Paramore is an American rock band currently consisting of vocalist Hayley Williams, bassist Jeremy Davis, and guitarist Taylor York. Previously, twins Josh and Zac Farro were also members until departing in 2010. The band's image and music were originally darker to fit the rock genre. However, their record label Fueled by Ramen focused more on sexualizing Hayley Williams as the only female member to appeal to audiences. Hayley's hair, makeup, and appearance changed in each music video to further this sexualization, while the other band members received less focus. Paramore uses open outdoor spaces in their music videos to allow performance aspects to be featured prominently. This marketing strategy helped establish them in different genres
Paramore's Image and Promotion Strategies Over Time
1.
2. Paramore is an American Rock band currently consisting of vocalist Hayley Williams,
bassist Jeremy Davis and Guitarist Taylor York . They previously had twins Josh(Lead
guitarist) and Zac Farro (Drummer) in the band until the brothers departure of the band
in 2010. Before the departure of the brothers, their overall music and image were that of
a connoted rock band, all black clothing for the band or all styled similarly. This is
however overshadowed a lot in Paramore’s videos because there’s not as much focus on
the other band members than there is on Hayley. This is because as the only female in
the band, the record label Fueled By Ramen feel as if focusing and sexualising Hayley
would appeal better to their audience.
3. As a whole, Paramore doesn’t put much effort into hair and make-up that strictly including
the male members as for Hayley, her hair changes colour and shape every video and she
wears quite a bit of make-up. This includes: foundation, eyeliner, mascara, blusher and
bronzer. This continues the idea to sexualise Hayley to appeal to their audience and
wider. The three screen grabs down below are examples of Hayley’s recurring changes
of hair and make-up. The screen grab to the left comes from the video
“crushcrushcrush” made in 2007, the middle screen grab comes from “Still Into You”
made in 2013 and the screen grab to the right is from “The Only Exception” made in
2010.
4. Paramore use a variety of settings in their music videos. A prominent feature of these
settings are the open space that they have for the performance aspect of the music
video. For example in the video “crushcrushcrush”(2007), the band are performing in
what seems to be a open desert and the same goes for their song “Decode’(2009) but
instead they’re performing in a forest, however this is because of the intertextuality
within the video as it is referencing the film Twilight which is ironic because the song
was specifically made to be featured in the film’s soundtrack. This helps to market
Paramore as they are suited for anything whether it be serious or light-hearted. “Ain’t it
fun” and “Still into you” are great examples on how light-hearted and fun Paramore can
be.
5. Paramore are somewhat active on YouTube more so than most other artists.
Their music videos and behind the scenes are on their niche record label’s
YouTube channel “Fueled by Ramen” while they have their own YouTube
channel “Paramore” for tour insights and other miscellaneous activities. This
goes against the norm as most artists nowadays have “Vevo” channels
where everything music related is put up on their own Vevo channel. Also the
music videos that “Vevo” channels put up, are some of the most viewed
videos on YouTube so for a popular band like Paramore to not have one
shows that they want to be more interactive with their audience which is a
great promotional tool.
6. YouTube comments overall can be very random, harsh, argumentative but also kind. To
some people, they wouldn’t watch a video at all if it has a lot of negative comments and
a lot of dislikes. For Paramore, the comments below mostly consist of people saying
how pretty or beautiful Hayley Williams is but also how people like Paramore’s music as
well as the occasional “I prefer their old music” or “this is s**t” comments. Paramore’s
main audience consist of ages between 16-24 year olds that like rock music, but in
recent music that Paramore release it seems that they are broadening their audience to
involve people that like modern age pop. It is also a dominant male demographic that
like Paramore but that could be because of Hayley Williams and how sexualised she is
within the band.
