2. Cinematography
A lot of different shot types are used in this opening. The first shot shown in this opening is
a close up of a book and the pages are turning over. This allows the audience to
understand that the book has some sort of history.
Another type of shot used in the opening a lot is extreme close up shots. The first extreme
close up shot is of someone holding something which appears to look dangerous. The
persons hands are shown to be dirty which leaves an enigma as the audience would
wonder why are his hands dirty and why is he holding something that looks dangerous.
The extreme close up shots create mysteriousness as the audience will be interested also
and want to see the whole scene and will be drawn in.
3. Mise En Scene
The lighting in this opening is shown to be dark which creates mysteriousness and is a
genre signifier as the setting is dark. The props such as small dangerous things, the books,
and the photos shows the audience that the rest of the film is going to show a lot of history
which involve all them things. The opening doesn’t show any characters but shows a
mans hands which leaves the audience to wonder who he is.
Editing
The editing in this film opening is shown to start of slow whilst the pages are turning, after
the first title appears, another shot is shown then the rest of the shots change fast. The fast
pace shots allows the audience to get a glimpse of everything in the shots. After the actual
film title is shown, the editing goes back to normal speed.
Sound
The sound used in the opening is loud, tension building and mysterious. There are sound
effects used of scratching, scream like noise. This is a genre signifier as it creates suspense
for the audience.
