1. Transporter 2 is a 2005 French action film directed by Louis Leterrier and produced by Luc Besson. It is the sequel to The
Transporter (2002). It is followed by Transporter 3 (2008).
Jason Statham returns as Frank Martin, a professional "transporter" who delivers packages without questions. Set
in Miami, Florida, he chauffeurs a young boy who is soon kidnapped. Frank tries to save the boy.
Frank Martin (Jason Statham) has relocated from southern France to Miami, Florida. As a favor, he becomes a temporary
chauffeur for the wealthy Billings family. The marriage of Jefferson (Matthew Modine) and Audrey Billings (Amber
Valletta) is under great strain due to the demands of his high profile government job. Frank bonds with their son, Jack
(Hunter Clary), whom he drives to and from elementary school in his new Audi A8 W12. Frank Martin is no ordinary
transporter because he was in the army so he has a special skill set to make sure he gets the job done and get it done
right.
The following slideshow will be an analysis of the film opening and also linking to the cinematography. Mise En Scene,
Editing, Exposition of Characters, Setting and Narrative and the themes shown throughout the film opening.
2. Cinematography:
At the beginning of the film, it shows a man alone in a car so this tells the audience that he prefers to be alone then
with other people, when the camera cuts to him inside the car the camera shows the man getting ready to do
something important because he is getting ready for it. The man in the car gives the audience a sense of danger
because he has quite a serious face and because he is looking at the camera at the start of the scene and that gives
off a sense of danger because people know something bad is about to happen to him. The actor in this film is well
known for doing action films so people know straight away that this film is going to be an action film.
Mise En Scene:
The Mise En Scene in the opening of this film is the car park and also the car that the protagonist is in and the other
cars in the car park and also it is the lack of props in this scene which tells the audience that this man doesn’t need
anything except the basic essentials that a man needs e.g. His car and his clothes is all he needs to get on with his
work.
Editing:
The music in this opening scene is orchestral and it makes the opening scene ominous because the man looks at the
camera and the music goes with the scene making it suspenseful and also when the camera cuts to the shot of his
watch that tells the audience that he doesn’t like to be late and always wants to be on time.
3. Setting:
The first time we know where this opening is set is by
the car park in the opening scene so this connotes to the
audience that this film is set in an urban area because
other areas don’t have a multi-story car park, only
heavily populated areas have these.
The second shot which tells us where this film is
set is the car the protagonist uses in the opening
scene of this film, this connotes that this is an
urban area because only people in a heavily
populated area have cars like this.
When the protagonist gets out the car and the
thieves take it, this shows its set in an urban area
because of how they are dressed in this opening
scene which connotes to the year of the movie
which is 2005
4. Exposition of Characters:
Clean shaven and wearing a suit:
This signifies to the audience that he dresses to
impress and he cares what people think of him
because he always wears a suit while he is working
and he always wants to look his best when people
can see him.
The Watch:
When we see the protagonist look at his watch this then
signifies that he doesn’t like to be late and he is always
on time and the fact that it was a close up of his watch
connotes to the audience that time is very important to
him.
Martial Arts:
The fighting in the opening scene signifies to the
audience that he is not a man to be messed
with because he’s got a few moves and he’s not
afraid to use them on people who are a
problem
5. Narrative techniques
The narrative techniques used in this film opening are Binary Oppositions and Enigma Codes. The
Binary Oppositions in this opening are:
i. Old Vs. Young
ii. Experienced Vs. Inexperienced
iii. Good Vs. Bad
I have seen these Binary Oppositions in this opening and where they appear in the film opening are
the Old V.s Young is shown when the protagonist is fighting the thieves because the main character is
slightly older then the thieves and the next is the Experienced V.s Inexperienced and this is shown
when they are fighting each other and the protagonist can take them all out with one move shows
he’s got more experience then the other characters in the scene. The third Binary Opposition is the
Good V.s. Bad which signifies that the main character is a good person in this film and everyone who
goes against him is a bad person.
The Enigma codes in this film are maybe obvious to some of the audience but maybe not to others but
these codes have been put here to make the audience think about what’s going to happen next and
the Enigma codes are:
i. Why is he looking at his watch?
ii. How does he know how to fight like that?
iii. Why is his car coded?
iv. Why is the only one who can start it?
