ACHIEVE THE IMPOSSIBLE WITH PLANNING AND PERSEVERANCE
1. ACHIEVE THE IMPOSSIBLE
PROF.GREG WHYTE
-Factors that limits human athletic performance:
The body (Physical self)
The mind (Psychological self)
The technical
The environment
-The better you get, the harder you have to work to improve.
-The most psychological limitations are belief, commitment and motivation
-Meticulous planning will reduce the number of potholes significantly and therefore reduces the limits
to success.
-Nothing great has ever been achieved from the sofa, you have to burn your bum
-Understanding the journey along your road to success begins with setting a challenge that passes the
three questions of destiny-importance, time and resources
-Set your goal using the SMART approach(S-specific, significant, M-measurable, meaningful,
motivational A-achievable, action orientated, R- realistic, rewarding, T-timely, trackable
-All too often our abilities are dictated by our own beliefs or the beliefs of those around us.
-Never be afraid to set an audacious goal. With meticulous planning, preparation and delievery,
anything is possible.
-The road of success is built on the foundations of hard work and intelligent working.
-Time waits for no man, you have to create time
-Shout from the roof tops. Advertising your challenge provides an opportunity to market your
challenge, garner support, enhance your self confidence and ultimately improve your performance.
-Avoid telling those who have a negative outlook on the life or would be happy to criticize you.
-In order to deliver success, your desire for success must outweigh your fear of failure.
-Dissect the challenge into a number of smaller steps
2. -Smell the roses. Make sure you celebrate reaching every short and medium term goal by rewarding
yourself, extrinsic or intrinsic. Intrinsic such as pride, a sense of personal competence, high self
esteem and your strong inner belief .Make sure extrinsic reward don’t affect your challenge
negatively.
-IF and THEN Plan can be helpful in dealing with potential risks. By putting risk and solutions side by
side, the process of implementing the solution can become automated. The IF and THEN plan
minimize the risk and also enhance your confidence you know you can deal with the risk.
-Developing the brain of success is not solely about nature, it is also about nurture.
-Fill your motivation tank as and when required, before red zone
-Words are cheap and commitment is worthless unless you have a clear understanding of the
challenge, the limits to achieving success and the determinants of success.
-In order to ensure the team token strategy enhances motivation you should follow the SCORE
approach: simplicity, consistency, observation, reward, explanation
-While belief grows throughout the preparation process, commitment is absolutely fundamental from
the very beginning.
-Your plan should be constructed using macro-, meso- and micro cycle.
-Failing to plan is planning to fail. It should be detailed map of what, why, when and how you are
going to deliver your short -, medium-, and long term goals.
-Flexibility is the key to good planning.
-It is only a failure if you fail to learn from your experience.
-Progressive overload can be achieved by increasing the volume of work in three ways-intensity,
frequency and duration.
-Do the things you hate well.
- Maintain your strength and optimize your weaknesses.
-Never assume. Confidence is an important part of successful performance. In contrast, arrogance,
leading to a belief that a challenge is easy or that you deserve success, is rarely a positive trait. It
worth remembering that if it was easy, everyone would do it!
-Rather than taking time off and losing valuable preparation time, simply change your programme to
focus on a different determinant of success. This is easily done by adjusting your micro-cycle
programme.A common mistake is to beat yourself up by continuining a task with excessive fatigue,
the result of which is poor-quality work and negative emotions.
3. -Communication is not only verbal (i.e. what we say and how we say it), it is also non-verbal (i.e. how
we act)
-There’s is no ‘I’ in team but there is a ‘ME’
-Nothing worse than a team member who talks non-stop, never listening to the input of others.
-Criticism can be a valuable tool in enhancing performance if it is done in a constructive manner.
-Your vision statement should be clear, concise and inspiring.
-You are what you do, not just what you did!
-Prepare for the worst and hope for the best.
-There is no time like the present.
-Overcome your fear and tackle your anxiety. Close your eyes and talk to yourself for few mins every
day
-Squeeze it out. Imagine your personal resources (your energy, belief, commitment, motivation etc)
are stored in a tube of toothpaste. When you start a challenge you can press anywhere on the tube
with little effort to extract as much of your various resources as you require.
