Paul film opening analysis
1. Paul Film opening analysis
The movie begins with ominous music in the background over the top of the
radio, this creates an eerie environmentfor the audience. The dog barking and
scratching to get out also revamps this feeling as the audience wonders why he
wants to go out so much. There is a bright yellow shinefrom the sky, this is an
enigma code as the audience don’tknow what it is. The yellow shine reveals
the little girls face and her shocked facial expression tells the audience that the
yellow glow is something terrifying. In the dogs eyes there is a yellow spiralling
circle coming hurtling towards him, it then reveals that it is a UFO and it
crashes, thereis the sound of a dog whimpering which tells the audience the
UFO killed the dog. There is then a graphic match as the light from the UFO
carries over into the light fromthe lightbulb, it is a sealed door and reveals the
name of the film, ‘Paul.’
Simon Pegg and Nick Frostare then seen surrounded by a bunch of people
dressed up in nerdy outfits. The sightof these two in a movie together already
let the audience know this is a comedy of similar fashion to movies like Shaun
of the dead and The Worlds End. This is because these two have extremely
similar humour and they work really well together. They don’t look particularly
cool looking and them surrounded by nerds trying to stand out is humorous to
the audience as they both simultaneously make fun of the people around
them, this is then backed up by more humour when they are seen following
the nerds into California Comic-Con. This shows although they weren’t
impressed with the outfits they are any cooler than then people they are with.
They are then seen going around Comic-Con with the others and having a great
time, they love it and are constantly smiling. The music dies down and Simon
Pegg says “I loveit here… it feels so.” And then Nick Frostfinishes his sentence
saying “right.” They agree and they both really fit in and enjoy the atmosphere
of conventions. The shows theaudience whatthe characters areinterested in
and that they sharesimilarities, this also suggests thatsome of the things
represented in the small montage will feature throughoutthe movie, things
such as the alien and car.
There are many genresignifiers, the typical adults who don’tact their age and
are immature for their age and almost childlike. This is seen in other movies
such as Grown Ups and Grown Ups 2. This is also evident as it is Simon Pegg
and Nick Frost, thesetwo actors are in many films and TV shows together and
2. are both very similar and work together a lot. Their humour compliments each
other and they fit in well as a double, this is because of the style of comedic
value they include in their movies and how they reach a wide variety of people
in their audiences. The styleof humour is for all audiences, kids and adults
however somejokes and punchlines are focused on the older demographic.
