For the front cover, the student mostly followed conventions of real-life magazines by including the title across the top, issue details, and promotional text. However, they made the promotional text larger to make it more eye-catching.
For the contents page, the student followed column layout conventions but presented it simply without bright colors unlike real magazines.
For the double-page spread, the student fully followed conventions by including a large picture, interview text in columns, drop caps, prominent text, and a web address - developing conventions further with added quotes to draw readers in.
2. How I followed, developed and Challenged the forms and
conventions of real life media products
For my front cover of the magazine, I mostly followed
the conventions of how a magazine looked. I used the
same things on my magazine as how it should be. For
a start the title ‘Beat on Beat’ is positioned across the
whole page, the unique banner ‘The #1 Indie UK
Magazine’ which draws the readers attention like
other magazine. The issue number, date and price tag.
I followed how a real life product is with the
competition we offer I have the ‘WIN FREE’ in writing
bigger to the actual thing we are offering because it
makes it stand out to the audience and if they see the
WIN FREE it is an incentive to buy the magazine. The
eye catching sub stories included in the magazine
makes the audience want to read about their
favourite star and what they have been up to.
I have challenged the conventions of real life media
products by not making the colours of the magazine
stand out and make the cover too bright for the
audience etc.
3. Contents Page
For the contents page, I hardly followed the forms
and conventions of how a real life media product
should be, I followed the way it should go by having
the columns the same areas of how they are on real
life products, I have the same type of magazine
articles that would be included in music magazines
and just in general. However I went against the
codes and conventions of how it should look by the
presentation of the page, usually contents pages for
magazines are like the front cover, but for mine it is
a basic simple layout which gets the point across of
the magazine without standing out too much. With
the way the page is layout I think I could have
followed more of the codes and conventions of a
real life magazine because in reality mine doesn’t
look like one.
4. Double page Spread
This is my double page spread, for this part of production work I went with all the codes
and conventions to how a real life product would look, across the double page I have put
a large picture one side and the interview on the other half which follows what one looks
like, the snippets of quotes across the page to draw the readers attention of what Is said
in the interview like ‘it became obvious I wanted to become a DJ’. The alignment of
paragraphs are what you would see on real life products with the columns lined up the
same. Start of the interview there is a drop cap which follows the conventions. I have
made the ‘World Exclusive’ title bigger than the rest to make it eye catching to the
audience so they want to read the ‘massive news’. The web address at the bottom right
of the page is there so that it can attract readers to use the magazine website likened on
real life products. I developed the codes and conventions with the quotes across the page
usually on a real life product you would not have many I have but to go against it and
develop onto it that’s what I have done.
