3. How to identify a Regional Magazine
(Brief Codes and Conventions)
It is possible to identify a regional magazine, through
the front cover. The front cover would generally
include information which points the readers mind to
the topic, in this case the region it centres around. Key
codes and conventions can indicate to us whether a
magazine is regional or not.
• The title is related to the region, for example – Cumbria Life we
know is about Cumbria as the title has the name in it
• The image is generally a recognisable location from the area, or
something creating a hermeneutic code related to the region,
including symbolism
• The straplines are related to happenings within the region
• The topics covered are local knowledge
