The Effect Of Mass Media On The Vietnam War
1. The Effect Of Mass Media On The Vietnam War
Lastly on the current wars (Iraq/Afghanistan), it was big from 2001 when the World Trade Center's
Fell and we united as a country to about 2005. People stopped really caring. The media wasn't really
supportive of it and the nation's attention span followed in suit. It wasn't until around 2010 when
both parties gained interest in the conflict when the drawdown of Iraq and the subsequent drawn
down of Afghanistan and then again the build back up in Iraq and Afghanistan with ISIS. But still,
the American people are just not bothered by it anymore. Americans also trusted television more
than radio; therefore it provoked a more radical response. Along with the new developing mediums
for news outlets, the whole process of reporting sped up with the ... Show more content on

The news corporations during Vietnam no longer had to rely on the government to fly reporters out
to the front, due to the new recourses corporations had. Since the media was no longer dependent on
the government, news reporters no longer felt obliged to conform to the views of the government as
a form of gratitude. The media had a profound effect on both the Vietnam War and World War II.
During World War II, the media helped the war effort significantly. Through the promotion of war
bonds, victory gardens, conservation and other pro war efforts, the media positively impacted not
only the public opinion of the war, but also the fight itself. The media's impact on Vietnam, on the
other hand, was extremely detrimental to public support of the war. Analyzing the overall effect of
media on both wars, the outstanding conclusion remains that the media, by influencing public
opinions and action, has a significant effect on the outcome of war. In World War II, the government
sailed to victory with the public at its back. Media encouraged citizens to enlist in the army, work in
factories, and do whatever it takes at home to win. In Vietnam, the government's withdrawal of
troops only occurred after the majority of Americans realized that the U.S had failed its job of
bringing democracy to the region. Through the presentation of the war in the media, Americans
realized Vietnam was a lost cause. The anti–war movement grew in response to the portrayal of the
war in the news, eventually effecting the decisions of policy makers. The course that media can take
during a war can be as unpredictable as the war itself. While many factors account for the outcomes
of armed conflict, the influence of the media remains a dominant one, exemplified by its diverse yet
powerful effects on both World War II and the Vietnam

2. Negative Effects Of Mass Media
The Mass media is one of the most unique feature of modern society and it has brought with it a
variety of changes like increase in social interactions, social change and a change in the standard of
life. Media plays an outstanding role in strengthening society because of its purpose in informing,
educating and entertaining people. Because of the media's inherent ability to reach large groups of
people, it used to convey different messages. The media industries is divided into 9 major industries:
the book, newspaper, magazine, film, recording, radio, broadcast television, cable television and
computer. These industries have evolved through five different stages over time to appeal to
different audiences in different places. There is an association between the development of mass
media and social change although there is still debate on if this change is detrimental or beneficial to
society as a whole. There has been further argument that the mass media can be used as an
instrument because it can be used in influencing people into certain modes of belief. This debate is
further emphasized by the difference between active and passive audiences. Salomon and Cohen
(1978) argued that unless viewers pay attention to messages, those messages can have no effect on
them and therefore should not be considered as exposure. It would be a bit silly to contemplate that
a character in Breaking Bad or Game of Thrones could influence an audience's attitude, beliefs or
interpretations but a

PAt the beginning of XXI century communication processes perform an important role in regulation
of state and economic interests. The modern world of information builds its own priorities, based on
new types of opportunities of the media and media content. Media content are messages produced
by mass media such as Internet, newspapers, magazines, books, video entertainments and television.
People have great opportunities of getting information they need in short time. Mass media are
important functions of political literacy of citizens and an important channel of political
communication (Louw,2010). Without Internet, television, newspapers and magazines, even well–

The Chinese Government blocked access to Google due to the top popularity among users
(BBCnews, 2002). Political actions between specific countries and the hostile international
relations, which later can be a part of the history, are important factors that can affect media content.
As example might be used an impact of terrorism on mass media. Terrorism is an action of using
violence, danger to fright or to force usually for political interest ( Seib and Janbek, 2011). The
terrorist attack that killed nearly 3000 people at the World Trade Center and Pentagon on 11th
September 2001 and declaration of the war in Afganistan (BBC, n.d.) influenced media in a whole
world. When George W. Bush blamed Al Qaida terrorist network created by Osama bin Laden about
9/11 attack ( Seib and Janbek, 2011), the media oozed hatred calling for anti Arab and Muslim
people. The word "Jidahist" was highlighted in newspapers. As P. Bergen and J. Rowland wrote, the
meaning of the word "Jidahist" is terrorist associated with or motivated by Al Qaeda (Bergen &
Rowland, 2012). Sumbul Ali–Karamali in the CNN blog wrote a post about American Muslim's
lives in fear after 9/11 2001 (Ali–Kamarali, 2012). These political–historical time and religion
prejudice became the main motivation in 2010 to create a Bollywood movie with the famous actor

October 1, 2017. Las Vegas, Nevada. At a music festival 58 people were killed and around 500
hundred injured. Because of the atrocity of the shooting, people are still talking about it months
later. Within the month afterwards four more mass shootings occurred as opposed to a single one the
previous month (Gun Violence Archive). Why the sudden increase in mass shootings? This
particular shooting brought a lot of attention and media time, but it's not the only one people have
heard about. It seems almost as if there is a shooting every day. Media has the tendency to over
exaggerate the amount and severity of shootings. Reporting excessively on mass shootings can
actually increase the amount of shootings. Placing minimal restrictions on media reports could
prevent future shootings and protect more people from harm. Mass shootings have different
definitions based on each person's opinion. The official definition according to the Investigative
Assistance for Violent Crimes Act of 2012 is "3 or more killings in a single incident; and... [in] a
place of public use". Some attacks often reported on only result in injuries and no deaths, this causes
the appearances of many more attacks than in reality. Terrorist attacks are not included because the
meaning of their violence is different from shooters. Terrorists are more about invoking fear among
people who are against their group. Shooters want to inflict pain on others and usually are working
alone. They both lead to fear and pain

5. The Effects Of Mass Media On Teens
The great Malcom X said that "The media's the most powerful entity on earth. They have the power
to make the innocent guilty and to make the guilty innocent, and that's power. Because they control
the minds of the masses". In today's society, mass media plays a vital role and is a significant aspect
in many people's lives. Mass media consists of the internet, television, news, music, game systems,
radio, and the press; mass media is used everywhere and for everything. Specifically, in teenagers
lives, mass media plays a significant role. Tennagers are in their grwoing stages and at this time
everything that surrounds them influences them greatly. That being said, the media has a great
impact on teens in regards to teen dating violence which has affected them physically, emotionally,
and sexually. Furthermore, we have found that certain aspects of media are associated with high
risks teen dating violence, specifically the time spent using it and the effects of the content in which
teens are exposed to.
Exposure to violent media from entities such as video games is one cause that has been found to
have large effects on teens in regards to teen dating violence. According to Bushman and Craig
(2001), "exposure to television and movie violence suggests that playing violent video games will
increase aggressive behavior, and a meta–analytic review of the video–game research literature
reveals that violent video games increase aggressive behavior in children and young adults" (Craig

6. The Effects Of Mass Media On The Society
According to Meltzoff and Moore (1977), heavy exposure to television is believed to be one of the
causes of aggressive behavior, crime, and violence in the society. The potential of the mass media
for social mobilization, education, and attitude change has been recognized and has been exploited
in different parts of the world with varying degrees of success. But the effect that the mass media
will produce at given situation still remains a subject of debate even today.
Summing up what is known about the effect of the mass media, Berelson (1948:172) in Mcquail
(2000:457)submitted "that some kinds of communication, on some kinds of issues ,brought to the
attention of some kinds of people, under some kinds of conditions, have some kinds of effect".
The effects and influences, which motion pictures have, imply that the movies, as stimuli, have
specific effects and influences on an inert audience that are in some manners especially
impressionable, and hence may be affected or swayed in a given direction. This one direction
conception of effects is widely held. The supposed inactiveness of motion picture audience has
extremely excited many people; and forms the basis of many attitudes and beliefs about the
supposed good and bad effects of the movie.
There is this view that the effects of the motion picture on behavior and attitudes are small and
transitory. This seems to be the underlying attitude of those, which characterize motion pictures as
mere entertainment. The

Final Essay While there have been ideas and mass media in which we have access to, there is small

they can sell to those, whom they might not be able to, if it was not for the internet. Firstly, the
question of how does social media on the Internet affect American culture, this can be answered in a
few ways, such as the young kids in our country as well as grownups have started to use short cuts

9. Mass Media And Its Effect On Our Lives
The author says, "Decades of study of media influence have shown one thing: the public's
awareness of and interest in a topic is directly related to the amount of attention that topic receives
in the media. In other words, the mass media affect what subjects people think about. However, it
has not been shown that the media influence just how people think about these topics" (Mass
Media). Have you ever wondered how much mass media can affect your life without knowing it?
Mass media are not only important because they're very powerful but how their influence can effect

Uttara Manohar agrees that, "We humans are a bunch of manipulate species where the media feeds

Amber alert can caution millions to any serious activities of child–abduction. With a touch of a
finger through smartphones, this alert system activates an urgent bulletin to galvanize the
community for assistance and safety. Today, mass media has undergone a significant change in
terms of how they reach out to the public. During the early 19th century, the dominant form of
media was the printing press through newspapers, magazines, and books. Eventually, the late 19th
century throughout the 20th century, broadcast media provided easier access for entertainment,
political issues, and current events gathering families around the radio. Now, TV and the Internet are
the most impactful type of informer as well as an efficient way to notify the users. Mass media

react less force. And the two cricket ball it about 156g and for the two ball bounce back distance is
36cm which is much more higher than the hand ball and the tennis ball this is because the with the
heavy mass would be having more force and the tennis ball will easily pushed away. So this is

Mass Customisation in Architecture
Introduction
Mass customisation implies a relationship between an individual and the production process.
For mass production to occur a process must be created which aims to fabricate a product in the
easiest and the least redundant way. This process is highly designed to create products which are
virtually identical in mass quantities (Image 01.1). The final outcome caters to the product rather
than to the individual. A process, on the other hand, which allows for a product to be produced
based on the needs and wants of the individual requires a link to be created between the person and
the system. (Image 01.2) For this relationship to exist, the individual must have a knowledge of the

Extrusion moulding, additive fabrication and water jet cutting are the three production methods
which this project will explore in the context of a joint at an architecturally viable scale. In
architecture, joinery exists in wood work and metal and is intended to create a connection between
separate elements. For example a lap joint in wood work or welding, or a metal t–plate are intend to
be static joint details which can bring together multiple elements. The ball and socket joint,
however, is a joint type which does connect separate elements, but allows for movement among
them. This can be utilised to create structures which can withstand forces acting from various
angles, or structures which can be dismantled, folded and transported. Thus exploring the ball and
socket joint which is a natural or manufactured joint or coupling in which a partially spherical end
lies in a socket, allowing multidirectional movement and rotation, will allow me to explore these
fabrication methods to their greatest capabilities.
Extrusion Molding
Extrusion molding is recognized as a process of pushing a malleable material, sensitive to heat,
through a plate with a predefined void. As the material is pushed through the die, it takes on the
shape of the void and therefor an object is created with a continuous cross

When I recently decided to watch the latest reality TV show, I was surprised at how drained and
listless I felt afterwards. Apart from the dreary, unintelligible show's content; the lethargic state was
simply the effect of the screen experience on a human body. You don't notice it until you've fasted
from visual media for a good long while, but it is powerful. It's a completely different feeling from
finishing a book, or coming inside from gardening, or sitting around a table after a good meal. It

The screen is a strange thing. It takes our minds and turns them from active filters into passive

These are the logical human responses to such stimuli, and the producers not only know it – they

15. The Effect Of A Trebuchet Arm Length And Counterweight...
Effect of a Trebuchet Arm Length or Counterweight Mass on Projectile Distance A trebuchet is a
siege weapon most commonly used in the middle ages. It uses gravity to propel an object. There are
competitions held today called "Pumpkin Chunkin '" which use trebuchets to launch pumpkins as far
as possible. The common question is what the dimensions should be when making it. Should the
arm be longer or shorter? Should the counterweight be heavier or lighter? These questions have
been asked by competitors in trebuchet competition as well as engineers. And this is why the project
is in the field of mechanical engineering. The way a Trebuchet works is that a counter weight drops
which pulls the arm forward and at the point of takeoff a pin releases the object that is being
projected. The counterweight drops using gravity and is attached to the arm causing it to fly up and
launch the object. Engineers have had previous experience in this field because of the world wide
trebuchet launching competitions. One example of engineers making this trebuchet are the engineers
from team NASAW in the Pumpkin Chunkin ' competition. Team NASAW has a trebuchet with a
heavy weight and a long arm. There arm and weight start next to each other at the beginning. The
weight drops forward and like a whip the arm swings around and fires the pumpkin into the air at
insane speeds. They are one of the top competitors in the competition and have proven countless
times that the design works wonderfully.

16. Effects of Mass Media's Ideal of Thinness
In today's day and age, more and more individuals are changing their perspectives to match that of
the media's current ideals. Concern over the media's influence on body image has recently risen,
striking the notion that many people regard the images shown throughout media as 'real'. However,
unbeknownst to them, such unbelievably thin body types are not quite attainable in reality, and
therefore, individuals' own beauty ideals and body images become unrealistic. The mass media's
ideal image of thinness has greatly impacted the overall body image of today, and has been linked to
negative consequences such as appearance dissatisfaction, eating disorders, and depression. Society
is suddenly spiraling down into a dark chasm of which it may not be able to escape. Unrealistically
thin models and actors are often spotted on television screens, leaving individuals all over drowning
in their own envy. Ridiculously small figures are found in many films, plastered across the internet,
and even strutting down the red carpet. Magazines are suddenly bombarding its readers with articles

career, and an overall happy life. Unfortunately, many people – especially the young minds of whom

A mass media effect, as defined by W.J. Potter (2011), is "a change in an outcome within a person or
social entity that is due to mass media influence following exposure to a mass media message or
series of messages" (p. 903). Simply put, this is when a medium – in this essay, a motion picture –
changes an individual's or group of individuals' cognitions, attitudes, beliefs, affects, physiology or
behaviors. Since its conception, film has been used as a way to entertain, educate, or influence the

18. Mass Media Bias And Its Effect On The Media
Having control over an entire country's population's opinion is a powerful thing to have. Possessing
that control would allow you to direct how the population spends their money or even who they like
and dislike in politics. The mainstream media news outlets have this control and are expected to
give us information that is unbiased, fair, and not meant to sway our opinion. The topic I will be
exploring is bias in the mainstream news media and how it effects their viewers. This is an
important topic in the field of communication because it has such a great impact on any country that
uses mass media to disseminate information. The information can be given to the viewers with a
certain twist to intentionally shape their view of an event, or it can be unintentionally bias just by
the tone and manner they are reporting on the event. I am going to research how mass media news
outlets influence the viewers opinion, and what goes in to picking the news stories covered. These
are controversial topics to get into, but important to consider. They can have a very big impact on
things like elections for a political office, support or dislike of a certain group, or can sway your
opinion of who is the hero in a certain story. My sources will need to show specific examples of
how the media is biased towards one opinion, what the effects are from this are, and who makes the
determines the bias that is being displayed.

Mass media is part of the average persons everyday life, from morning to night; modern society
absorbs and consumes it constantly. Adults are aware of it and see the media, as advertisements on
television, the latest blockbuster at the theaters or the trendy new clothing. Children are not free
from it either; they to are exposed to the medias imagery and ideals maybe more than adults are.
Parents may not pay close attention to the media their children are exposed to; adults may think they

Parents might think that the idea of their 5–year–old girl dieting as too farfetched, but that same thin
ideal is already being pushed on them. In fact, children who watch hours of television a day are
exposed to dieting, and may see it as a part of growing up. "Heavier–viewing children may
glamorize dieting and view it as a way of 'playing grown–up' before they begin to diet with the
intention of meeting an internalized body ideal." (Harrison et al) Children are very receptive to these
images, they may see dieting as just a grown up thing now, but later on may see it as a necessary
part of growing up. If children can catch on to things like that, then they can certainty catch on to
things like the thin ideal. An experiment was done where preschool aged girls were given a choice
between playing with three different game pieces, a fat one, a normal one, and a thin game piece;
this was what the researchers discovered. "Preschool girls between the ages of 3 and 5 attribute

20. Mass Media And Its Effect On Children
One of the biggest change in social environments today is the advance and increase usage of mass
media. The mass media parent the children of today. Consequently, radio, video games, television,
movies, videos, phones, and social networks play a significant role in their upbringing. For, they
assist in influencing a child's values, beliefs, and behaviors. Children rather unconsciously heed and
imitate the images exhibited, for example, in television, they learn the appropriate way to comport
and one's countenance. Electronic mass media, in particular, contains an element that is harmful to
children's psychological being which is violence. Others argue that exposure to the commonly
favored aggressive media are rather healthy for children in the way it allows them to express their
belligerent side virtually and also enhance their confidence and creativity. However it 's a struggle
for parents, they lose the battle regarding how much of aggressive media can their children consume
since children have access to them everywhere. Evidently exposure to violence in video games,

Allyson Wells Effects of Mass Media In this day and age, most anyone can find out just about
anything, on any subject, at any time with just a few clicks of a button. The act of gathering
information used to be a much more tedious and physical endeavor. However, these days it can be
done with ease thanks to the enormous developments in mass media distribution over the last
century. The major mode of information distribution has went from mostly print to internet and
everything in between. The amount of people reached has grown dramatically from a few hundred
to millions in an instant.
Major Developments Mass production was one of the first major developments that led the charge
to the emergence of mass media. The ability to print thousands of copies in print made it possible to
reach a higher population in a shorter amount of time. This made keeping up with current events
much easier for the public. Another major development in the emergence of mass media was the
invention of television. Television brought about news programs, reality programs, and product
commercials along with many other types of informational programs. People did not even have to
step outside their door anymore in order to find out what was going on in the world. In today's
world, the majority of homes have at least one television set. People can catch up on current events,

22. The Effects Of Mass Media Coverage On Society
Throughout history, mass media coverage, which is most common in developed nations, has been a
key benefactor, among several factors, that has influenced science, public policy, knowledge, and
aptitude. A poll conducted by the Pew Research Center for the People and Press found in the United
States that television ranks number one as the leading source of daily news followed by newspapers,
radio, and the internet. Knowledge has never been so easily accessible than it is now, with the latest
news being available to us, whenever and usually wherever. We are able to communicate with others
on opposite hemispheres and learn about another country's values and customs without actually
going there. Regrettably, due to the media's extensiveness and accessibility it inevitably bears
certain problems as it reports information that is inadequate or creates bias. As a society, we should
rethink some opinions and investigate numerous perspectives before making judgments in order to
avoid prejudice.
An intimidating ordeal that has received much attention in the media is climate change caused by
global warming. Global warming is a gradual rise in the general temperature of earth's atmosphere
due to the greenhouse effect, which is caused by increasing carbon dioxide levels,
chlorofluorocarbons, and other pollutants. The greenhouse effect occurs when solar radiation that
should be reflected back into space, instead becomes trapped in the atmosphere because of the
accumulation of greenhouse

Where do we get our information in society? How do we know what is true information from false
information? Mass media, including T.V, Radio stations, newspaper has taken over the minds of
people in society. According to Glen Smith and Kathleen Searles, Most assumption are being based
off of what they see and hear on the television, social networks and on the radio because its mainly
one side stories or one bashing of individuals. People do not take the time to go in–depth about the
situation being inaccurately displayed at times. Sociologist is beginning to realize the effect of mass
media has on society especially the younger generation.
REVIEW OF LITERATURE
Patrick Daley explained from a sociology point of view that Ferrarotti's believe society has lost the
essence to communicate with each other face to face; our expressive world is no longer there.
Ferrarotti's argued, " We are losing our ability to produce meaning, to the massive out pouring of
images from television. Television also annihilates history; Frerrarotti maintains, by giving us an
unremitting stream of disconnected and episodic event." This goes to show that media definitely has
control of our minds. They showcase what they want the people to see and have judgment on. Even
fashion or the way they portray women and men, has become a money–making business because of
the way media has made it into a need and not a want. People now believe that they have to be slim

Mass Media and Its Effects on Society
Sudden introduction of mass media into society undoubtedly caused a shift in societal views and
behaviors, evident from the vast amount of research that started as soon as television and other
sources became available in households worldwide. Mass media constitutes anything that helps
reach a mass audience such as television, newspaper, radio, social media, and even video games.
Merriam–Webster dictionary defines a mass medium as "a medium of communication that is
designed to reach the mass of the people – usually used in plural,". From building a dependency on
mass media, to changing the way some children and young adults behave, mass media has played
and continues to play a massive role in shaping today's society.
It is important to first note the exact magnitude of media today. According to the AC
Nielsen company, the 2016–17 television season will consist of 118.4 million TV homes in
America. Those households include 301.7 million people above the age of two years old.
Nielsen (or Nielsen Holdings) is a global information data and measurement company. In
September of 2017, records showed the largest consumption of mass media ever. Those who
consume television, on average, consumed 238 minutes a day (Statista, 2017). From those same

27. The Effects Of Mass Media On American Culture
Effects of Mass Media Introduction
Why is mass media influencing the American culture? This is what we are going to be discussing in
this essay. It's important that we understand where the media has come from and where it is now and
the journey that it is taking the American culture in the last century. America has now explored what
un–traditional media and it has a major impact on the culture called new media.
What were the major developments in the evolution of mass media during the last century?
There has been a major evolution in the mass media in the last century; we have print media, and
broadcast media. In recent years, there has been a lot of changes in the media that has more of an
impact on informing people of what is going on in the news or/and just the trending topics that is
getting people talking. Social media have been taking the spotlight when it comes to the media there
are many different reasons why such as; Cost "Here are almost no barriers to entry in creating or
distributing social media content. Or put another way, beyond your time and production costs, it's
almost free" (Mainwaring, 2010), Targeting audience has become even easier especially with
hashtags that target buyers and/or readers. Social media has better ways of reaching their audience,

28. The Effect Of Mass Media On The Politics Of The United States
Influence of Mass Media on the Politics of the United States Mass media can be a powerful tool, but
it can also be a hindrance to the public if the facts are not checked. From the invention of the
printing press, radio, television, and the internet mass media has revolutionized the way the public
gathers information each and every day. Many of the sources we use for gaining knowledge and
facts on current events today are controlled by a very small group. This small group controls many
of the ideologies that drive our political system in the United States. The major political parties are
highly affected by the information that is reported as facts on a daily base. A famous quote by
Ronald Reagan comes to mind, "trust, but verify" and this could not be truer today when most of the
public depend on mass media for the vast majority of their information. In America today most of
the American citizens receive their news about political matters by some form of mass media. The
American public assumes that the information they receive from newspapers, radio, television, and
the internet has been researched and the reports they receive are based on facts; however, their
expectation of the news to be reported in a fair and unbiased way is an unrealistic expectation.

90% of what we read, watch, or listen to" every day on mass media. These media giants include

Mass media has inched its way into almost every facet of our daily lives. No one feels this intrusion
more so than women. The market is geared towards them as the biggest consumer in our society. As
a woman I am aware of this fact, but not only am I a woman, I am a woman who works in the
advertising business. I have a unique perspective on both sides of the spectrum. How does all this
focus effect us? How does this attention effect the way we perceive ourselves? Is it harmful? Can it
be helpful? These are the question I am going to answer the best I can today. The written word goes
back over three thousand years ago and advertising on a basic level followed, but it wasn't until
1877 when Thomas Edison invented the phonograph did it come into our homes. This "marked the
beginning of the first new mass medium since print." (Hoynes, 2014) From phonograph records to
LP's and later on the cinematography mass media was growing and reaching new heights. With the
help of these inventions the radio became an important and useful tool in advertising and
communication. Information could be delivered in minutes and instead of having to sell newspapers
and magazines one could tune into their favorite radio program and get all the information about the
happenings of the world right in their own living room. "On November 2, 1920, station KDKA

On December 4th 2012, Adam Lanza mercilessly shot dead twenty children and six adult staff
members at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut. Various news reports
suggested that Lanza regularly played violent video games. Connecticut Senator Christopher
Murphy stated in January 2013 that "As well as guns, violent video games were also a key
contributor, giving him a false sense of courage about what he could do that day." Violence in the
media is a key issue in today's society, a survey conducted on Sunday the 16th of Feb over social
media by myself found that 91% of the surveyed 51 people do own some sort of gaming console
and that 100% of them have a television. Violent games are usually the best selling and almost all
games and movies have some element of violence in them. Whilst it isn't popular culture to be
violent, violence is certainly a by–product of popular games, mainstream music and other types of
media.
Teenagers are one of the major groups targeted by mass–media, more specifically video game
companies, moviemakers and television programs. They are old enough to understand double
innuendos and underlying concepts yet young enough to appreciate animated and younger films.
This makes them a prime audience for most media outlets.

car. A clear decline in the average acceleration occurs as the total mass of the car increases.
1. The mass of an object directly affects the acceleration. The more mass an object has, the more the
acceleration decreases. For example, when the car had 3 weights on it and weighed 1,457.9 grams,
the average acceleration was 0.4116 m/s². When the car did not have any weights on it and weighed
653.7 grams, the average acceleration was 0.8771 m/s², which is more than double the acceleration
of the car had 3 weights on it. When an extra 804.2 grams of weight was added to the car, the

32. Effects Of Mass Media On Teenagers
Effect of Mass Media on Teenagers
Mass media has profound effects on the psychosocial development of the teenagers. It is the age
when it becomes rather hard to control the children and their behavior. It is also the time when they
get exposed to wider world. The media has been diversified so much that some of the channels and
magazines are operating solely for the teenagers. They base entirety of their content on the needs
and interests of the youth. While the aforementioned group may not be the previous generation of
baby boomers any more, their numbers are still high enough to make a decent profit.
One of the better examples to illustrate this is the music industry. With more and more entertainment
being aimed at the teenagers, it is no surprise that they spend more than most other groups of people
on music (Nielsen Study 2013). However, the main problem here lies in the fact that a lot of the
music aimed at teenagers encourages risky behavior like alcohol consumption, drug taking or
intimate relationships. Songs often have rather suggestive lyrics or the TV shows offer risqué
images. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Usually, the regulators make sure that popular media channels always contain information about

society is developing much faster spiritually than any of the previous generations and one of the
main reasons is the mass media. A great example is death sentence, which is being outlawed in more
and more places (Amnesty International, 2013). Furthermore, tolerance for homosexuals has also
increased. The younger generations are ready to accept gay rights as their equals. One of the major
reasons has to be the huge increase of the number of reports about the subject in the entertainment
industry. More and more countries accept their weddings as a regular part of the lifestyle, which

33. Causes And Effects Of Mass Shootings In The United States
In 1999, two students from Columbine High School planned an attack in which they killed 20
students and one adult with three injured. In 2007, the second deadliest shooting event, took place at
Virginia Tech with 32 dead. In 2012, Adam Lanza shot 20 children and 6 adults in the horrific event
known as the Sandy Hook Elementary School Shooting. More recently in 2016 a shooting took
place in an Orlando nightclub, Pulse, where 49 people were killed and 58 people were injured.
According to the Gun Violence Archive (GVA), a non–profit organization that supplies people with
refutable statistics about gun violence, a mass shooting is any event in which a gunman shoots more
than four people in the same general time and location. As stated by the GVA, there has been 273
mass shootings in 2017 alone. This means that there has been an average of 7.5 mass shootings a
week, which indicates that at least four or more people were either killed or injured every day from
January to October. Seventeen of the deadliest mass shootings in history of the US happened in the
past decade. The US is now the country that mass shootings are affiliated with; America take credit
for only 5% of the world's population but takes responsibility of 31% of the world's mass shootings.
How these tragedies occur and what causes them is the topic that arises as an effect of these
shootings. Most parents do not worry about whether their kids will grow up to be psychopaths,
sociopaths, or mass shooters. They also do not worry about how the media their children are
exposed to will affect them. Moreover, these parents are more likely to be concerned with how their
children interact with other kids and other family members. Day–to–day social interactions just
seem more important. All kids throw aggressive temper tantrums but that does not mean they are
capable of being violent. We recognize that there are outside influences that lead to an individual's
aggression but we rarely acknowledge that aggression may correlate with violent media.
For years now, researches have been studying the correlation between violent media and the
aggression in children. Undoubtedly the conclusion is that violent media does indeed increase the
aggressive nature in kids.

This results to development of eating disorder. Mass media tends to dictate various aspects
including the ideal image or the definition of beauty. Children blindly imitate the glamour models
portrayed in mass media without being careful enough to differentiate between wrong and right.
Several young girls have developed self–esteem issues due to failure to match up to the image and
beauty standards dictated by the media (Page & Evra, 2004).
A negative effect of mass media that is worth noting is with respect to sexuality. Mass media may
prompt children to engage in sexual activities at an early age. Research has indicated that children
are exposed to approximately 14, 000 sexual references annually in televisions. Out of these
references, only 150 of them address issues of abstinence, sexual responsibility, or contraception
(Preiss, 2007). This implies that sex is portrayed as a fun activity, which prompts children to have an
urge to try it out. Overexposure to sexual content in videos, games and television programming is
strongly linked to increasing rates of teen pregnancies. A similar case applies to substance abuse,
which is highly depicted in movies that children watch. Out of curiosity, such children begin trying
out different illegal drugs and substances seen in media sources.
Positive Social Effects of Mass Media
Despite the mentioned negative effects, there are a number of positive social effects of mass media
on children.

Shepard as Teen Hero? The Mass Effect Trilogy as a Teen Epic
Among the various questions that adults may think of when considering teenagers as video game
players, one that can easily plague the debate about appropriateness of video games is the question:
why do teenagers want to play "mature" rated games? Is it the possibility of sexual content within
the game data? Is it the violence that serves as the primary gameplay for many of these games? Is it
the simple association with the word "mature" that acts as the game rating? As pertinent as these
questions may be, particularly to parents or teachers who fear the negative effects of video games, I
choose to ask something completely different: what if the story, rather than being an adult or
"mature" story, is actually a teen story that draws these teen players into the game? This paper,
which is very preliminary in this investigation, but will hopefully develop into a series of papers
looking at various video games, will investigate the ways that the Mass Effect trilogy does in fact
put a teen story within the adult package of a "mature" rated video game. Rather than attempting to
definitively answer my initial underlying question with sales and playtime data of teen versus adult
players, I will consider the ways that the story of Mass Effect falls in line with existing teen
narratives, particularly the Bildungsroman. This will be achieved by looking at Commander
Shepard, the adult protagonist of the trilogy, as a teen

36. Negative Effects Of Mass Media
The Negative Effects of Mass Media Mass media surrounds the lives of our global society. Dating
back to centuries, the media is prominent through the modes of television, internet, and paper press.
Media is the main means of mass communication in the twenty–first century, and is the central
source of information for the general public. A new form of media, social media, has gained
popularity in recent years. The First social media platform was born in 1997 with the launch of the
first social media site, Six Degrees, a site meant to connect people worldwide. By the year 2000,
nearly one–hundred million people gained access to the internet, which resulted in more people
becoming active on social media sites. Six Degrees worked as a foundation for other social media
like: myspace, facebook, twitter, instagram, and snapchat. Mass media negatively impacts students,
politics, and incites racial tensions in society today. Media today is faulty and brainwashes students.
A study found that, "If the children are the future, the future might be very ill–informed"
(Domonoske). Domonoske claims that the news feeds untrue and biased information to students;
these students of today's society will grow up to be the future. It is imperative that students receive
true and reputable information from the media. If they are not now, well informed, then a society
filled with uneducated individuals will reside. Malinformation generates arguments that can become
more serious and turn into a much bigger problem. To avoid this, highly intellectual people must
attempt to find a way for students to be well informed. Researches have taken the time to study the
influence media has on students. In a recent study, "Stanford researchers that evaluated students'
ability to assess information sources and described the results as "dismaying," "bleak" and "[a]
threat to democracy" (Domonoske). The study proved that students do not know how to determine
fake from real information. If there is no way for students to receive true and unbiased information
from news sources then they should develop the skills to assess any material presented to them.

37. Negative Effects Of Mass Media
Does the media negatively affect our thinking? Steven Pinker (2011) explains in his article "Mind
Over Mass Media" that the media does not have negative effects on our intelligence. He argues that
because of media and technology, our intelligence increased at high levels. The media has created
many benefits and opportunities of empowerment for people across the world; I believe that with
self–control and non–habit forming behaviors, technology could be the only thing that will continue
to keep us advanced and intelligent, without harming our intellect.
Steven Pinker (2011), a psychology professor at Harvard University, published his article "Mind
Over Mass Media" in the New York Times in 2010. His article examines how the use of technology
affects our thinking abilities; he argues a very debatable subject for media critics. For years, media
critics have panicked because of each type new media that has emerged; "the printing press,
newspapers, paperbacks and television were all once denounced as threats to consumers' brainpower
and moral fiber" (Pinker, 2011, p. 172). Most of the panics that these media critics create fail and
ultimately end up being ignored because even with the years of technology, our IQs have only risen.
For Pinker to prove his point that media does not affect our intelligence, he uses scientists as an
example. He explains that science requires "high levels of brainwork and is measured by clear
benchmarks of discovery" (Pinker, 2011, p. 172). Scientists

Mass Media Society embraces the systems and symbols created to communicate in the search of
belonging. The systems and symbols are used to convey information and assigns meaning and
values to our lives. Often culture is defined as the symbols society uses to express themselves as
individuals or groups. Culture is the practice that allows individuals to either agree or disagree with
the values and ideas that are portrayed and communication helps to circulate these values. There
have been major developments in the progression of communication and how information is
conveyed in culture during the last century. Societies shared information and meaning orally in the
beginning. Information was slowly passed to others by the word of mouth, by teachers, poets, and
the telling of stories in tribal societies. The alphabet and the use of written words was passed down
by monks, stenographers, and philosophers. This soon became the most excepted form of
communication and was used by the rulers. Others felt that not having that face–to–face would

The Effects of Mass Media Mass media is the most effective way for a person or company to
communicate to the masses. People with powerful positions in large and influential companies and
corporations have historically used this to push their own personal agendas. It is also well known for
politicians to push the agendas of their political parties through the use of mass media. This is what
we call bias, having an impartial media is biased and this leads to either glorified pieces or the
complete ignorance on topics they do not agree with. The origins of mass media begin in the 1920's,
mass media was generally confined to print media until the post–Second World War. After World
War 2 the use of radio, television and video was introduced to the widespread public, which led to
the expansion of mass media. What is the purpose of mass media? It introduces an individual to
advertising, journalism and broadcasting through various sources. Through the exposure it gives,
individuals are shown images and messages to identify and analyze. What is the role mass media
plays? It is communication through various sources that reaches a large audience. The level of
media saturation today has not always existed and can have a lot larger affect today than it did 50

This wave lead to many other cultural changes and has brought us to where males and females
experience equal pressure from media expectations. Men and women are also now seen as equals in
almost every spectrum of society, but the key word is "almost", as there are still current issues
regarding gender equality today. Females are still scene as miss treated and under appreciated by
large portions of the United States and even more so in other parts of the world. But why is this still
an issue, and why hasn't it been fixed? No matter what gender you are, whether you choose to
