you an opportunity to take a closer look at a few of the other wikis.   Please work with the same partner or partners you had for the scavenger hunt for this activity.       You and your partner will be given 3 wikis to examine.  As you look at the wikis, we ask that you provide positive feedback to those teams.
  10. On yellow sticky notes, list what you like about this site. (One ‘thing’ per sticky note). And include team number. On blue sticky notes, list things you learned from this site. (One ‘thing’ per sticky note). And include team number.
  11. When you finish looking at the wiki’s (all of them), make sure team’s numbers are written on the sticky notes. Then stick on each team’s decorated chart paper.
  12. 11:10-11:30 Final Wiki Announcements/What Happens Now?/Next Year! (Kay)   Now comes the fun and exciting part!   If you remember back to our first day together, the purpose of creating a website, was not just for us or for your teachers, it is to share your opinions (supported with evidence) to a larger audience.     Beginning next week, you will notice some changes in your wiki.  The discussion pages will disappear, the feedback and project information pages will be hidden, and you will no longer have access to make any changes.    The name of your wiki will also change to reflect the name that you have chosen today.  The URL of your wiki will not change, but the title of the wiki will.   Once that is completed your wiki will be advertised through a variety of media outlets and social media outlets, such as Twitter or our AEA267 Facebook page.  This will also be shared with administrators and teachers across AEA267, as well as administrators of the nine AEAs.
  13. You can do your part to spread the word to others about you and your team mates exciting work!   Present or provide announcements to:  Community clubs & organizations: e.g. Lions, Kiwanis, Jaycees, PEO,       teacher                           organizations School board Other classrooms Local newspaper   We encourage you and/or your district team  to make presentations to your school board or at a upcoming teacher staff meeting.     Share with others through: Facebook Email Twitter Your school's home page You blog or website   If you or your teacher has a facebook or twitter account, spread the word using those tools.  Word can spread quickly and easily when these tools are used.  Ask the person who is in charge of your school's website to put a link to your wikis on their school's website.
  14. Each of your teachers will be receiving a flyer advertising next year's NDW.   Sign-up is going on now and is on our AEA267 Literacy website, as well as on this year's wiki.
  15. 11:30-11:40 (10 minutes) Hand out Certificates: (All of Us) Please hold your applause until the end!
  16. 11:40-11:50 (10 minutes) Surveys (Becky) The link to the survey is on the NDW wiki's homepage http://ndw2010.wikispaces.com/ We'd like everyone, students and teachers to take a few minutes to offer us your honest feedback.  This will help us as we plan for next year!
  17. Lunch Announcement/Thank You (Becky) (Interviews will be taking place during this time for students!)
