This document discusses how the author's media product of a magazine, billboard, and radio ad uses and develops conventions of real media while also challenging some conventions.
The magazine cover, layout, and elements like the masthead, selling line, barcode, and cover lines follow conventions of real magazines. However, some elements are developed differently, like changing fonts and layouts.
Individual pages also use conventions from example magazines but make some challenges, like including fewer articles on the contents page. Advertisements and interviews are similarly modeled after real media examples but with some unique elements.
The billboard keeps information minimal as is conventional but links to social media, developing the convention. Overall, the author strives to

Question 1 in what ways does your media
1. QUESTION 1- IN WHAT
WAYS DOES YOUR MEDIA
PRODUCT USE DOES,
DEVELOP OR CHALLENGE
FORMS AND CONVENTIONS
OF REAL MEDIA
PRODUCTS?
HARRY WREN
2. INTRODUCTION
The media product that I have
created consists of a magazine
cover, the first 4 pages of the
magazine, billboard and a radio
ad. The magazine and billboard
had to link together so that the
audience could easily relate
the two together. To do this I
had to look at other examples
of my product so that it would
look as professional as
possible.
3. COVER PAGE- MASTHEAD
My magazine had, developed and challenged the traditional
conventions within industry which are used. For example the
different fonts that I used throughout my project would be
conventions of magazines. The masthead on my cover photo is
larger than any other font used, this is the same on the majority of
magazines. This is so it can stand out from other magazines and you
can easily identify the magazine by the font and colour used for the
masthead. You can see by the example from the cricketer below, that
the mast head stands out and is clearly recognisable.
4. COVER PAGE- SELLING LINE
The selling line for my magazine was ‘’ the number one local
sports magazine’’ I got this idea from numerous sports
magazines to help with selling the magazine. You can see an
example of this in the cricketer, ‘the world’s number one
cricket magazine’. This is so it grabs the audiences eye by
showing that it is the best magazine around of that specific
genre.
5. COVER PAGE-DATELINE/ BARCODE
The date line on my magazine
was October 2016, the number
issue also featured on this area
as well. Some magazines include
the price in the dateline, however
I decided to include mine below
the barcode. You can see in the
copy of Four Four Two that the
dateline is above the masthead
compared to my magazine copy
where the dateline is at the top
left of the magazine.
The barcode on my
magazine features bottom
right, on most real media
magazines the barcode
doesn’t have a specific
place. The majority of the
time is on the back of the
magazine but sometimes
features on the front.
6. COVER PAGE- IMAGES
For my cover page, I decided to use one
big image for my main image. The image
covered up all the magazine cover page so
that the masthead, barcode, dateline,
cover lines, etc., where all above the
image in different colour fonts so that it
would stand out more. It also included a
image of the 20 page pull-out lords
special, I included this so that the readers
had some idea of the special but didn’t
give too much away so that they would
buy a copy of the magazine. When looking
at other media products I realised that
most if not all magazine use one big main
image for the background. I used the
conventions of magazines for an idea of
what I wanted the cover page to look like, I
then developed them so they would be
original, for example by changing the
layout and fonts.
7. COVER PAGE- COVER LINES
The cover featured 4 cover lines this is so that it helps sell the magazine. The main
cover line is ‘Lords special’ in the final piece this cover line should be bigger so
that the reader knows what the main focus of the magazine is. There is also a
competition shown on the front page, this will get the audience intrigued to see
what they could win. The ‘WIN’ is in bold pink so that it stands out and can catch
the eye of someone walking past. You can see in this copy of RUGBY WORLD that
there is a cover line that informs you that there is a free calendar inside. I used this
on my magazine as well but changed it to a competition, I decided not to say what
you could win I simply put ‘ head to page 62 to find out’ this is so it will make you
buy the magazine to try and win the competition.
The two magazines to the
right both have a few cover
lines to show what is
included in the magazine.
RUGBY WORLD have used
all the same colours and
fonts however I changed
that up and used different
fonts and colours so that it
would stand out more on
the magazine rack in the
shops.
8. PAGE 1- CONTENTS PAGE
The first page of my magazine was the
contents page, however I called it the ‘ THE
LINE UP FOR SEPTEMBER’, this was
because it links in with the genre sport. I
got this idea from the magazine ‘Rugby
World’. Another idea I got from ‘Rugby
World’ was to include photos that link with
what is in the magazine.
Unlike the majority of content
pages, mine doesn’t include that
much information on, it only
includes 5 key articles compared
to the one in the other image
below which includes 20 plus. I
done this so it makes the reader
go through the whole magazine
and read all the articles instead of
picking specific articles to read.
9. PAGE 2
Page 2 of my magazine was a ‘shot of the month’
unlike the two examples of the photo on a double
page spread, I decided to keep it to one page. All
the magazines that included a shot of the month
section had a short description of the photo and
how to apply for the competition. The bottom right
image included one small text box, this was the
same with most of the magazines. I decided to
change it up little bit and make three different boxes
with all different titles with short and simple
information in each one so that it was more,,,,,,
10. PAGE 3
For Page three of my magazine I designed an ad. Most magazines include an
add in the first few pages‘. As my magazine was a sport magazine it would make
sense to do the ad on an aspect of sport.
From looking at the two images you can see a few similarities, for
example the they both provide as little information as possible this
is so you look at the product more. The pricing is presented in the
same way, with the product name in small font with the price of the
products next to it. The logo of the company is also presented very
similar due to the fact that it stands out on the page. Finally the
website address is below the company logo, this is so you can go
online and search these products to buy them.
11. PAGE 4
For page 4 of my magazine I
done a interview with myself for
when I played at Lords. I got the
layout from the cricketer again.
At the top of the article I
have a large image of me
getting bowled at Lords, I
then linked the image with
the question: Lords day
ends in disaster, what did
Harry Wren think? Below
the image there is a
caption of the photo, in the
cricketer magazine under
every photo there is a
caption so I decided it
would be a good idea to
include this.
Another aspect I used from the cricketer was
the significant quotes being highlighted and
written in larger font. I thought that this was
effective as they stood out and made it look
more like a real media product. The layout of
the article was similar as it was laid out in
columns so that it would be easier to read.
One thing that I had
done differently was
that I had the
different questions
compared to many
other magazine
interviews where it all
flows of one question
and is mainly a
conversation. I
changed that up as I
believed it would be
better and more
effective to ask
different questions.
12. BILLBOARD
Most billboards don’t include that much information on them
as you would normally be driving past them so you wouldn’t
have that much time to read them. I took this into account
when creating my billboard and looked into professional
billboards so that I could use the conventions of them and
interpret them into my own billboard. The main one I used for
a template was the McDonalds one advertising the McRib.
The billboard I created was stereotypical and used all the
conventions of a billboard for example didn't include too
much information. It simply included the title of the magazine
in bold in the middle of the billboard, and the links to the
social media sites twitter, Facebook and the website.
