Mr. Johnson was found murdered; after much investigation, detective Findall is discussing the case with his
colleague Haventaclue.

H. Well who do you think was the person who killed Mr. Johnson?
F. Can’t you work it out?
H. Well, I think it was probably the woman who lived in the house next door.
F. No, Haventaclue, of course it wasn’t! She only wanted the money he owed her. She won’t get that now
that he’s dead.
H. Oh yes, I hadn’t thought about that. So was it Mr. Brown, the man who always did the gardening for
them?
F No, Haventaclue. It’s true that he loved Mrs. Johnson, but he knew that she didn’t love him. And he
probably believed that she would never love a man who had murdered her husband.
H. I suppose that’s true. So who was it then? The daughter? Do you think she wanted to have the money
that would be due to her from her father’s will.
F. No, she is too clever for that. She knew that she wouldn’t get money if her father died suspiciously.
Apart from that, I think that in a way she loved her father. The person she hates is Mr. Harrison, the
man her mother is in love with.
H. So who did kill Mr. Johnson?
F. Well I feel quite sure now that it was Mrs. Johnson
H. Mrs. Johnson!
F. Yes. She had never loved the man she had married. What she loved was all the money he had. Then Mr.
Harrison came along. He had money too and she loved him, but she had to get Mr. Johnson out of the
way.
