The
telecommunication
industry
wants
TRAI
to
revise
mergers

acquisitions
(M&A)
policy
to
facilitate
consolidation,
improve
services

reduce
debt.
The
industry
strongly
feels
that
TRAI
should
initiate
a
suo
motu
consultation
on
M&A
policy
with
all
stakeholders.
❑ Telephone
connections
in
India
cross
1
billion
mark
Ministry
of
Telecommunication
declared
that
telephone
connections
in
India
have
touched
the
1
billion
mark
with
mobile
phones
for
around
978
million.
The
ministry
is
targeting
500
million
connections
in
the
next
two
years.
Under
the
National
Telecom
Policy,
government
has
set
a
target
to
achieve
175
million
broadband
connections
by
the
year
2017
and
200
million
by
the
year
2020
at
2
Mbps
download
speed.
The
ministry
even
launched
long-­‐distance
Wi-­‐Fi
systems,
solar
powered
Wi-­‐Fi,
100
Gbps
optical
fibre
link
and

tariff
war
as
Reliance
Jio
prepares
for
launch
Telecom
companies

awaits
the
commercial
launch

4G
services

Reliance
Jio
Infocomm
with
panic,
worried
it
will
lead
to
a
voice
call
tariff
war
in
an
industry
already
gripped
in
rivalries.
Jio
is
likely
to
offer
data
and
voice
services
at
lowest
rates.
❑ Idea
Cellular
launches
new
customer
service
centre
Idea
Cellular,
India’s
largest
telecommunication
operator,
launched
a
new
customer
service
center
in
Padamugal,
Kochin
.
The
center
is
aimed
at
becoming
one-­‐stop
shop
for
all
mobile
service
related
requirements
by
providing
various
customer
friendly
attributes.

rolls
out
pre-­‐paid
card
linked
mobile
wallet
Bharat
Sanchar
Nigam
Limited
(BSNL)
launched
a
pre-­‐paid
card
linked
mobile
wallet
service
which
allows
customers
to
transfer
cash,
pay
for
services
and
withdraw
cash
of
up
to
INR
1
Lakh.
There
will
be
one
per
cent
charge
if
money
from
the
wallet
is
transferred
to
other
bank
accounts
or
there
is
a
cash
withdrawal.

Telecom
offers
free
mobile
data
to
non-­‐data
users
To
celebrate
Digital
India
week,
Videocon
Telecommunications
plans
to
offer
free
mobile
internet
usage
of
up
to
750
MB
valid
for
2
months
for
mobile
users
who
do
not
use
data
plans
currently.
To
avail
this
opportunity,
subscribers
need
to
give
a
missed
call
on
a
pre-­‐defined
number
and
on
the
basis
of
eligibility,
subscriber
will
be
extended
free
data
followed
by
a
call
from
the
digital
helpline.
Customers
may
upgrade
their
handset
to
data
enabled
handsets
with
the
initiative
and
also
set
up
a
free
helpline
and
develop
demonstration
stations
in
all
Videocon
connect
retail
to
educate
them
about
the
know
how
of
data
usage.

announced
price
cut
Xiaomi
India
plans
to
offer
either

price
cut
on
the
Redmi2
which
is

may

In

will

Vodafone
India
has
tinted
a
strategy
with
Walmart
India

would

support
union
government’s
Smart
City
initiative
Sistema
JSFC,
which
operates
under
MTS
in
India
is
planning
to
roll
out
a
pilot
project
for
the
union
government’s
INR
7,000
crore
Smart
City
initiative
and
as
part
of
Digital
India
Programme,
by
exploring
a
sustainable
business
model
for
monetization
of
Wi-­‐Fi
networks.
The
company
is
also
exploring
to
bring
about
new
services
avenues
such
as
platform
ticketing,
real
time
rail
information
and
has
submitted
its
proposal
to
the
government.

will

crore

Odisha
in
the
current
financial
year,
of
which
50
per
cent
will
be
spent

the
broadband

BSNL
Wi-­‐Fi
hotspot
zone,
with
optical
fiber
backbone
was
inaugurated
at

Temple,
Puri.
BSNL
will
provide
free
Wi-­‐Fi
for
30
minutes
per
24
hours,
limited
to
three
hours
in
a
month.
BSNL

mobile

and

the

Optical

project,
BSNL
