2. Sponsor request
Because Meatu is close to my heart (personal
project Heart for Kids 2007) and circumstances
in Meatu Tanzania are not going to change for
the better overnight:
* support for water tanks
* training of a.o. water committees
Because ICS is a professional and competent
organisation, given the fact, for example, that
they have been selected for being subsidised by
the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFS 2).
Because of your support of me running the
marathon, I could convert some of my cold
sweat into drinking water for the Kids in Meatu
Tanzania.
(I don’t think I will look as happy as at the picture on the right after
running 42.195 km .. )
3. Sponsoring
1. What?
Sponsor for an amount per kilometre:
e.g. € 1,- per kilometre = € 42 euro
More or less will be equally appreciated!

6. What struck me in 2007
Meatu Tanzania is a very desolate area
* From Meatu to the nearest big city is an eight hours’
journey, which can only be covered by jeep via a bumpy
and uneven track
* During the rainy season Meatu cannot be reached by road
at all
Meatu is an extremely poor area
* Daily necessities, such as water and (varied) food are a
big problem due to the arid climate and the lack of
infrastructure
* Potential young locals migrate to the cities
* Difficult to get and keep local staff (ICS is the only NGO
present all the time)
Foreign aid work requires go-getters!
* Culture and mentality do not change overnight…
* Cross-cultural differences in local cultures amongst each
other as well as with Westerners
* Educate locals to independence and self-reliance
7. Update: Situation at this moment
Please skip this page and the next one should you have read enough by
now and do proceed to slide 9
Being such a poor area, Meatu can be improved immensely, but at the
same time, finding and keeping trained staff is a problem for ICS.
Quantification is not only material progress. In Meatu, ICS balances
instruction and progress carefully against its own taken efforts. The
issue is to encourage the community and the local authorities to act for
and by themselves. Only then, it will be possible to keep the local
knowledge in Meatu and thus bring about a sustainable change.
8. Update: Current situation
Projects Meatu Tanzania 2009:
Rain water harvesting tanks: All water tanks supported by Heart for Kids 07 are still in operation. ICS has
plans to build new tanks in 2010/11. Training the water committees remains of great importance. They
play the key part in the process from rain water to drinking water in the tank. For example, they keep the
gutters clear, prevent rusty water in the tanks and monitor quality of the water. Furthermore, even one
school is selling water right now to the benefit of the school.
Drinking water is and remains issue nr 1 in Meatu Tanzania.
Grain storage project (progress as when we were there)
Solar panel project: Local women have been to India for this project, to learn how it is set up there and to
implement that into villages in Meatu. Women from the smallest (poorest) villages have been selected
and are working on this project. The biggest improvement is that there now is light in those villages after
dusk. This project is being monitored by the neighbouring villages. Moreover, what is special indeed, is
that the project is run by women who will continue to do so during 2010. More can be read about solar
panels in Africa on the ICS web-site: http://www.ics.nl/index.php?id=247
9. Summary
Water remains the daily necessity
* Support € needed for water tanks at more
schools
Doing it oneself
Ownership by community and local authorities
* Support € needed for training of a.o. water
committees
Much improvement potential for Meatu,
at the same time profound and searching in-
depth, a learning path of trial and error
More can be read about Tanzania and the water
tanks on the ICS website:

13. Ready, steady, 1 week to GO!
I am training since the beginning of January. Slowly building up to
training 5x per week, one of which is a long run.
Like 2 weeks ago 26 km (left) and last week 30 km (right). The
landscape is so beautiful in Wicklow, that helps. (because running for
such a long time may also get a bit boring .. ;-)
14. Ready, steady, 1 week to GO!
Last Sunday (April 18) I have been running 10 km in the Great Ireland Run,
Dublin Phoenix park in 55:47, it was great to experience the “event spirit”!

With over 60hrs / 500km of training, the event-spirit ànd the charity cause “converting sweat
into drinking water for the Kids in Meatu Tanzania” I am determined to cross the finish line!
