1. FLORENCE AND THE MACHINE RABBIT HEART - FROM THE ALBUM ‘LUNGS’ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hHqbco0zHWo&feature=fvst The release for Florence and the Machines album ‘Lungs’ features a detailed front cover with a large centre image of the artist. I think this front album cover appeals to more of an arty/indie audience ranging from the ages 16- late 20’s. This album was Florence and the Machines big break onto the music scene , ‘Lungs’ has been her first major album, which a wide audience has paid attention to. The cover behind looks more like an artists painting, with small detailed flowers and birds, this could represent mainly girly things. The main image also looks like a painting rather than a photo. An interesting contrast is created from a realistic picture of Florence through to an unrealistic image of her lungs within her chest. The image used may suggest Florence is more of a gentle, down to earth artist. The album is in full colour but cold tones, yet the title stands out against the black background of the border. A mid shot is used of the artist, this establishes her outfit and appearance in general. The layout of the CD is simple, the title of the album doesn't appear to stand out unlike other album covers, in contrast it blends in instead. The name of the artist is in an almost scrawly type of writing, as though it has been handwritten. This could show that Florence has a unique and different style, it could also show she isnt stereotypical, unlike other artists. The album seems creative and quirky. The image is definitely eye catching and even from looking at the cover I would definitely be interested in giving the album a listen. Florence and the machine- Rabbit heart. Florence and the machine begins her video with a close up shot of her face, this establishes the artist of the song. The camera work is unsteady, as though it has been deliberately made to look like more of a home-made video, rather than a professional one. The video is mainly narrative and concept based with no elements of live performance. A short story relates to the video and small links appear throughout, although if you don’t know the story, then the links don’t seem as obvious. A particularly outstanding shot used, is a mid four shot of four people lined across a table, Florence is positioned in the middle pulling an almost bewildered pose. The story is about sacrificing a girls innocence, and some shots used resemble this , such as a close up shot of a pigs head amongst people sitting at a white table. The pigs head links to death and the white links towards innocence. The mise en scene is unusual compared to other music videos. It is set amongst woods which appear sunny, where as the theme of the video is quite dark and sinister. The ‘Rabbit heart’ video was Florence and the Machines biggest video to be released, even though the video has more of an artistic style, it sent Florence straight into number 12 of the UK singles chart. Florence and the machine targets an audience between the ages of around 17 to older adults, with an alternative/punk music taste. The video has an artistic and indie feel to it, which targets her younger audience. The edits used are dissolve, fade to white and jump cuts, which are all forms of transition to different scenes.
2. PARAMORE IGNORANCE- FROM THE ALBUM ‘BRAND NEW EYES’ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kqJEGIaQwP8 Paramore-IgnoranceParamore’s video opens with Hayley Williams(the main singer) being cramped with other band members in a small dark room. This sets the mise en scene, establishing the band and the location. The video appears concept and performance based, as though another hidden meaning is subtly being displayed. The camera work is steady and professional, along with jump cuts which move from image to image. A constant lightbulb is displayed in the video, as though the main singer is always in the spotlight. The video cuts between the band performing in a cramped little room, a larger performance area and Williams being laid bare in white clothes, hair pulled back etc.A good shot used is an almost low angle two shot, focusing mainly on the lightbulb which highlights the main singer and another band member. This could show that the main singer is trying to shine light on other band members, as she appears to get more media attention than them. The mise en scene gives almost a trapped feel to the video, as though each band member feels trapped in the media spotlight. Paramore were at medium success when the video was released, although the video appears to have no obvious story and in my opinion they have produced better. The video has an edgy style even though in parts it appears dark and sinister. The target audience towards Paramore appear to be teenagers aged 15-19 who mainly listen to emo/rock music. The video also links to the genre of music. Editing used makes the video appear faster than its filmed, which gives the video an overall jittery effect. Jump cuts and close ups are used frequently which makes the video appear fast moving, this also fits with the beat of the song. The front of the brand new eyes album by Paramore is very plain compared to other album covers. It features a plain, almost off colour white background which could resemble simplicity of the band. This subverts the stereotype of Paramore, as many people associate the band as being alot more ‘out there’, loud and outrageous than any other bands. The title is written, again, in script style writing , this doesn't necessarily specify the album. The band name is in a larger font which makes the title of the album appear smaller. But, the main focus on the album cover is the yellow butterfly which is eye catching and stands out in the middle. Only three main colours are used, black, yellow and grey. The black and yellow on the butterfly may represent or relate to the genre of music. The ariel shot of the butterfly shows attention to detail which could relate to the making of the album. Paramore released there first DVD displaying a live performance of there work on tour which proved to be a huge hit amongst there fans. The black and white photo creates a good contrast with the plain black background and the red title, this also relates to the genre Paramore are aiming at. The black and white photo has been taken from an audience point of view, even though it has been produced by a professional photographer. Its gives the fans a taste of what to expect from the DVD, it also makes the DVD look outrageous and unique as the band are in different poses. The main singer ‘Hayley williams’ is recognizable as the main singer, as she is the only girl in the band, which is why the creator of the DVD has placed her at the front of the line of four images, it immediately draws attention and highlights her first. The shots used are close up shots of the bands faces and each one of them have an instrument in the shot to show what they are playing and how they are playing it. The font used is a blood red, this puts a different and almost dark spin onto the DVD cover. Even though the DVD cover is plain, it is presented well and highlights all the right parts to make it stand out well.
3. DIZZEE RASCAL SIRENS- FROM THE ALBUM ‘SHOWTIME’ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IPpxxrl0xhM Dizzee Rascal has a unique looking album cover to start off. It looks plain and simple, but on the contrast the cover stands out alot. The cover gives the impression that Dizzee has eventually made his big break, as the cover has an almost ‘west end’ musical feel to it. He is standing in an almost arrogant pose, with casual clothing. The photo is a full length poised shot, which works well and blends in with the title. Dizzee Rascal appears creative yet laid back within the cover, this could appeal well to his target audience which are more of the younger range. The title is yellow and bold, almost like circus lights which go well against the black background. The red of his name and the red of his jacket stand out well against one another, this emphasises how important his presence is to the album cover. ‘SHOWTIME’ sounds important, and shows that he may of finally launched his career after long preparation, this relates to a circus or a west end show. This album was Dizzee Rascals main release which sent him into the music industry, the album establishes him well as a new and upcoming artist. Dizzee Rascal- SirensDizzee rascals video for sirens is loaded with vibrant imagery, he begins wearing a hooded jacket which you learn to realise is the centrepiece around the story. The mise en scene begins with a back yard garage which automatically sets the scene in an almost stereotypical way towards hooded teenagers. The shot is deliberately made dark which gives the video a dark cold edge. The video is all concept based, the only elements of performance are when Dizzee Rascal mimes the words. The short story the video is based on is the perception of young people in England, hence the hooded character Dizzee Rascal is playing within the video. The video targets status and class, this is showed through bold shots from a low angle, looking up at a red suited man on a white horse, This represents England and a foxhunt taking place towards teenagers. Dizzee Rascal is then chased amongst dark damp streets within England, which again links to class. The video is also set at night, this could show that many people also link teenagers to causing trouble at night to hide, rather than daytime. At this point, Dizzee Rascal was not such a large success compared to today, although this controversial video did progress his career. The video targets an opinion that Dizzee, himself, feels it needs to be voiced. In my opinion, the video is well presented and interesting to view. The target audience appears to be teenagers and older adults who listen to mainly rap music. Edits used are mainly jump cuts and slow motion shots. A bonus DVD features within the ‘showtime’ CD, this features clips of Dizzee rascals main videos and aspects of performance from his gigs. Dizzee Rascal connects with his audience in the pose he is placed in. With the shadow from the title and the 3d effect of him standing on a stage, it appears as though dizzee Rascal is ready to go and perform to an audience. The pose on Dizzee Rascals face is still serious which shows that he takes his music seriously, even though he appears to have an arrogant pose. The back of the album cover is very plain with no images. It displays bold writing on a black background which highlights the tracks listed. If i were to see this CD in a shop, I would probably buy it, the CD keeps the buyer in suspence as the front cover also gives nothing away.
4. BEYONCE SINGLE LADIES- TAKEN FROM THE ALBUM ‘I AM SASHA FIERCE’ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8mVEGfH4s5g ‘Single Ladies’ by Beyonce is one of her most iconic videos of all time. The simplicity of the video is loved by all lovers of the R’n’B genre and Beyonce fans. She created a party atmosphere within the video, which targets mainly a girl audience. The video is based on completely performance, it is simply just Beyonce dancing in a white room with two other girls. She stands out in the video as the video is also filmed in black and white which creates a contrast within the room. Mainly long shots and close ups are used, the long shots may be used to show the similarity of Beyonce and the two other dancers, or, on the other hand to show Beyonces figure. The video appears darker and lighter in different parts of the song, this varies the video instead of being a bright white background throughout. The video is individual and no other artist could achieve this apart from Beyonce, since she is such a huge success she creates a large impact upon the screen. She also creates a female version of the Micheal Jackson iconic ‘diamond glove’ although this one is made of metal, but it creates a trademark like figure within the video. The video also displays Beyonce as a perfectionist, as every small dance move is exactly how it should be. The song mainly acts upon a woman being single, and having a good time, Beyonce displays this in a subtle way within her video. Even though the video is very simple, you cant take your eyes off the screen as the dance routine is extremely fast and interesting. The main image on Beyonces album cover is a professionally photographed black and white photo which is extremely eye catching, it attracts attention to the album which has a bold title and statement reading ‘I AM SASHA FIERCE’. The target audience will be immediatly attracted to this cover, as it displays her work and image. The audience could be young males and females who enjoy R’n’B music. The image also focuses on how naturally beautiful Beyonce is, it could be implying shes a good role model for her younger fans. Her hair is scraped back and the only noticeable thing on the image is a small piece of jewellery which has small crosses on it, this could represent something religious or something personal to her. The image uses different tones, like the dark shade of her hair and cheekbones, it creates definition in comparison to the plain white background. Beyonces DVD cover automatically links to a different artist, the first thing i noticed about the cover was that the outfit has a striking link to the same outfits of Lady Gaga. The outfit she is wearing is unusual and eye catching, which only someone like Beyonce could wear and pull off. The long shot gives her a powerful image, especially with her arms outstretched across the page. This could show Beyonce as a role model for the younger audience again, or in general just a very powerful and strong solo artist. There is a black and white theme throughout the main part of her album and DVD cover, this could represent a change in her life, maybe making it more simple. The picture is bold and recognizeable, so if you were to see the album and DVD cover you would automatically think ‘that is Beyonce.’
5. GIRLS ALOUD http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S76h0ZpTXbg The Promise video by Girls Aloud automatically sets the scene with costumes and mise en scene. The girls are dressed in sixties style outfits, with hair and makeup to a perfection. The girls are placed in stunning gold dresses, almost looking like china dolls. The performance aspect is set in black and white which creates an old film style theme. Where as the narrative side of the video is in colour in a sixties style car park with each girl looking equally pretty. The target audience could be young girls, girls aloud are set out to be role models, each and every girl wants to be them. Mainly long shots are used in the performance shots, this is too display the girls figures which relates to Goodwins music theory of the admiration of the female body. Close up shots are used on the girls faces, this could show there reactions and emotions to the video. The video uses no special effects but appears very posed, unlike natural videos. The genre is pop and you can tell from some of the characteristics used, such as a small dance routine to the music. The promise video is also iconic, if the story is narrowed down , it actually is extremly simple, although girls aloud have gone all out, and performed everything better, with better lighting, props, make up and costume. Girls aloud were beginning to loose some publicity, but The Promise boosted there reputation back into the limelight, by sending the girls straight to the number one spot again. Girls aloud have created an eye catching front cover for there CD album cover. Even though there isnt much imagination to the photo, they all still look powerful and professional young women, who appear strong and confident. Each image is posed, yet in different angles and outfits. The outfits all stand out as brightly coloured body con dresses. This also shows off the girls figures and compliements them. It appears as though the girls are standing in a box, even tohugh the photo has only been edited to look this way. Even though the album reads ‘OUT OF CONTROL’ the girls appear calm and collected in the photo. The image creates an abstract feel to it, and the black bold large writing across the back still reads well and contrasts with the brighter colours. A bright pink colour is used for the title of the album, this relates to girls and females of a younger audience. The DVD cover for Girls Aloud out of control tour DVD is completly different in contrast to the CD album cover. The girls are all dressed in black, and appear to be in almost burlesque like outfits. Each girl is still heavily made up, and even more posed than the CD album cover. The background in this photo relates to ‘The Promise’ video, when you look at it, it relates to a sixties style performance. The gold contrasts with the black and makes the girls stand out from the background. The text is simple yet bold which establishes the artist and the DVD title. Since the DVD mainly focuses on girls aloud performing on tour , the image appears more performance based than studio based. The image creates impact on the page, which could mean that girls aloud create impact when they perform there hits on stage.
